Please don’t take this question wrong, and genuinely curious. Is it because the word “insane” can be somewhat loaded to some? If @LinearLineman used something less charged, say “is the world losing its marbles?” Would that seem less offensive?
Personally the topic does not bother me, but again genuinely interested on why it may bother others.
Sanity [and insanity] is subjective.
@Lady_App_titude, so far the ship is afloat. It is a general topic (off-topic). It is not even about the world maybe (or not) being crazier than usual. Yes, I admit, it is a bit of a social experiment, tho I am all for it just being goofing around.
This forum has many strengths. Why? I don't have much experience on other fora, but I am guessing they can be a lot less civil and a lot more volatile. I am grateful for this place where our dear friend @chandroji can come and find a lot of love at a scary time. And why is he our dear friend (or at least mine)? Because he always shows himself as a beautiful being. And I believe him. His photos tell me so! Others have sought emotional support from this place and folks always come through. I have become better in several ways cause of this forum. No more grammatical correction threads! More posts that I write in reactive haste that I have the awareness to erase. Seeing people exert tremendous tolerance and patience. These folks have educated me in civility and empathy.
I know when I post something controversial I am putting myself on the firing line. I often will feel hurt or anxious when someone speaks his or her mind and it is critical. But it is instructive for me. My reactivity, my biases, my ego. I am willing to fuck up and be called on it. Not much bullshit goes over here, it is noted and tolerated, usually. I believe there is a place here for this type of talk. That it is pertinent to music and being a creative artist. I push the envelope, I hope, as a musician. I can do no less as a human being... insane or not.
Sure no worries...
I am not offended by the topic, nor do I think it needs to go away. I am the one that doesn't have to be here. It is no different than the other social experiment threads that have popped up. Would be nice to just hide threads though as I didn't want to think about this stuff here today/this weekend. From personal experience I have just had my fill of thinking about it.
Just imagine someone coming back from the war and at a family picnic there are a bunch of kids running around with guns playing and going, 'BANG BANG! BANG! BANG BANG BANG! I got you!! I KILLED YOU!' etc.. as kids do.
They are just kids playing, no biggee. But Uncle John Rambo may need to go the den and blast Golden Girls really loud.
I used to be a civilian.
You mean Randy Newman? If so, then good point. The song is a parody meant to illustrate by absurdity. Today he'd be burned at the stake regardless of whether anyone got the joke.
In the classical sense, I doubt humans are any more insane than they've always been throughout history. But this loss of sense of humor is indeed saddening.
I thought ‘Randy Edelman? What are you, crazy?’
😉
More of this is definitely needed!
🤣
Damn, I gotta watch it again, third time.
'You Know Who' I think it is insane that you might believe by dropping odd words in your posts like the above, we might actually believe you are Chinese !!
The type of insanity being discussed here is not insanity.
I think it is better thought of as being illogical or irrational, but not insane.
I think that is why some may take offense, as there are really people who suffer from actual insanity to varying degrees.
If you consider illogical or irrational behavior insane, you are sort of implying that real insanity is a myth of fake, which would most likely be offensive to someone dealing with real insanity in their life.
I stand on a street, and see a homeless person yelling at nothing, and I see some person driving recklessly on the sidewalk to pass everyone else up.
I might say they are both crazy, but I wouldn’t say they are both insane.
Usually when people get over emotional, logical thought and action cease, replaced by impulsive behavior. It comes across as insane, but it is just temporary, and things go back to normal. This doesn’t sound like insanity. It sounds pretty normal, actually.
If one considers Apple’s latest security f@c&up, their lack of response, the lack of acknowledgement of it here, I’d say we are all pretty screwed.
Welcome one and all, to the asylum.
Everyone experiences cognitive dissonance at varying degrees and at varying times. Perhaps that is more to the point than insanity.
Most people look at sanity as an almost moral issue in some convoluted way.
If not a medical issue on par with insulin levels or blood pressure, then I take a way other view on sanity.
Mental health is often more a symptom them a condition. Of what? Self.
External stimuli or spiritual or paranormal sensory perceptions.
External stimuli can be anything from drugs to toxic food or a toxic relationship. Easy enough.
The other......well.
Paranormal or supernatural spiritual health is a more complex and fascinating hypothesis.
For instance, most people do not consider the past lives effects on the current incarnation. Past life trauma, lessons that mustt be addressed or in some cases curses from others.
Most people don't contemplate the vibration level they have attained in this world versus what they are actually operating in. IF ones frequency is more highly evolved, then their is the inherent possibility they are conflicted on a subconscious and spiritual plane.
The possibilities are endless.
It takes all types of people to shape who we are. So, love it or hate it, the best and worst the world has to offer in this life time and beyond are responsible for the depths of our present world and reality.
Question it and you may not like the answers the universe gives you.
Best.
I used to wrestle with these concepts a lot when I was younger.
My personal discovery was that many people carry around a lot of convictions about the way the world "should be".
As individuals go through life with their personal cargo of "shoulds". They inevitably discovery that the world they "want", is not always the world that "is".
I think it's how each individual learns to coupe with their level of "personal disappointment" about the world, that results in certain aspects of what some might define as "insane".
One of the ways I learned to better coupe, is reflected by this classic saying in psychology..... "You can't change other people, but you can change yourself".
If a person can teach themselves let go of the inner anguish they feel over those things they feel "should not be as they are". Not dismissing what may be genuine problems, issues, and faults that may actually exist. But rather, letting go of the negative emotions that these thoughts create which fester within and block a person from realizing all that is positive, good, and healing about the world because they are so obsessed with all that is wrong.
I find it helps me if I take a moment to focus on the little things that make me happy. Today the sky is blue, the weather is mild, there's a gentile breeze blowing, and I'm about to go sit on my porch in a comfortable chair and take a moment to appreciate this nice day. Later I'll make some music on my iPad, and that's another little thing that makes me happy.
I think if one takes the time, one can find the little things that make them happy. It's just that some people take those thing for granted if they never give themselves a break from obsessing about everything that is wrong in the world.
So maybe one form of insanity is only being able to see what is bad in the would, and not giving oneself the chance to see the good.
I think this is a form of insanity that I think most people have at least some control over.
But if you're talking about organic forms of mental illness (Psychiatric disorders). I don't think the everyone in the world is insane in that way. Though I do think here in the USA there needs to be better access to mental health treatment, and as a society we need to stop stigmatizing mental health problems in ways that discourage individuals from seeking help.
Great post.
I care for three people with mental illness. I asked them if any were offended by the “glib” nature of this thread. Their answers varied from “no” to something glib that I’d rather not repeat. So, there’s an anecdote for you... for what it’s worth.
Well spotted, @AndyPlankton
I was wondering when someone would notice this preposterous syntax (like Mickey Rooney in "Breakfast at Tiffany's"). I'm not suggesting anything nefarious; I'm sure it's just good-natured fun. Just as it's quite a coincidence that You Know Who joined right around the time EyeOhEss imploded — a mere 40 days (and 500 forum visits) ago.
But all are welcome.
And @[Deleted User] I get your point about the "volatile" social experiment prompts. It's a little weird when the person who appointed himself moderator and has the power to close threads is the one who continually throws chum in the water. But also, if you don't want to play, don't.
@ZenLizard, respectfully, please explain to me what is glib about this thread and many of the thought provoking comments in it? Certainly there is humor here, but what is life without humor... I won’t answer that.. you might think I am being glib.
@CracklePot, what would you call the collective mental disorder of a particular society? Or do you think there is no such thing? I will not give any historical examples to keep this from tilting in the wrong direction. But we can all think of at least one
you glib fuck.....
@RUST( i )K ... I confess I have been glib about being glib. Glib.... hmmm.... one of those words that gets really weird and meaningless when you say it a few times.... like glub.
It takes gravitas to speak of glib topics in a such a glub way......
😆 giggle explosion. Glub could be a name of one of your dragons.
Nothing. I’m very good at making myself misunderstood. I actually do care for three young adults with mental illness, and NONE of them saw any problem with this thread. Sorry that wasn’t clear.
LOL
I thought that conversation was between me, you, mom, and dad?
Thanks @ZenLizard, for the clarification. And thank you for the care and love you give.
my point was that these three, at least, are comfortable enough with their condition to joke about it and say glib things themselves. They affectionately call my home “The Madhouse” which, again, is their joke, not mine.
@RUST( i )K .
Way to go. Now everyone knows we’re related!
@ZenLizard, seems like they are more empathetic and philosophical than many “norms” are.
Which reminds me... did you know three Jews invented car A/C? That’s right! And their names are on the dashboard ( or used to be).... Norm, Hy and Max. 😅😂🥶
Try the meatloaf, ladies and germs! And don't forget to tip your waiter!
