Just tried this and it works a treat - thanks so much for your fantastic ‘how to’. Unfortunately, Pure Synth is no longer working in AUM and the track I had intended to use the sample on will now no longer load. Ah, the Wild West of iOS music-making...

Sorry for that. As i don’t own Pure Synth i have no way to hack around. Anyway - a learned thing is a learned thing ;)
    You‘re welcome.

Isn’t Pure Synth that relatively new one from @GospelMusicians ? Why is it no longer working in AUM?
Maybe contact them here? They seem quite responsive.

Hi there. Yes, I updated it - I think it was this morning (uk), but now the project I’ve got with Pure in it won’t load up. I’m using ios13, so am wondering if that’s the issue. But it was working perfectly prior to the update. Anyway, none of that is your concern - I’m just very grateful for your nice little explainer 👌

  • @audio_DT
Yup, just had a look in the App-Store. There was an update 16 hours ago. There seem to be quite a lot issues related to ios13 atm. So, just hang around  Wasn‘t there even a new beta of iOS 13 today? I think time will fix this.

Thanks @MrBlaschke ! Helps me put off buying Audiolayer for a couple of years or so

    Yes, how so?
AudioLayer is beautiful for own instruments and sample based stuff.
I quite don’t see how this is related. Setting up what you can do with AudioLayer only with AUM Sample-Players seems very uncomfortable and way more complicated to handle.

Well, your post was in answer to this question was it not?

"Can anyone tell me how to trigger a sample in AUM from x2?"

I am just trying to give you my thanks for the information that you shared. You didn't say anything like "Well you really should get AudioLayer but because I feel like helping here is..."

  • @GovernorSilver said:
If I just want to trigger an audio clip and don't need to do much else to that clip, why would I need AudioLayer?

Right, if just one sample is needed.

  • Weird; on the iPhone it doesn’t give me those options. Will try again.

Yeah I keep clicking that and just adds more tracks🤓😲

Was just confirming... reinstalled and reading the BM2 guide

If you click + on the track, it will open these options. Import sample is what you want. Just be sure it's an audio track and not the keyboard sampler

Right, if just one sample is needed.

I edited my post, but anyway, my use case is probably just as simple. I might want to trigger a sample once every 5 projects, not 50 samples per project.

I have heard more than 1 audio developer say that the iOS13 betas have been buggy where music apps are concerned (not atypical for OS betas).

Yeah, I’m sure you’re right. It’s a bit of a pain but I can live with it for now. I replaced Pure with a different synth, having had to delete Pure from my iPad so that the AUM project would load. Having great fun, anyway 😀

Thanks everyone for upgrading and for your feedback after the release! The introduction sale is now over.

Also, a final bugfix update is being pushed to Apple right now, which contains fixes for the last known issues, which should make 2.0.6 completely bug-free.

That is always the goal that we want to reach before moving on to new features -- now that this is the case, we'll slowly move on to the 2.1 release, which should provide a "Takes" system for loop recording, and possibly a few more bits.

Any questions, suggestions or issues always welcome, as usual!

    Cheers

Great.. Will love to see a way to keep the record button active (and paused) until an input or its triggered by another Ableton Link start/stop enabled app.. FL Studio calls it, the ‘wait for input to start playing’ button’.
It’s a chore to try and get back to Xequence to enable that record button from FD or IBassist etc..
You can start your recording from Xequence.. but sometimes you prefer to start recording from another app/device.. 🙏

We figured that nobody would ever need more than 8 simultaneous inputs when multitrack recording... could you maybe briefly describe your situation, I wonder if 16 are really needed...?

I like to record the midi from stuff I build up in GR-16, Electribe Wave and sometimes even Gadget. There are 16 midi outs in GR-16, 9 in Electribe Wave, and easily more than 8 in Gadget.

Multi-track recording works amazingly for grabbing a 16 channel GR-16 session in one shot when accepting midi directly from GR-16. So, I guess it’s more of a question of consistency. Sure there’s a way to do it directly, but if there’s no compelling reason to be inconsistent then it’s just one less question to get from the peeps down the road. ;)

That said, the beauty of X2 is if some kind of routing doesn’t do what you want, there’s usually another midi route that will get ‘er done. B)

[edit] oops. No midi out from Electribe Wave and Gadget. But sequencing from X2 is the bomb.

  • @SevenSystems - First off, your Xequence 2 app is amazing. Apologies about the earlier comment.
What's your recommendation for setting up Xequence 2 + Gadget + Garageband?

I love the fact I can add instruments with Xequence 2, and I made a template file with all the default Gadget sounds assigned to Xequence 2. The problem I'm encountering is synchronizing the "Play" and "Record" button with Garageband.

Also, I can't seem to be able to play 2 instruments at once in the channel. I assign my Akai MPK Mini MIDI keyboard (or software - MF Keyboard) on Xequence 2, to both channels but it doesn't seem to work. It only plays the one I select (which is probably intended).

I like Garageband because of its underrated features - Beat Sequencer, Auto Drummer, Auto-play, ability to export to Logic and GarageBand on iOS (should I need to collaborate with someone), and its integration with the Music Memos app.

If it helps, I also have BlocsWave, Audio Share, Audio Bus 3.

If you host both GarageBand and X2 in Audiobus, play and stop will work. The GarageBand record button is greyed out in the AB transport bar though.

The X2 play/stop button in the AB3 toolbar doesn’t usually update its appearance like it should for me. It always works though.

Yeh. In an audio output slot.

  • edited July 2019

@Samflash3 -- first, thanks for the praise :)

I do not have a lot of experience with GarageBand, maybe others can help here. However, I doubt there's ANY way of syncing the both up -- GarageBand, to the best of my knowledge, does not support any kind of syncing standard.

And regarding your other question -- yes, MIDI Thru always forwards all MIDI input from all enabled sources to the instrument (including the channel chosen for that instrument) on the current track. It doesn't matter what channel you select on your external keyboard, i.e. this is by design -- you always choose the instrument you would like to play by selecting one of its tracks in Xequence. Whichever channel the incoming data has, it gets overridden by the channel that has been assigned to the current instrument in Xequence.

    Thanks!

By the way: Looking at the many updates since release, users might get the impression as if the app were exceptionally buggy; the opposite is the case though: most of the fixes are rare and obscure edge cases, and where many developers just say "Bugs fixed." in the update description, I list literally every single bugfix every time. At least people know what they're getting 😉)

  • @SevenSystems Thanks for the response. I'll most likely tinker around with Audiobus , like wim mentioned and try and make it work.

Out of curiosity, Are you a developer, musician, or both? Also, any tips for someone starting out in mobile app development? It seems daunting but I kinda want to design some tools that I can use to make music.

Both actually... but I make music like 20 years ago, nobody listens to that anymore 😉 (you can find some of my threads in "Creations").

Also, any tips for someone starting out in mobile app development?

Sorry, I'm too impatient to be a good teacher 😏

You develop on Windows I think? I’ve always wondered how to get started without needing a Mac.

Well, I do the code editing and a lot of the testing (and graphics, layouts, administration, manual writing etc.) on Windows 7, but a Mac is needed for compiling and testing apps on-device, and for uploading to the store (at least that's the last info I got in my cave 😉).

Also, for testing the app on devices I don't have (iPhone X*, etc.), XCode comes with a Simulator that can emulate all those (slow as molasses, but after 30 minutes or so it manages to boot 😁)

Rats. Thought so. Not gonna even try hackintosh on VMware, so i guess I gotta wait. Thanks for the info.

I considered installing macOS on VirtualBox, but from what I've gathered on the net, once you got it to work, it breaks again with every update and debugging over USB on device also seems to be very difficult or impossible... so, no-go!
