@crony yes, true... actually that has worked quite well with the Xequence 2 upgrade and I indeed intend to continue down that path.
The App Store's usual "Update" mechanism should really mostly be reserved for bug fixes and device compatibility updates, and maybe a tiny adjustment / minor feature addition here and there.
Otherwise, app development for small indie developers is really not sustainable, as can be witnessed by the countless great, but abandoned audio apps.
Just add "Pro" to the name and charge $100 for it. Done.
Of course it's limited in supplied instruments, number of tracks and scenes, FX and some higher-profile features but it does give you all the audio and MIDI clip launching you want.
Here's a table elaborating on the diffs:
https://www.ableton.com/en/live/compare-editions/
You get all the MIDi editing, audio warping and time stretching even in the lite version.
It also does the MIDI routing you need in case you want to sequence your iOS synths from Ableton or sequence AU or VST synths from the iPad.
Thanks.
I just imported a multichannel MIDI file and everything got loaded into a single track. Is there anyway to have Xequence import each channel to its own track?
Sorry, Xequence currently only separates by track, not channel. It's an option I would definitely like to add in the future though.
Anyone have any Xequence pads template for EG pulse? I’d really appreciate it! Xequence 2 is my ultimate favorite app for sequencing and i’m getting more and more into making my own beats😳❤️☝️🙏
You can easily roll your own. Make a blank 4x4 grid then assign the white keys starting from C3 to the pads.
This is mine. if I remember rightly it works with the default pad setup with EG Pulse
Very tempted to pick this up. The audiodabbler uploaded some master class vids for xequence 1. Are his videos still relevant for X2? I’m always ready to explore new apps and support great devs.
Thanks for the compliment!
Yes, the basic concepts between Xequence 1 and 2 are the same and lots of the user interface are identical. One major paradigm shift between them is the "Automatic track management", so that by default, tracks don't have to be manually created and assigned to instruments anymore (which audiodabbler's first video goes into great detail to explain). You can still have that way of working in X2 by disabling automatic track management though.
Thanks for the reply. I like to get a visual understanding of an app before I dive in. And his series is the only one I’ve watched so far.
Currently, I’ve been uploading vids of AUM sessions so I’m curious how I can incorporate X2 into my flow. As Doug would say, I’m a MIDIOT. I also use these sessions as ideas or a basic structure to send to my friend for our upcoming album.
X2 looks very innovative so curiosity is boiling over.
The only real downside to Xequence compared to some other sequencers is that it is neither an AU nor an IAA app, so you cannot load it into a host. It does, however, fully support all Audiobus features so you can load it into an Audiobus session -- that includes saving all state of all apps and the Xequence arrangement itself into an Audiobus preset.
However, even when used outside Audiobus, Xequence can communicate with any MIDI-capable app via CoreMIDI and it's really quite simple to setup. (there's a slightly disturbing "IsItAUv3?" tendency in recent years, even though I don't really see many advantages to having a complex MIDI sequencer and arranger in a tiny popup window as an AU, apart from the fact that you save a single tap for saving a separate project file.)
(sorry, had to vent!)
Vent away
So, it sounds like I can have X2 sessions
Yes. For example, if you used AUM to host all your synths and effects, and Xequence for composition + arrangement, you would need to need to save your project separately in AUM and Xequence. (note that, of course, that is only necessary if you want to "Save AS". NORMAL saving when you quit or leave either application of course is still automatic).
Thanks! Yeah i was going to start putting together my own. 😌 just need the time😅
Thanks @gregsmith 😌
I don’t need everything to be AUV3 / especially something like X2. I want to be able to experiment and take apps to dark places.
I’ve started to [somewhat] solo in on certain apps in my recent vids to generate experimentation and force myself to learn them.
So, you’ve sold me on supporting Xequence 2 / I truly do appreciate you taking the time to chat with me about it. Means a lot
My latest examples
Any questions, just post them here and I'll be happy to help. I do think customer service is an integral part of any product... well maybe except for refuse bags
Wow, didn’t realize how easy it is to make the drum template😅
Now i need to get my samples right to get the best sounds possible.
Thanks @SevenSystems ! Just bought Xequence 2 so I’m about to dive in !
Speaking for myself, a single host/DAW with multiple AUs has just become the easiest workflow. A good example is an app like Quantum which is one of my favourite midi sequencers. However, I nearly always find myself using the AU midi sequencers instead, even though they aren’t as fully featured, because it just flows. Instant recall, multiple instances, less crashes, parameter automation. So don’t be disturbed by the requests for AU
It is just a really popular workflow on iOS now.
Great to hear. Have fun and be productive!
No, I do acknowledge the "AU faction" arguments as well.
However, in the case of Xequence, multiple instances simply don't make a lot of sense. A single instance of it offers a coherent, complete workflow for composing and arranging an entire song -- there's simply no need for another instance. On the contrary, I would argue this would actually make it worse
Regarding crashes -- I don't know of any current genuine bugs in Xequence, much less crashes. I actually had the idea of starting a "bug bounty" the other day
Parameter automation -- well you can automate other apps' parameters from Xequence. You were probably thinking of something else though
The only thing that is a slight advantage is instant recall. But then again, how often do you have to switch projects? Normally, at least in my case, I work on a single project continuously for hours or even days until it's finished or I give up on it
but yeah, others' habits will be different.
One thing that I would actually add to the AU advantages list is easier switching between sequencer and mixer (i.e. Xequence and AUM). That can be remedied a bit if you use Audiobus' sidebar.
Not trying to win an argument though... just offering my totally objective point of view
@SevenSystems with all my respect, why insisting on seeing the “benefits” of not adhering to the AU standard for IOS music apps?
On the desktop, I guess nobody would buy a music app that doesn’t support VST/AU/AAX and can’t be loaded on their preferred DAW. Unless the app itself is a DAW, in which case it has to support the standards for hosting other apps.
My bet is that -as you are working on a future DAW based on Xequence- you have no interest on adding AU support to X2 since it will eventually become a DAW and it will provide hosting capabilities. If that is the case, I fully understand. If not, I honestly don’t.
@SevenSystems all good! No argument here. Just healthy chat 🙂
I think it just comes down to different workflows. E.g. I switch projects continuously as I normally have about three different genre ideas on the go at once. I don’t deliberately not use non AU apps. It’s just that I have to remember to force myself to use them.
I’m able to host Xequence in AUM so switching apps is made so much easier.👍🏼
A midi sequencer doesn't need to be AU, in my opinion.
I don't plug my 1/4 inch cables onto Din connectors
@SevenSystems
With regards to AU, I would like a single track of Xequence in an instance. Effectively just one clip’s piano roll + cc editor. The only addition would be a way to trigger different saved clips similar to how rozeta works. And maybe transpose via the keyboard would be cool too.
So basically a bit like a cross between rozeta cells and Atom. On steroids.
If it was possible to bundle this with the main version in a similar way that Ape Matrix bundles au plugins for use in other apps that would be extra cool.
I think the modular nature of apps like AUM and ApeMatrix suit a very lightweight sequencer which can be controlled/triggered from other sources (you could use one sequencer just as a trigger for another instance).
I agree that Xequence as it is wouldn’t make sense as an au.
I’d definitely buy a micro version of Xequence as an AU though :-)
It'll be interesting to see how DigiKeys succeeds. It's the same concept as an AU X2, though coming from a different approach to sequencing. I'm betting it will be very popular even though not as elegant a sequencer as X2.
I get it now that @SevenSystems products are so exceptionally executed due to the fact that he develops to suit his working style. That's why I've left off trying to interest him in taking a direction that don't resonate for him internally.
Yeah and i like that.
I’d love an Slide over portrait view though like L7 looper. Wow that would really be awesome!😌
