  • @yowza Okay great!
@[Deleted User] The separate voicing editor page will be kept, there just won't be two pages to go through when making a entirely custom voicing.

@horsetrainer I see what you mean. I was asking about editing the voicing of a preset chord, but those issues apply there too. I’m definitely working on making a more convenient editing process (I’ve already moved all of the custom editing to one page, with an optional label). Thanks again for the detailed answer.

Wanted to let you know I'm having an absolute blast with with your App in AUM using the "AUM keyboard +hold" method to rapidly enter chord progressions into pads.

The midi learn mode in Tonality works great for assigning chords to be played using AUM's keyboard keys.

I then use my bluetooth midi keyboard controller to play a lead, while triggering chords or arpeggiators with the AUM keyboard.

This is a great app for jamming. It's the only AUv3 chord player I know of, and it's filling a much needed niche.

Looking forward to seeing the new custom chord workflow in the next update!

  • Hey everyone, I’m currently looking for some more beta testers. Let me know if you’re interested!

  • The latest beta contains:

    • State saving
    • Alternate MIDI quick assign modes for various use cases
    • Monopad mode
    • Recolor tool
    • Live piano for viewing currently playing notes
    • New circle of fifths "focus" mode
    • Performance mode in the chord pads
    • Chord pad grid sizes up to 12x12
      and a few other things

    Still looking for testers!

@horsetrainer 👍 Thanks for the very useful AUM keyboard + hold tip and the midi learn tip as well. Now I’ll be using them all the time.. @TonalityApp thanks for this great app.. so many useful features..
Here’s horsetrainer’s detailed description for anyone else needing a similar setup.

The Chord Pad Update appeared in the Apple App Store this morning!

    It works great!
This update adds a very useful AUv3 composing tool to the Tonality App.

The way I'm using it at the moment...

I load a synth into AUM.
I load the Tonality Chord AU into a Midi slot.
I route the AUM "in-App keyboard" to send midi to both Tonality and the synth.
I also route Tonality to send midi to the synth.

I turn on the "Hold" function (the infinity symbol on the right side of the AUM in-App Keyboard).

I then hold down one empty chord pad in Tonality with one finger using one hand, and then with the other hand, I play notes on the AUM in-App Keyboard one note at a time. The "Hold function" prevents the chord from writing to the pad until finished.

Once done, I turn off the hold function, and the chord writes to the pad! :)

    Very cool.

Thank you for this awesome App!

  • @royor Glad you're enjoying it! I have an even better way of assigning notes to pads from the AUM keyboard (or a physical one) ready for the next update.

Glad to be of help. :)

Did you also notice... That when the AUM keyboard is also in "Scroll Mode", once a key is touched to hold, don't lift the finger yet, and use it to scroll the keyboard so you can select additional higher or lower notes to make very complex chords?

It's also a really fun App for sending chords to an Arpeggiator.

I'm looking forward to the new update as well.

  • @TonalityApp

    Thanks for latest update.

The Mono Pad + Latch combination works like a treat. Great for performance!
    State saving works well too.

For live performance, would be useful to have some quick way to switch all pads off. With Mono + Latch, and pads of different colours I’m not finding it easy to identify which pad is playing, and unless I’m missing something the only way to cancel the playing pad is to tap it again?

I’m not sure what “Performance Mode in the pads” feature is? Is that a feature I know by a different name?

  • @craftycurate Great! The performance mode is the lock icon in the top bar that prevents editing and hides empty pads. I’ll add an “all notes off” function to my list.

    @TonalityApp Testing 6.3.6 ... wow you’ve had a busy weekend.

In fact you’ve anticipated something I was going to request, which is that when a second pad (“Pad 2”) is pressed, only the new notes (those in Pad 2 which are not trigged by Pad 1) are triggered. Perfect for one particular ambient workflow I often use. So thanks for that :)

I have set up two pads, Pad 1 is a C Major with C4-E-G-C5 ... and Pad 2 with D4-F-A-C5 so they overlap in C5 only.

With Mono Pad ON, all notes from Pad 1 are cut off as expected, and with Mono Pad OFF, the two pads merge as expected, with Send New selected in Settings.

What would be perfect for me would be to have a Mono Pad mode “Takeover Mode” toggle where only those notes which are not shared between Pads 1 & 2 are cut off when triggering Pad 2. The others are simply left playing - in a sense they bare taken over and become Pad 2 notes i.e. when Pad 2 is unclicked, It would cancel the shared notes it took over from an earlier pad regardless of whether they were triggered by itself or an earlier Pad.

I see there is a setting right at the bottom of The Settings page which has this Note Off behaviour ... but it can’t be combined with Mono Pad which cuts everything off regardless. So some combination of Mono Pad and Note Off = Hold would be fantastic.

This would allow for really smooth ambient chord blends with the simplest possible workflow i.e. just tap the second pad ( Pad 2) and the non shared notes fade away from Pad 1 and fade in from Pad 2.

This can only currently be achieved in non-Mono Pad mode by tapping Pad 1, Pad 2, then tapping Pad 1 again to cancel all its notes.

Excellent work regardless. This is close to becoming an integral part of my live workflow.

  • @craftycurate Awesome, glad those features are getting some use. I knew I wanted them there but wasn't sure if anyone else needed quite that level of control.

Instead of a separate takeover mode, what if that behavior just happened when mono pad, send new, and hold are selected in settings? I feel that would make sense without cluttering the settings.

Agreed. Such a well-made app. I use it all the time now. Wouldn't be without it.

  • @TonalityApp loving the “inspiration” function under Presets right up my street. Many thanks for adding that. Would love to see more categories added like the desktop version of Plugin Boutique Scaler has ie Soul, Cinematic, Classical etc.

  • @audio_DT @Jumpercollins Thank you both! Your support means a lot.

@Jumpercollins Working on more! The two existing ones in the recent beta were more of a proof of concept.

Sounds great - I don't mind at all what combination of settings is required to enable the behaviour, if that behaviour can be produced.

    @craftycurate Okay, done!

@TonalityApp How do I key in a custom chord if it’s outside the range of the keys shown on the screen. Can I change the width of the lower built in keyboard to do this to show more keys higher and lower ?

Would be good to have something like a “number of octaves visible” setting, and +/- keys to jump up or down an octave in the visible view.

  • edited December 2019

@Jumpercollins @craftycurate Working on it. Right now you can enter the notes you want, then lower or raise any into whatever octave you like

Look forward to it! Didn’t want to appear to put pressure on you by mentioning it as I know we’ve discussed it before, but look forward to it when it appears.

    jeeezzz that sucks a bit

  • Yeah... ugh. I’ve noticed other apps using my app’s name as a keyword and for ads, but this is taking it a bit far. Maybe it’s unintentional?

  • Wow their new web address “tonaly.app” is remarkably similar to my “tonality-app” too

  • If the version dates in the App Store mean anything, the "Tonaly" App goes back to May 23, 2018

"Tonality" apparently goes back to September 6, 2019

I'm inclined to think the names are just a coincidence.

@TonalityApp , once you get the performance section of Tonality up and running with speedy, intuitive, custom chord pad assignment capabilities, including an easy full range access in-app keyboard for tapping in wide ranges of custom note chords. Tonality ought to become a "classic" forerunner app in the AUv3 chord pad niche.

I think that "performance buttons" concept could up the app to another level of coolness too. Lots of cool things those performance buttons could be assigned to do that would add a whole new dimension of improvisational creativity...IMHO...

  • @horsetrainer I also agree that it’s probably coincidence, but I fail to see how the dates are relevant since they only changed the name to Tonaly very recently.

Glad you see potential though, and thanks for the ideas!

  • Probably isn’t aware of yours... why didn’t just sent a mail to dev?
