Sure, they work fine. Not technically "in" AUM since it's X2 us a standalone app, but they send MIDI data to AUM just like any other controller.

The separate Keys and Pads apps are for those who want to use just those parts as AU's inside AUM. They are super-nice IMO. (Note: the motion sensor controls currently don't work in the AUs since iOS 13, though. They do work in the full version.)

  • Ah, I see, ta Wim

  • Is it possible to have a full-featured multitrack linear sequencer running as a plug-in on iOS? A bunch of AU instances each controlling their own track doesn’t work for me. If it could be full screen and seamlessly work just like a built-in sequencer, then great. Otherwise, on my iPad, I’m happy with Xequence as it is.

  • Just like breaking out the controllers as auv3, having a piano roll auv3 as well shouldn’t impact the ‘main’ version at all. It would just give people additional options.

I can foresee using xequence both ways. But there’s a lot to like using AUM as a modular DAW and having an Xequence piano roll would make that even better.

Sometimes a project needs different methods. I have been entrenched in Logic for decades. I’m enjoying finding new ways to create and getting away from arrange windows sometimes is necessary.

AUM needs a decent piano roll and Atom is really close. But not close enough, as it is missing out on some of the features that using it inside AUM would benefit from most (remote launching, pattern triggering, any kind of performance feature like transpose, etc.).

It would be very nice if xequence could fill that gap. The piano roll would already make a perfect single clip instance pretty much as is.

There are possibly other parts of xequence which would also work well as auv3 modules

Just thinking aloud. One of the best things about iOS is that there are so many cool ways of creating music. We all have different methods and I for one like the fact that iOS encourages me to use many different methods for different tasks.

Any way you want to create is the right way. Including mine :-D

Another way to manually select multiple items (without a rectangle) is to enable SELECT -> Add, and then just tap away on all notes you want.

That's exactly what I was searching for. Thanks!

    yes

  • Definitely thinking about getting this, think there's a couple of things I'm still uncertain about - do I need AB3? (I have v2 but mainly use AUM right now)

Is there a way to record my noodlings with mononoke? It's fast becoming my favourite instrument after guitar...

Can I play the keyboards on one device (say iPhone or other iPad) and have it route through xequence and into AUM?

And perhaps most importantly, can I sync either multitrack DAW in AUM or auria in order to sequence / play midi alongside audio? - I often work with found audio or other sources as a base...

I'm nearly halfway through this megathread so might find the answers before anyone answers, but I'm only reading it in brew breaks as on a mammoth editing day :)

    Cheers

    Chris

No, Xequence also supports plain CoreMIDI (often called Virtual MIDI) and thus can route MIDI to and from any other app or hardware device that supports it.

Is there a way to record my noodlings with mononoke? It's fast becoming my favourite instrument after guitar...

As far as I understand, Mononoke outputs per-note controller data on separate MIDI channels (MPE)... while that can be recorded correctly in Xequence with multitrack recording, your controller data will end up on separate track lanes per note, and so editing will not be as intuitive as in an app that natively supports MPE editing (if there's any on iOS). You would also have to setup a separate Xequence "Instrument" object for each used MPE channel for playback. It's kind of a hack though so I can't officially recommend it.

Can I play the keyboards on one device (say iPhone or other iPad) and have it route through xequence and into AUM?

    Yes, Xequence supports Bluetooth MIDI.

And perhaps most importantly, can I sync either multitrack DAW in AUM or auria in order to sequence / play midi alongside audio? - I often work with found audio or other sources as a base...

    You can get:

    • full sync including absolute song position if the other app supports full slaving to MIDI sync including SPP. One example of an app that supports it is BM2. I've heard that BM3 now also supports MIDI sync slave, but I'm not sure if that includes SPP support. Anyone else have an idea?

    • you can always get "bar-based" sync (including start / stop) if the other app supports Ableton Link.

  • Groovy, thanks @SevenSystems, I think I’ll go for it, even with the cumbersome multi channel thing - just want to be able to play it back and layer in other changes...

OK, great -- let me know if you run into any issues.

Just to clarify ... there is no real workable audio-sync option with song position pointer other than BM2 that I know of at this time. But that's true for any solution short of using a full DAW. X2 is the bestest ever. But iOS has a ways to go in this area.

MultiTrack DAW is a no-go for sync, it doesn't support Link or MIDI Clock. Auria Pro can sync tempo, but not song position pointer. Not X2's fault.

But can BM3 sync to song position pointer?

  • I actually have both bm2 (from years ago) and Auria Pro which I’ve been editing stems in lately so I’ll give those two a go... I do have ab2 but not ab3 but a quick test today showed that it still does stuff...

    I don't think so.
[edit] tested. Nope. Follows clock, but not SPP.

It's funny, because that's a huge missed opportunity for BM3 (in case the rest of its MIDI clock slave implementation is robust). It's literally aFewLinesOfCode(TM) to implement receiving SPP and certainly much easier than the rest of the clock stuff. Bummer.

Indeed. That would actually be one killer combination. The only reason I don't use BM3 much is not being fond of the sequencer parts of it.

'Missed opportunity' is kind of BM3's brand sadly... Coulda, shoulda, woulda....

Well, I guess we could say the same thing about Xequence 2, it would be a great addition if it could be MIDI slaved to audio apps... 😉

  • edited February 2020

Just to clarify my previous message: apps that deal with audio files need to implement realtime timestretching in order to be MIDI slaved, and that’s the reason why very few (if any) IOS DAWs or audio hosts support this feature. But on a MIDI only app this is supposedly much easier to implement (Korg Gadget does it very well).

Wouldn’t it be more reasonable for Xequence 2 to support MIDI slave mode with SPP? That would solve the issue of many of us trying to sync Xequence 2 with an audio host/DAW.

And easier to accomplish with less of a CPU hit on the MIDI side. I'd certainly pay for an IAP to enable slaving in Xeq (and tempo and meter change).

  • @Rodolfo @espiegel123 yes but Xequence currently has NO implementation of slaving at all. Not even a bit. I was referring to BM3 apparently being close already, just missing a tiny piece :)

And well, I think timestretching would be overkill for most purposes? I mean, only slight variations in timing / tempo would have to be corrected mostly... so simply stretching the audio (used to be called VariSpeed 100 years ago) should be enough? That's very cheap to do.

    @SevenSystems
“...but Xequence currently has NO implementation of slaving at all. Not even a bit.”

And that’s why there are pages and pages of endless discussions on how great it would be to sync Xequence 2 with audio apps or the importance of adding AUv3 support.

I know, that doesn’t fit your workflow, and I respect that. But still a huge missed opportunity in my opinion.

  • @Rodolfo you may be right.

Actually, slaving to MIDI sync was the second most voted for entry in the "Next Major Feature" poll, after "AU hosting and mixer". The latter seems to be slightly more problematic that expected, so I might actually change plans.

    Interesting times :)

That does sound interesting, only has a quick play and the editing is better than anything I’ve tried before, but think I’m going to have to tutorial it up a bit to get going with any audio stuff... so slick though, wish you did the keyframing interface for after effects or blender 👌

Not quite what you were suggesting, but I actually did do the audio support for Blender's sequencer way back in 2003 :D

  • Ha that’s great, I use it to lock playback and I think it may be one bit that’s not been touched since but it’s still rock solid - when working on music related projects I can’t bear having to use other software...
