  • Let’s talk about recording perfect loops with the note repeat and going back and forth between say 8th notes to 16th notes..........

It’s Audiokit all over again. For the sake of balance, I’ll give my feedback. I think it’s super cool when devs do fun things like this with their apps.

  • 20 seconds max for the "enhancement"

  • I don’t mind a simple easter egg like this one. But I buy music apps to make music which is enough of a puzzle to solve. The Korg one was just silly and pointless. If I want to play games I’ll buy a game.

Huh? Thought it was 10. You saying there’s more?

  • 🤦🏾‍♂️ Come on guys it’s not that serious. Some people like puzzles and some don’t. Some would prefer to pay and some would prefer free. Who cares, it7all to make music at the end. We shouldn’t be going back and forth over someone’s opinion. Maybe the developer might think hey, I can make a hard puzzle for those that like to solve it and IAP for those who don’t. Boom both sides win!!

    My thoughts exactly!
I enjoy puzzles instead of resorting to 'Pay to Assist/Solve/Finish' IAPs :sunglasses:

Hard puzzles don’t pay the rent. Dev loses in that case.

  • I'm a bit puzzled at the "I don't have time for puzzles" line of thinking. If one doesn't have time for puzzles, why would one spend time with experimental features not ready for prime time? Why not just wait until when/if they make it into the main product?

    FOMO I guess?

Man, yeah I’m with you guys. It was such a hard puzzle. Saw the Koala thread was blowing up, scrolled for 30 seconds til someone said to go to Settings and hold down “OK” for 10 seconds. I did then it told me to go to Tools. And I even had to look through the list to see what was new. Absurd.

And the very apparent, explicit implication that this is how every single new feature will be introduced is infuriating.

    [Insert Shoresy quote]

I did not see any such implication.

Well, some of them puzzles have ads that help to feed the developer…

But imagine the nightmare of having to watch unison.audio ads every 10 minutes when using a music app…

    I think it was sarcastic

  • Yeah this sort of backfired - I didn’t foresee people getting upset about it.

The feature is super beta. I tested it but idk how it would work in the wild, how people will take the fact that you have to download 158MB to use it. Also if you have an old phone or an andr*id phone it can run very slowly.

I don’t feel morally ok charging extra for it because it was made by someone else and is totally open source and I sort of wince when I see others (eg algoriddim) using the exact same algorithm and massively profiting from it.

Also, the feature isn’t finished, I intend to put a UI on it to make the workflow a bit nicer. Once that’s done I won’t be hiding it behind an Easter egg, it will be a mainline feature. I just wanted to get it out there to see what people thought of it before sinking more time into it.

Also, the quality isn’t great (it doesn’t always extract that great and must downsample to 32khz), so I kind of wanted to test the water with a few people. And it was Easter and I love Easter egg hunts.

I didn’t realise it would irritate so many people, probably wouldn’t do it again, but then I get flak from users all day about this or that bug, or not adding a feature that they want etc etc, so I’ve got very used to apologising haha. it’s been a learning experience! Apologies to anyone who got wound up about it.

Funnily enough there was another unpublicised Easter egg in the previous version that a few people found which I have since removed and got

  • Wait so is the strum option out until it’s updated again?

  • Strum is disabled for now, it’s much less ready than the stem extractor. I have about half the design in my head but still some unresolved issues

  • Don’t worry @elf_audio You've done an awesome job with Koala. It’s worth the purchase of an iPad just to run your app. I think users can put up with some occasional nonsense to keep them on their toes. 😆👍🏼

Thanks, I love forward to seeing it in all its glory soon! Koala is one of the best things to happen to the App Store, imo. Thanks for all you do 🙏

    My whole post was sarcasm.

  • Maybe below is what FriedTapeworm meant a short while ago in this thread.

  • @elf_audio I am in awe of what you have created. Not just the app but also the community and the energy. Truly a vibe! Be proud and keep innovating 👊👍😎🤙🔊

I was actually referring to the limited edition apps that they started doing, which they meant to be fun, and so many people just got angry about it and a few said they would never buy Audiokit apps again. Even after the dev offered it for free for people who didn’t have the funds at the time, people were still upset.

  • Koala is one of the top ios apps ever, just a crazy hybrid of productive and fun. I see that spirit of fun with the Easter egg and mostly no problem cause many would solve it quickly for everyone. Only thing is, some people don't read release notes or go to forums and it would be a shame to miss you dropping goodies like this. Thankful it exists and that you're continually pushing out dope suprises 👌

  • @Model10000 tbf if people don’t hear about it, they’re not missing out, it is coming as an official feature, this is just a way for me to publicly beta test

  • I love Koala and Elf Audio is a mega developer but... the Easter egg thing drove me nuts. Not a happy time trying to work it out. Really hated it to be honest. Irritated and annoyed. <---- honest grumpy old man feedback

Over-reaction? Maybe. But that's what happened with me.

It was only the AudioBus Forum guys that allowed me to solve it (I would hate to be a Koala user that didn't know about the AudioBus Forum trying to solve it on my own).

I think if it was some secod rate app I wouldn't care about a hidden new feature but, hey, this is Koala Sampler...one of my all time fav iOS apps.

  • Just red 300 comments on this app
Perhaps I should of jumped on the app from the beginning
Looks good, and certainly has a following
Using loopy pro all the time now
Can anyone explain or talk me into buying this app, what do I gain using this and loopy, what reasons or user case would explain that I need both ?
Trust me, my finger is close to the buy button, the Easter egg seems super cool
Just a few user case reasons if you have the time
    Many thanks

Loopy Pro is a live looper with DAW features, whereas Koala is designed to emulate a hardware sampler. When it first came out it was heavily based on the SP404 workflow but it’s expanded steadily ever since.

Koala is unique because it has a TON of deep functionality, but it’s still the quickest way to get started making music (IMO). There’s no barrier — just open the app, record or load samples, and get moving. You can combine or stack samples with a simple drag and drop, you can re-sample to capture sections of a performance, and you can absolutely mangle audio however you want.

As far as overlap, Koala DOES let you loop and Loopy DOES let you record one-shots, but Koala is way better with one-shots and Loopy is way better with loops. Koala also has a very accessible real-time performance effects section and one of the best sequencer piano rolls on iOS (IMO). The Loopy Pro timeline is useful but it’s pretty rudimentary; Koala’s is based on patterns rather than a linear timeline so it feels closer to a groovebox than a DAW.

The other thing is that you can use it as a plugin within Loopy Pro to get the best of both worlds (although you’ll have to buy a small IAP within Koala).

I’m a bit of a Koala fanboy so I’ll try to slow down. If you’re patient, there’s very little Koala does that you couldn’t build in Loopy Pro. Koala also has pretty rudimentary MIDI support, which makes it less fun to use with certain controllers. But if you’re interested in HOW something works as well as what it does, Koala is a very valuable companion for, and alternative to, Loopy Pro. I regularly use both apps separately and together.
