I am on a fence to buy a mc-707. I was wondering if someone had found a way to connect the device to an iPad Pro via usb and get the audio tracks to play in Auria or Aum? I have a MacBook Pro but all my fabfilter effects are on iPad. So I would prefer to do my final mixes on it. Thanks.

With a audio interface, like a Zoom UR-44, it is possible. I use my MC-707 as a FX device via the MC-707 send&return connections, adding FX apps in the AUM channels. Also recording in AUM is working perfect. Lots of possiblities, and very flexible to use. @thesoundtestroom will agree, I think

Have you tried one hands-on? I did and the overall experience made me navigate back to iOS apps, but that's a very personal thing for sure.

  • @dreamrobe
And if I go wild with my imagination it might even make it as AU3. How popular would the mc707 then be in iOS-land?

Now, imagine that @jimpavloff is listening :)

I plan to. But the music shops in Tokyo are still closed so I have to wait another 2 weeks or so.

I was hoping an audio interface wasn't needed, as it's the case with PC or Mac OS. I guess I will wait a bit until someone finds a workaround without having to spend money on an interface.

The reason is because the MC-707 is not USB class-compliant. That's why you need a driver in Windows or MacOS.

Wouldn't there be a workaround by connecting the mc-707 to a MacBook and then using some audio thru, get the audio to be sent to the iPad via usb? Logic Pro can be synched with iPad apps right?

No possible workaround directly since Roland doesn't make some gear class compliant and it's not easy as firmware update (but maybe possible, thinking on NI audio6/10dj did it in the past). Even possible it maybe will suppose less channels or samplerate (almost is how their edirol interfaces work with basic and advanced mode).

Maybe you can sync the iPad with the Macbook Pro via Idam, that could work

Yup I was talking directly without mac in the middle. IMO it's a bit convoluted workflow but if the OP likes it... studiomux worked multichannel, IDAM it's stereo AFAIR...

Yeah, I will try something like this if I get one. Cause I don't want to have to carry lots of stuff as I travel a lot. iPad and Macbook are a requirement for my job but audio interface and 6.35mm cables to bring along as well would be too much. So I need to find an alternative that works only with usb.

    Generic USB Host/ios intergration:-)

It’s a great day, this, Zenolgy Pro and Zenbeats, Synth heaven!

  • Holy moly! Roland supporting class-compliant audio+MIDI? Has hell froze over?

Indeed ! I thought it was the old 16bit audio only , generic mode !

  • I think the USB audio support just pushed 707 ahead of Maschine+ in my mind.

  • The ipad also addresses perhaps the biggest limitation of the 707 which is limited looper length. I joyfully pulled four trs cables out of the mc707 and replaced them with a single USB cord this morning. I am yet to work out the right routing configuration however so I would be interested in views.

Keep in mind when using 707 as interface ,it might be impossible to monitor the output of 707 passing thru FX on the ipad .

  • Yeah, I see no way of disabling internal audio and software monitoring the MC thru AUM. (Like we can with the Elektron Models).

But sampling over USB works. Random tone designer is very cool (I almost don't miss the deep synth editing of the 707). Sub steps/ratcheting on the tone tracks is cool, though no mute/chance setting, like on the drum tracks. Sending MIDI from Rozeta is fun. This is a great update!

curious if sampling over USB is available also on MC101 ... that would be game changer

  • Wait, what?!?! 🤯. Well...I know what I’m doing today!🔥

Yes, it works, on both the iPad and Windows! Shift>REC, set RecSource to PC. (On WIndows, sample from PC 3-4, not 1-2)(On iPad: PC).

The things I'm missing on the MC-101 (vs 707) are no sample slicing or deep synth editing, though the new random tone generator is very good. There's tons of ROM sounds built into this thing and imho, it sounds much better than the old MC-909 I had years ago. Apparently some of the sounds are analog-modeling synthesis (not ROM-based samples), so maybe that's it.

    Yepp!

That would indeed be a game-changer especially if it also allowed file management without having to boot it up in usb-storage mode first. (ie. when using it as an Audio & Midi Interface with the iPad one could also manage the files on the device).

I don't have an MC-101 at hand but I'll mention it when JHaQ goes live next time...

The MC-101 has always been able to sample over USB using Rolands own drivers so the question is will the 'Class Compliant' MC-101 be able to sample over USB as well? (ie. make it a breeze to sample all the iOS/iPad apps with ease).

    Time will tell...

wow that is BIG !! Even Model:Samples cannot cample from iPad. If 101 does, then it's huge !! Are you 100% sure ? Because in that case 101 is probably my next HW purchase :-)

The 101and 707 both have the ZenCore Synth engine and yes on the Fantom and Jupiter X and Xm it models 4 analog synths as well as it’s own engine.

Yes, it was one of the first things I tested. But, it looks like you can only sample into a looper track, not into a single pad in a 16-part drumkit (You can load a WAV from the SD card onto a single pad of a drumkit or even to a tone track). I don't see a way to save the sample that's been recorded to a looper track? You can load samples from another Project, but apparently only samples that are in a drumkit. I've only had the MC-101 for a couple of weeks. It's deep.

But, beware, there is no sample slicing like on the MC-707. And the Value Dial is heavily used for all operations. I hope it doesn't get the dreaded 'skipping encoder' issue like on the Blofeld/Supernova, etc.

  • @knewspeak Thanks. I need to check out the Roland Cloud and Zenology. Apparently we can create sounds in the VST plugin, then import those into the MC-707/101? I see they have paid soundpacks for the MC-707/101 now too.

  • Fantastic changes! Regarding the class compliant update, does this mean that you can now separate each individual channel on the 707 into AUM for example?
