@hellquist Hope you'll find something useful in it, and thanks for confirming.
Hi Bryce - this thread made me curious for your app - looks exciting. Just one question about the chord pads:
I understand that I can trigger them either directly or by an external keyboard via midi. But is it also possible (or is it planned) to let the chord pads get „played“ automatically - for example by the transport control in AUM - or is this only manually possible?
@Bon_Tempi It's only manually possible at the moment. It might be something I look into in the future, but this was intended more for live performance/recording/auditioning chord progressions than for sequencing. I'm actually not familiar with the transport control – what exactly does it do?
Sorry this is pretty off topic, but how do you use chords in ambient? One long extended chord, or do you build progressions of some kind. As someone who has a pretty good understanding of Jazz and classical music theory, I've always wondered how people think about harmony in ambient music.
Just checked and nothing showing up yet.
One approach I use is to hold an open chord in the right hand and shift the bass note to characterise the chord. So one example might be holding D4, A4, D5, E5, and then shift between D2, E2, F#2, G2, A2, B2. I will add and remove notes in the RH as well to vary the harmony and create tension & release etc.
Happy to discuss at more length but we can move it to another thread to keep this one for Tonality if needed.
@craftycurate Thanks. Hopefully it shows soon; it usually only takes around an hour or two after approval by the review team to actually show up in the store, but it was approved and "ready for sale" yesterday so I don't know what's happening. I guess we just have to wait.
@cian I second this question! I programmed this with mainly a jazz/classical perspective in mind.
Looking forward to extending my chord knowledge with these features!
I see - ok - and yes, I guess Tonality is great for this purpose - I just got curious when I read about the chord pads and AUV3 - cause I was looking for something like Navichord but as AUV3 - and NC has this ability to play/loop a selected/arranged chain of chords ...
But maybe I found a solution - I guess one could feed the midi out from the Tonality chord pads into Atom or Photon and record/play back/loop it in there ,,
„transport control“ is the play/pause-button in AUM which for example starts/stops any connected sequencer app inside of AUM
@Bon_Tempi I'll consider it. I've got a lot of other stuff I'm working on at the moment so it will probably be a while though. Let me know how the workaround works if you end up trying it.
Ok, cool, thanks ,,, and thanks for your responsiveness to our ideas - that’s great *
If the chord pads can be triggered by midi in then you should be able to have another AU plugin sequence these pads when using the AUM transport? I'm assuming the Tonality midi in is not restricted to a physical keyboard.
@bleep Ooh that's a really good idea! Hadn't thought about that.
Btw, does Tonality load as a midiFx AU or as an audio AU in something like BM3 (and, I presume, Cubasis)? I don't have it yet, but should perhaps pick it up:) Can't recall having seen whether it is a pure midi AU or not.
Bought because @TonalityApp is so engaged with users! Would love an explanation of how this works (the last bit).
@bleep It’s a pure midi effect/generator. Is this a problem in either of those hosts?
@lukesleepwalker The scale chords presets can be accessed by tapping the Presets... button, selecting “Scale chords”, and then selecting a key from the circle of fifths. This creates a layout with seven chords, one rooted on each scale degree. Turning on the secondary dominant switch adds six more chords, one for each of the non-leading tone pitches in the scale. Any other questions?
No, that's perfect. If your chord pads respond to e.g. C4, D4, ... then it is just a matter of setting up a sequence of these notes, add Tonality as a midi fx, and your sequenced chord progression will be heard.
@bleep Great! Yeah it just responds to individual note triggers
This is what I was looking for!
That's on me for making feature requests before fully exploring the app...
I think the only thing missing is the ability to easily shift all pads up/down an octave?
The app is a steal at this price.
Highly recommended.
@blakkaz No worries, glad you like it! Yeah I’ve been thinking about ways to have global transpose, octave change, and clear options. Until then have you tried the octave tool?
I have. 👍
I've been using Rozeta Scalar instead, as it allows to me transpose all in one go.
There seems to be some issues with state saving and native preset loading?
Using Cubasis, my pads are empty upon reload of a project.
I can save them as a Cubasis preset, but I can't successfully load them back in.
Saving and loading presets in app works as expected, but they still need to reloaded when opening a saved Cubasis project.
@blakkaz Yeah there’s no state saving yet, sorry. Do you think I should add a note in the description saying that it doesn't have this?
Part of the reason things like this are missing (at least for now) is that the chord pads were never in my original plan for Tonality. I added them a few months ago at the request of some people earlier on in this same forum page, and I've only started giving them real attention in the last few weeks. That does mean you've come across Tonality at the right time though!
Honestly, I'm not sure. 🤷
I don't think anyone will be disappointed with their purchase given how much it already does.
I have faith these things will work themselves out in time.
@blakkaz Okay. I've added state saving to my list though! I'll keep you updated.
@TonalityApp I really appreciate your staff and chord identifier modules. It’s really helping me visualize on a piano and on the staff what notes are being played by all my other generative apps, which then helps push my composition to the next level.
It would be nice to have the identified chords be more persistent and able to send midi to a synth. Pardon me if I'm unclear or I'm missing something. I only just started playing around with this app.
Desired behaviour example:
Generated midi fed into staff or identifier. Midi from staff or identifier would be held, instead of flashed (or maybe better recorded for later recall) while chords from the frontmost list (list of possible chords) would be able to send midi to external synth for evaluation in that chosen instrument. For extra coolness it would be nice to sound the possible chords from the identifier and then drag the one chosen to the pads of your app.
If you have Suggester and Chord X you can check out this behavior. You can drag any of the chords in Suggester into a pad on Chord X.
A thought for Staff midi. It would be cool if the staff notes were recorded and able to then be played back (from a buffer) or seen in relation (serially) to the other chords/notes played before and after.
Your efforts so far have been above and beyond most, and especially interactive from "the rabble" on this forum. Respect.
@audiblevideo Glad you're enjoying them so far! The recording to a buffer/exporting midi are on my list. With regard to persistence, the lock button in the top bar prevents the current notes from disappearing until unlocked. Let me know if you have another idea for how this could be implemented. One thing you'll be able to do in 6.3 is immediately assign input midi notes to a pad in the Chord Pad AU, so you could potentially chain the output of the Grandstaff into the input of chord pads for similar behavior to what you described. As I've told some others, I don't know why 6.3 isn't yet available; it's been marked as 'ready for sale' on my end for over a day now.
Chaining sounds pretty cool. As far as the locking behavior, I was aware and used it. However in the workflow I had set up with Cality, and other generators funneled to it, the tempo of those apps playback made it hard to simultaneously hear the flow of the notes generated and be able to freeze/lock a particular one in your app.
I can slow the playback tempo down as a partial solution.
@audiblevideo Ah yeah I see what you mean. Other than recording, can you describe your vision for any other way to show identified chords? I'm struggling to come up with a way that lets you see them in real time but also updates frequently enough.
Would be nice to have a larger lock area for the GS AU.
