Yep, I bought an 101. I am so hyped. I used to have a novation circuit, to sequence the iPad and jam a little. The extra features on the 101 make it a far better companion to the iPad. It is so much fun.
It's truly ace, the 101.
Lot of praise for the 101 about the place....have just seen (shhh) the 707 box being taken up the stairs for wrapping. Hope I like it as much as you folks like its sibling...
Oh man, good times are coming to you
The synthpatch generator is awesome, this alone works inspiring.
Surely it's 7 times the fun of the 101!
Does anyone know if the 101 can record directly from de iPad usb? Just audio over usb. Same way goes for the 101 to iPad, the iPad does not recognise it as an audio input.
No it can't. You can from Windows (or Mac?) as you have to load some drivery things to make the magic happen, which can't be done on ios.
BUT
Since the last bunch of firmware updates on the MC101 you can use the ipad camera connection kit that has charge port to connect MC101 and it can be seen in ipad Files as a mass storage device, so you can copy files directly to the SD without taking card out and plugging it into the PC/Mac.
My workflow...
Load TubeAU into AUM and stream whatever you need and capture in AUM. Then copy the samples into Koala and chop them up before saving them back out into Audioshare and also coping onto SD card of MC101, ready to load into a project.
Hope this helps.
You can easily edit samples in the MC-101, no need to bounce files between all those different apps. Just copy your folder of wav files over and do everything else in the 101. You can truncate, set the envelope, loop points, etc.
Yeah, but if you're sampling in IOS then it's just how I roll
Fair enough. I just wanted to put that out there since the MC-101 as a standalone sampler is highly underrated IMO. I'd say it's flying under the radar for most sample-based producers, but in a lot of ways it's like a modern update/successor to the SP-404, considering it has a large amount of sample time (up to 12 minutes mono) and some of the popular performance FX from the SP-404 like the DJFX Looper.
Of course the only big limitation is that you can't sample directly to a pad, but once you've transferred a folder of wav files to the SD card, you can do a good amount of editing, sound design, and sequencing inside the unit.
I returned my 707. Would consider a 101 as a synth module. 707 drum sounds were weak to me. A bit to clinical and dry. The box itself missed a mark on performability for me with the interface and menu formats.
My Circuit died, so I would get a 101.
But, 707, it is nice, but for more experimental stuff live, it wasn't for me.
Love my 101 but I've barely touched it over recent weeks since getting news apps at black Friday and will be even less now drambo has auv3. Think may be time to sell on
Guys! I found it! Audio over usb is possible with the iPad. You need to go into the settings and set the usb driver to generic. I could record to a looper track and sent the mix back to the iPad in a zenbeat audio track.
Sorry about that, I thought you knew. In the last firmware update Roland added a generic class-compliant driver, so it does work with iOS.
You can always add more hands-on controls through midi CC. In my opinion the Roland stuff is no more menu diving than any other synth/sampler/sequencer combo. Pretty logically laid out really and designed to quickly find some good sounds and lay down tracks. The 'groovebox" as a concept was never meant to be super high-end workstations or "Ableton in a box". The music tech market in general is mostly "prosumer". It's mainly folks new to music production or experienced hobbyists with disposable income. I don't think anyone is buying a groovebox to put food on the table.
No worries
I read about it in the firmware update. I just didn't know where to find it. The 101 just became even more awesome.
Too bad you can not export a looper track to wav, to load in a drumkit.
Yeah that's actually a feature request some have made, since it would open the 101 to live sampling (since you can record into a looper track over USB) and also overcome the looper track's time limit. Fingers crossed...
Roland has been pretty good about adding features and updates to the MC-101. I think there's been 5 or 6 firmware updates in only a year. You have to download the PDF update document also, since all the new features, key shortcuts, and bug fixes are not listed in the regular manual.
Thanks for the heads up on the pdf. That was really helpful.
The only piece of music I actually finished all year and I waited right til the end.
All MC707, no additional processing after the fact.
Awesome, @Tarekith. Does MC707 support assigning midi cc to controls?
You can change what channels each track transmits and receives on, but I believe the actual CCs are fixed. 81-83 for the knobs if I remember right.
Thanks, got it, I will have a look through manual as well.
What do you think of the TR-6S so far?
It's actually pretty great. Has built-in 606, 808, 909 recreations plus you can load your own samples. Chain sequences, and some cool effects. I'll admit at first I wasn't very fond of it because I didn't really understand the classic X0X sequencing but once I really spent time with it, I've grown quite fond of it. It's a great compliment to my MC-101. It also acts as an audio interface and you can multitrack record straight into your computer, allowing you to really polish everything. Also has an fm synth. Lot to love in that little box. Biggest complaints are the 6 tracks and how limited the substeps are. You get 1/2, 1/3, 1/4 and flam. Also, changing pitch is a bit unintuitive. But every piece of gear has its limitations, and at this price point you really get a lot.
With the latest firmware update you can Now!
I just ordered a MC707. Very much looking forward to getting it.
Should arrive on Thursday.
It’s amazing.
