Stroke Machine - massive update

  • It just updated.

  • Yay! Anyone know how well it syncs with Cubasis?

  • Well not exactly plug and play wth the clock sync...Do I really need to press that "download manual" button?

The sequencer goes from C3 to C7, am I missing something here?

  • It's not on sale. I'm sure the regular price is more than fair for what it does, but since there's no hurry I'll wait for Doug's review.

  • I'm not suggesting that the price is unfair. I was just disappointed by the brief sale.

  • BIG update!

ah, finally the screen estate had got rid of the Franke thing in the middle. That was something that was holding me back to buy Stroke Machine. How can any developer waste such precious space? Now it's gone, that's a relief.

Didn't test MIDI sync yet, but I guess it has become a really serious app now. It was good as a standalone app, but now (also featuring inter-app-audio) it's ready for perfect integration with other serious, professional apps.

Edit: ouch!, Stroke Machine just froze/crashed. Not good. Closed it and reloaded, same again. Looks like it needs another update. Unstable in the current version.

Edit2: appears to freeze permanently. Absolutely unusable. Will try tomorrow again, but so far it looks very bad.

Edit3: thinking it was just a graphic issue with iPad4/retina display, tried to load the updated Stroke Machine on iPad2. There it crashes/doesn't load at all. Outch! I'm wondering how it is performing on other people's iPads.

I'm with you, eyeballjackson. If it had been on sale, I would already be in the trenches with Phil999.

  • Working fine on my ipad mini retina..

  • edited February 2014

It doesn't even open anymore on my iPad 3 iOS 6.1.3

Reinstalled and rebooted twice and it's still the same.

It shows the opening screen then crashes.

This is very bad, a least it was working before.

How is it on iPad 4 iOS 6.1.3 and iPad Air iOS7?

thanks for the post. So it's neither the graphics nor the CPU. What is it then?

  • Ok on my Air so far

  • Been ok on my mini retina too

  • New post by Franke Music on FaceBook:

"If you are using iOS 6, please don't update Stroke Machine to V1.0.2. It crashes during launch. I am working on the fix and apologize deeply."

    Thanks! Waiting for the fix.

  • So it seems to be an iOS6 related problem and works fine on iOS7.... AND a fix is already under way. Good news!!! :-)

  • In that same Facebook thread, Franke also invites you to send him alternative color schemes: "I've wanted to have at least a little color difference between the sound and the step page (or the step buttons at the bottom, for that matter) and thought that brown would be soothing. But I don't want to argue, if anyone of you likes to contribute with a different color scheme, just wipe up some pngs and send them to support [at] frankemusic.de."

ah, that explains the problem with my iPad2 which is running iOS 6.1.3. Tried Stroke Machine on iPad 4 again (iOS 7.0.4), and it doesn't freeze anymore. Phew!

  • @Audiojunkie

Yes, it's working fine on my iPad Air iOS7.

  • Oh i love the original skin, finally some cool colors that look not like the others..

    Cheers

    @Audiojunkie said:

Yeah, @OmnilimbO, the original skin is REALLY bad. It was one of the things holding me off too. I know the sound is the most important thing, but a good UI and skin makes things easy to use. It can sound great, but if it is a pain to use, that can be off-setting.

  • @yaknepper That's cool! Everyone's different, and the original skin won't go away. :-)

  • Regarding the performance, I'm not satisfied with SM: Even in the simplest arrangements (4-5 drum sounds, a monophonic bass pattern) I hear on my iPad Air some voice stealing effects, even with an audio buffer of 1024. SM runs standalone, no other apps are opened in the background .

You will notice this only if you play a pattern over a longer time (say 1-2 minutes) while listen carefully. If you record the whole thing as performance, you can hear the voice stealing in the recording. Regarding to the cpu meter in SM, the processor isn't overloaded.

  • edited March 2014

has anybody been able to work with it now? On iOS7.1?

Edit: ah, I forgot to set the buffer back to 1024 again. Now it's more stable. This app just doesn't like input from a MIDI keyboard (hanging notes). This app should be programmed, not played. Then it runs fine.

  • Great news! Looks like my patience will pay off on this one.

  • The user and all related content has been deleted.
  • Great news about everything except the lack of song mode.

  • It's in AppStore now.... Damn I'm at work, can't play!

  • weating tomorrow for buy it :-)

  • Hi,

I have DM1 and drums in Caustics and Gadget.
Is there any added value for stroke-machine over them?

  • edited August 2014

@Shay, it's a drum synth so you design the drum sounds yourself (although you can also load samples into the oscillator slots if you want, and there are various presets for kicks, hi-hats, etc). There's a lot of depth to what you can do, and you can make some amazing sounding stuff. The drawback used to be that the sequencer was relatively limited (it could only do 16th steps), but with this new version the sequencer's capabilities are much, much enhanced. I'd thoroughly recommend the app. Though I would love a song mode!

You should check out thesoundtestroom's or Discchord's recent videos about the app if you want to have a look before you buy, but it's hard to imagine you not wanting it!

EDIT: Just to say, there is comparatively limited performance on iPad 2, 3 and the original Mini, so it really helps to have an Air in order to unlock the full potential of the app.
