  • Let me post some lyrics from a song sitting next to me:

The best days of your life are over
The good times, they are gone.
    Looking over your shoulder,
    Where has your life gone.

    Looking.
    Looking.
    Looking over your shoulder.
    The past was wrong.

The rest of the days of your life are still ahead
The good times, they may be there
    Look out in front
    Your life may be there

    Look
    Look
    Look out in front
The future might be fair **

** I changed this line, the first one that came to mind was
The Future may still be a c&*%
    :)

  • To allow one species to threaten the survival of the entire planet seems pretty insane..

  • @[Deleted User], actually, for me, giving up on the whole enlightenment idea was evolutionary. I am an earthling. Therefore I am subject to fear and greed, pleasure and pain, desire and remorse.

Fine for Buddha to want to "escape" all that. His choice to opt out. But, for me, personally, to try to truncate the human experience, pleasure and sufferings alike for something "otherworldly" misses the meaning of my life entirely... which is to experience all the human and earthly crap, both good and bad. I mean, I am only here for a few years, why rush the oblivion? Why not use the time to enjoy what being an earthling who can think and feel has to offer? Sure, it hurts, and compared to billions, my life has been a breeze. I can see why the Buddha's offering of relief is balm for those billions. But, honestly, how many of those sufferants will find "enlightenment "? It is a con game, IMO. Those who reach it... well you know, before enlightenment chop wood carry water. After enlightenment....

Buddhism was a great way for authorities to calm a grieving population. Accept, be satisfied, turn away from desire. No more revolution! Enlightenment, like every other TV offer should be viewed with skepticism, IMO. When you see the Buddha... kill the Buddha. Smart Zen guy who cooked up that one. And a reminder, if you want some good laughs, listen to those stinking Zen masters.

Subject or looking for it? I can only assume you make these threads for your own self gratification and pleasure then. Which is fine but ultimately a waist of time.

You must be crazy for starting this thread.

I got flak for suggesting that iOS users are becoming brats, but you are slagging off the whole species!

  • I had a brief zen flirtation after reading about Buddhism and how it had positively affected Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter. It didn’t really help me, but through the years I’ve met a few people for whom it’s been a salvation. I dunno; but I wouldn’t dismiss it.

  • I herby launch Kühlism... I am like the chosen one, king of amerika. I have the golden helmet ⛑

    I'm sure there's a cream for that ...
    Yes. I went there :D

  • @AndyPlankton, best post so far! @Simon, well, maybe someone has to push the envelope (and maybe not!) I certainly do not dismiss the species. Just the self aggrandizing. But thanks for the chuckle. Much appreciated.

And I do not dismiss spirituality, Buddhism or enlightenment seekers @Purpan2. I have loved the concepts, parables and good intentions. Those stories indeed have enriched my life. I just don't think it is viable for me to expect or even want to be enlightened (especially at plus seventy!)

@[Deleted User], not sure why you are on my ass about this. I distinctly said this was part of my own personal spiritual evolution, which includes a fair amount of investigation. I asked a reasonable question, I think. It interests me on a deeper level. I value what others here have to say about it. I appreciate the array of wisdom, experience, referents and humor. Not a waste of time for me... but maybe, yes, for you.

  • It’s a thin line from one to the other

  • edited August 2019

No, @purpan2, I disagree. Everything has its good and bad sides. Spiritual materialism, in this case, for one. The information is valuable, just be skeptical and don't get conned. The Zen literature is full of such irreverence. And for good reason. The Tao which can be named is not the Tao as an old Chinese guy said.

Purpan... your post disappeared... not sure why. You certainly have every right to challenge what folks say. Maybe a slip of the fingertip?

Define what is "sanity". Then we can start discuss insanity as deviation from sanity.

But i'm afraid "sanity" is so relative term, with different sense in different cultural and socio-economic background, that it's almost impossible to define it the way that it will fit on all humans.

Which means. We all are both sane and insane and everything between, from somebody's point of view. (In)sanity superposition !

  • @dendy, agree, of course, in general. Mutual mass murder... insane? Or sane?

  • This is insane 🙂

You mean war ? Because that's pretty much exact definiton of war. Which is something people are doing from beginning of their existence from various reasons (in most cases religion or resources). So for people, it looks like this is natural thing, encoded in very foundation of our DNA. Sadly. Reading this forum and some "warzone" threads doesn't give much optimism that people will change anytime soon in the are of hating (and eventually killing) each other just pecause of different opinions or worldviews..

For this beautiful planet would be definitely benefinital if humans would extinct :))

  • Thanks @BlueGreenSpiral! More of what i had in mind, actually... but the serious dudes took over and I couldn't resist. My insanity, I am afraid. Too serious!

  • Exactly, @dendy. But your point is well taken. Societal norms.... what do they call that... moral relativism. Very handy!

  • No worries @LinearLineman

I’m not against this thread, we probably won’t solve the human condition on here but I like a bit of mystery myself!

@LinearLineman .. I implore you.. If you think about it, the wise thing would be to delete this thread. It may have started out with harmless enough intentions, and I'm not saying it has gotten unbearably ugly, or that I necessarily object to or disagree (or agree) with any of the discussion. But it is bound to descend into religion and politics (or already has -- guilty myself; it took enormous amounts of restraint for me to not make comments that would have quickly become political... To me it seems the world is in many ways more "insane" than it has ever been in my lifetime!) And I'm sure I'm not the only one who feels this is not the right place for debating religion and politics, even if it could remain intelligent and/or civil.

  • I envy those who can discuss this subject without it being emotionally wrenching for them.

One vote for the ‘hide thread’ button.

Im on your ass as you are playing the social experiment game a little too often. Im not seeing the personal spiritual evolution bit. It seems more like messing about and it will end in tears.

    agree x2!

I have also removed Facebook from my life. Didn’t kill my account because I still need a music page but removed it from my devices and just stopped going. It really makes life a bit brighter.

That would be waste. :) But anyway, if Lineman want to ask question it is his time, and others time if they choose to respond. Yes?

True indeed. You are very correct.
