Are Human Beings Insane?
I know I am. Examples?
Comments
I've yet to meet a 100% sane person as everyone is more or less insane
Well i guess you are the example then, maybe you can elaborate.
Yes. My neighbour. Three days feeding garden shredder. All day.
Well, we try to make music on a piece of glass, you decide
It’s in our very nature, our neuro-biochemistry and the evolutionary basis of cognition to be that way. Much as we prize rational thought, logic, intellectual brilliance, and values of kindness, compassion, and so on we are ‘soft-wired’ for error. Stress of all sorts makes higher function more difficult, and we regress to default behaviours, uncontrolled emotions, irrational actions.
Also ‘sanity’ itself is a social construct to varying degrees dependent on the time and place
I suppose if you call a headlong self propelled apathetic journey to our own extinction insanity- then yes- they are.
totally agree, same here 😊
Who has the right to decide what is sane/insane?
I’ve found avoiding the news news helps my mental health a lot!
Especially lately 🙂
The so called 'Influencers' do their best trying to shape a public opinion but ultimately it's up to each and everyone of us to decide for ourselves
For anyone who’s had to care for, or deal with, people with mental illness, I wonder if this discussion might seem glib and in gratuitous poor taste.
@[Deleted User].... I would rather not get personal, but if you insist. First, I agree that sanity is judged by a societal norm. Second, I agree that generally speaking we should not judge each other as sane or insane (tho 50,000 psychiatrists in the US get paid to do just that and their opinions have weight in a court of law).
As for me, my wife is convinced I am mentally ill. Now, isn't that proof enough?
This thread was inspired by Turkey Victory Day today (no, Thanksgiving has not been abolished). It commemorates the day Turks threw all their Greek neighbors into the sea for conspiring with their enemies against them. For the Turks it is a day of joy. For the Greeks it is a black and sorrowful day. I asked my wife if she thinks any of today's Greeks understand that maybe that their forbears deserved it? Her answer: absolutely not! The Greeks are fanatics! (she loves them btw and prefers them to her own Turkish people) The Greeks won't even recognize Istanbul. For them it is still Constantinople!
So much insanity in that one paragraph. The Greeks, the Turks, my wife, war, violence, judgements, nationalism, paranoia, cognitive dissonance, denial and, especially, my insane reaction to it all in posting this thread.
Freedom of thought and of speech @Purpan. If you were a mod would you close this thread?
I agree with your wife 😆 i would say posting a thread to ask if humans are insane is a form of insanity for a man who wishes for peace and enlightenment.
Nope. Of course not. But if if I was a mod, I wouldn’t have started it.
+1 since the topic can easily get pretty toxic...
Think this one could go wrong fast also.
Might be a good idea to remove it before we get to mega-thread level?
@[Deleted User], I gave up on the possibility of enlightenment in my late twenties. Not possible for someone who loves pleasure. As for peace... a nice idea.
I post this not just because of any emotional turmoil I might feel (I do).Not for any animosity I might have for Homo sapiens. Not to insult anyone with emotional issues (count me in). I post it cause it is the end of summer in some parts of the world and because it contributes to the discussion of everything. Something, that someone will always try to crush (paranoia?) but something this forum seems to allow with at least the stretching and testing of civil discussion on all issues. As to its relationship to music...well, that seems quite obvious. As to those caught in the web of iOS... Hmmm (as I wait for the never ending freezing of a 15 minute track).
Really, I don't understand this. Why the reactivity? You can ignore as always. Are we so desperately afraid that our "normal" might be threatened? The last thing we want to consider about ourselves?
Anyway, a couple more posts asking to close the thread and I will most certainly oblige, with my apologies.
Being insane is like when I was abducted by aliens...only I know.
Wait wut?
Would you ban song ‘Short People - Randy Edelman’. Or listen, and find what really said?
I wonder if it is better for you to wonder how it affects you.
Please allow the thread to affect me in what ways that it does.
As a person with multiple degrees in this psychology field, I can say, that most mental health success stories require some honesty, open communication, and humor.
Virtue signals or hyper sensitivity does nothing but demean the stability and social skill sets of a person suffering from any mental health issues.
I don't understand your comment to be honest.
Would you say it is glib to discuss diabetes?
Well, it is no different. Chemical and biological process calibrations and issues within a person's body.
Relax. Take a breath. Take a look into the mirror. Smile in the mirror. See. We are all ok.
Agree!
Im fond of you sir, your music cute as you know ☺️ but referring to your philosophical question, the fact you posted this thread IMO points at your own insanity and that is a question you need to answer yourself.... philosophically speaking. Peace ✌️ ☮️ etc.. can only exist in yourself. What do you expect forum members to say? Some are probably on medication, some are probably doctors or care for mentally ill people. Others blame society for insanity and some don't give a shit.... the list goes on. This thread will just reflect insanity.
I don’t care one way or the other but this was posted in “off topic” and the title “Are Human Beings Insane” was obviously not meant to jeer at the mentally ill. The fact that it’s directed at all human beings makes that pretty clear and is a pretty standard loose use of the word “insane”. You might as well get offended by people who say “I’m starving. What’s for lunch?” because there are people who are literally dying of hunger in the world. Sorry, that’s my rant over.
@[Deleted User]. Indeed, my way of thinking about things ( including suicide, for example) would be categorized as insanity by many people. I am not being glib here. I have been in therapy many times, taken antidepressants and anti anxiety medication. I was even married to a psychologist! Never hospitalized, never violent. Never suicidal (yet). Just run of the mill depression and existential angst. I am a human being. With all the strengths and foibles of one.
If I am guilty of anything it is for trying to look at the wheels of the train. Not a good idea if you want to keep your balance! But I do not think I will have fulfilled my human potential if I don't risk investigating everything... including the motive force that drives us to do what we consciously or unconsciously do.
I think it is wise that most people do not do this. The world only works by a collective delusion and agreement, IMO. Still, to go thru an entire life without this examination is not very healthy for an artist who wishes to express something more than ooeeooahahtingtangwallawallabingbang. Folks here cry for pro tools. Well, in my opinion, there are pro tools for life as well. Not for everyone, but yeah, some of us need them.
As you can see, the responses here are varied. No one is being ugly. It can be serious. It can be humorous. We can laugh at ourselves. We can be self righteously indignant. We can champion the underdog. We can recognize that he is one of us and not separate him with the label of "mentally ill" or even "underdog". in Scandinavia somewhere the method of dealing with schizophrenia is to welcome folks with that "illness" as part of society and not wall them off ( even if they just listen from the next room). In the US... a much different attitude.
I will close this thread if you wish, Trevor. Do you think I should? You are the mod now.
Everyone is at a different level of “insane” at any given time. There are no absolutes. It’s part of being human.
“ we are survivors.... some get broken... some get mended.. “
Joni... i think the rest of the lyrics apply well here, if you swap out the implied “romantic love” aspect and replace with general mental stability .. always brings a tear to my eye .. as does the behaviour of humans often, in fact...
oh woe!
No I dont want the thread closed at all! Im was just trying to point out that maybe you would like to find peace and enlightenment, i was a little shocked when you said you have given up on that actually. I thought you were searching for that but it seems not.
