  • Yes agreed very close if you search for App and confusing.

  • @TheDubbyLabby Yeah I might if it seems to be a big deal. I’m not too concerned at the moment I was just slightly put off

  • @TonalityApp I’d email. This is like Pepsi changing their name to Cokie-Cola

  • If someone were to bang out a new name for their product i bet your arse they would check if that name is being used and if there are similar names. Anyway its not a blame game, its just a shame because its confusing from a consumer perspective.

    🤣

  • @mjcouche
What would I even say though?

    “Hey, not cool”?

@TonalityApp can you add diatonic chord progressions to the inspiration options? Also some 2-5-1, I-VI-II-V-I, cadences would be awesome.

Maybe that you find it interesting that the dev just changed the app's name recently. You want to give the benefit of the doubt, but it is too close and could cause confusion between people who want to buy one vs. the other. For new customers, it could cause those customers to think there is ill will from your app or "Tonaly," and that one or the other is deliberately causing confusion. I don't know.

For the record, I bought "Ultimate Circle of Fifths" many months ago, and was just recently made aware of your app. Looks very promising. Best of luck to you. I don't truly believe that they directly compete, but I can see where people will make that leap.

I did find it weird that the app's name was changed to something with two letters less and at a quick glance looks similar to yours. I actually did a double take when updating this morning.

  • @mjcouche Thank you. That seems like a good take on all of this.

@[Deleted User] Adding that to my list. I may not make specific layouts for things like 2-5-1, since that can easily be seen from the diatonic/scale chords layout.

    Fair enough 🙂

  • @[Deleted User] Brainstorming though, I could have a list somewhere of common progressions within the current layout

Coolio, wack it in the beta if you find something that makes sense 👍

  • Hi Bryce,

thanks for reaching out to me!
There are a lot of similar app names in the store, so it is quite challenging to find and pick a completely new and unique one 😅
I chose more for a "name" than a "real word". The word tonaly and tonality may sound similar, but written like:

    TONALY vs. Tonality

I think it is quite easy to distinguish! I'm confident that they can co-exist without problems in the App Store, don't you think?

    Greetings from Germany,
    Chris

Here was the response. I’m inclined to believe him, but slightly weirded out by the fact that all of our account names are now very similar (Instagram, websites, etc)

I admit I'm a little dyslectic but the two names look the same.
    Weird eh, life is such.

  • @craftycurate @Jumpercollins The next beta is out with the takeover mode and sharing of presets between the standalone and AUv3 versions.

    Tonality is also on sale!

Excellent - will give it a spin (esp the Takeover mode). Thanks again!

@horsetrainer I also agree that it’s probably coincidence, but I fail to see how the dates are relevant since they only changed the name to Tonaly very recently.

Glad you see potential though, and thanks for the ideas!

I was curious who was using the "Tonal..." variant first.
Dates matter most if timely trademark protection is going to be sought. First use in commerce is a criteria.
But I sort of doubt many small iOS App Developers even bother with registration.
Out of curiosity, I did a few international searches for various iOS App names, and was only able to find Cubasis, GarageBand, and Syntronik with registered Marks.

I think having a very unique "made up" name is possibly a better strategy... Names that when even slightly altered, tend to yield easily distinguishable differences.

That's why many products and companies use completely made up names, or names that use one or more words that have no connection to the product.

Like naming a new iOS music App something like... "Ugly Zebra's Amazing Chord Making Extravaganza Audio Unit".

But yeah, I can see why you were "weirded out" by it.

Looking forward to your next update.

I guess I was just confused why you were asking seeing as the other app changed their name a few days ago and obviously didn’t have it first. Good point about the trademarks though... maybe I’ll steal that name from you if you haven’t trademarked it already :D

By “weirded out” I just meant it was slightly suspicious that the web address and other accounts are now very similar to mine. They also show up as an ad right above searches for Tonality, indicating they’ve probably set it as a keyword.

Thanks for your continued feedback and hope you’ll enjoy the future updates!

  • Also interesting that the Circle of Fifths app was recently discussed alongside Tonality in the Black Friday thread: https://forum.audiob.us/discussion/35788/black-friday-deals-2019-music-apps/p22

    Hmmm 🤔

    @TonalityApp

The new takeover mode works perfectly, exactly as hoped. Thanks so much for adding that in. That one change has made life a whole lot easier when creating improvised ambient music the way I often dog especially live.

Probably worth mentioning takeover mode in the manual, and how to enable it as it might not be easy to find since it’s a combination of 3 settings.

Here it is in action ... this sort of arrangement a seems to have a lot of promise ...

    +1 could be really interesting....

  • @gusgranite Yeah and I gave it a nice description too...
@craftycurate Awesome! It’s definitely going in the manual.

I was thinking of doing just that 😊 Idea was to demo one particular workflow for creating ambient soundscapes in case it's the kind of sound they make and could make use of this app... Maybe generate a few sales for one of our most customer focused devs!

Watch this space... Haven't done one of those before but hopefully will have something posted this weekend.

    @[Deleted User] @Sinthemau @TonalityApp

Here you go. Thought I’d take the opportunity to create an ambient improv rather than just a quick feature demo.

Keep an eye on the Chord Pad in the top right. The pads darken slightly in colour to indicate which one is active. You’ll hear how the pad sound is sustained across pad changes I.e. shared notes don’t retrigger. For the first 3pads only the bass note changes, with the same chord floating above.

This setup requires a few settings to be active:

    • Latch mode (see bottom of Tonality window)
    • In Settings: MonoPad mode, Sustain Mode = Latch, Overlap Mode: Note On = Send New and Note Off = Hold.

PS. Fourth pad should be labelled C9 or Csus2 in case that causes confusion when listening to the notes.

  • @craftycurate This is really great!
