  • Maybe something like this, except with the ABCD letters rotated vertically?

Not bad actually. LOL at pan. Actually, reminds me @elf_audio check out layout of new EG Pulse drum app for 4x4 large pads and controls on top and left side.

    @wim @elf_audio yes to this

@elf_audio if can keep ABCD at the bottom then parameter dials on the sides (Left & Right of screen or on the Right) and Edit button on Left & Delete button on right the Trash bin either side.Or keep trash bin as a pop up in Center Top

Actually, I never considered the positioning of the edit box, etc.
Might not be practical. It was just a quick thought.

at all cost if possible please keep it's sp-ish vibe

@elf_audio @kobamoto i agree 100%. Saying that though if it’s an option in settings then I guess its a compromise. Please leave the 4banks..keeps it simple.Too many pads spoil the look Can live with 16x2 as an option but the vibe of Koala will feel different with 64 pads/1bank

oh if Elf_audio is gonna make it an option then Imo whatever is cool, I love it when devs give us the option to choose.

  • @elf_audio said:
@stormbeats I did a mock-up of the 32 x 2 banks it’s pretty overwhelming, so will stick to 16 per bank. Would be good to keep it simple, thanks for your input!

@kobamoto will def try! My main goal is to keep things simple. Sp-404s are already in portrait mode in real life, so I would rather keep everything portrait, but everyone wants landscape

I hear ya, it'll work out. IF it's gonna be an option then I just want to say thanks for that right now :)

Just did a rough sketch of an idea, would love to get your feedback on it

Please note that I want to keep the portrait/iphone version features identical to the landscape mode.

I like it, it matches the arturia beatstep perfectly.

    What about this one?
We shouldn't forget all the other functions and the fact that different layouts of the same group of controls between iPhone, iPad, portrait and landscape might become irritating.

Edit: The second page should read "SEQUENCE" and A/C/D/C could use a stir :D

  • @rs2000 Thanks for those mockups! It highlights the problem with trying to put too much on the screen and mixing up the pages - for instance, you have this situation where there's a play + record button on the sample page, which would be a problem because people would think what does that record? A sample or a sequence? It's really clear when it's only on the sequence page.

I'm going to enable the record button on the perform page at some point, to make it possible to record automation. Still a little way off but in the pipeline.

Actually thanks everyone! Been a great design exercise!

@elf_audio @rs2000 this is brilliant. I hear what you are saying Elf but it would be like bm3 for instance The play / record are on most of bm3 screens which actually is good for workflow, If anyone gets confused as to what these play/record icons are then well ....they can only learn :) really see if this can work if possible. Also it’s more a design layout for ipad as opposed to iphone so you really don’t need to stress to much there. :) Sample & Sequence on one screen looks good

I know, UI design is easy until you're actually using it 😅

BTW, one thing that is much more relevant to me (and sorry if I have missed something): Are you planning to make the sequences editable?
Nothing fancy, just to be able to freely move notes, do timing and length corrections and shift notes' pitch. Being rather unsuccessful with quantised recording, and using samples with soft attacks that sometimes need some timing advance, this would seem very useful, also for exporting audio loops when it's hard to do such changes afterwards.
    What do you think?

  • @elf_audio aside from landscape design layout have you thought about adding an “auto jump to next sequence or chain sequences?

    Ah, probably not for now.

Not sure with this one, it's really against the whole principle of Koala, but android has such terrible latency (something like 70ms on a samsung s10) that I'm considering it as an alternative input method.

I’m having problems exporting loops - anything a bit long gets glitches and dropouts in the exported wav. Is this a known issue, and are there workarounds?

Recording a performance works no problem.

I’m actually trying to exports stems using this (saving the song, making one long loop of it, copying the loop once for each stem, using «clear pad» to solo each stem, and viola. Except for the glitches.)

This was for an older iPad Pro by the way - I just tested this same thing with an iPhone 7 (because on a plane), and it worked perfectly there, no glitches at all, for a much longer loop.

So depending on the iOS model, this works as a nice workaround to export stems separately so as to work with them in a DAW.

Well, at least it wouldn't break the immediacy of entering notes in real-time 😇

  • @elf_audio any plans on multi stem export. That would be cool

  • Is this AUv3?

Not AUv3. You can sample from apps via Audiobus (or via Audioshare).

On a phone, it's very good as a standalone app though so I haven't missed AUv3 for it.

It would be cool. If you don't mind a slightly tedious workaround, I do it like so:

    1) save project
    2) save copy of project
    3) concatenate all loops into the finished song (either one long sequence or several)
    4) delete all other loops
    5) copy the loop to export so there is one loop per part you want to export
    6) edit each of these, and do 'clear pad' for all the sounds that don't belong in each part respectively
    7) do "export" and "export all loops".

The result will be a zip file with your stems.

You can't do it with 'record song' and it isn't super-quick but it's still less work than doing this on a PO33.

    YES!!! Thank you @elf_audio !

  • @elf_audio : loving the new landscape format :) Koala is now my new favourite iPad app.

  • Landscape mode just made my day this along with EG Pulse killer combo
