    In the UK? Foreigners.

  • China just expelled journalists from The New York Times, The Washington Post and The Wall Street Journal.
We all agree that this is a disaster?

China Announces That It Will Expel American Journalists.
The announcement comes weeks after President Trump limited the number of Chinese citizens who could work in the United States for five state-controlled Chinese news organizations.

Covid-19 Crisis used to cover governmental encroachment on our privacy and free speech.

The Earn It Social Media Privacy Bill is being pushed through at a time when the public is focused on the Covid-19 crisis rather than being shelved for later when there can be more public scrutiny of it. Here’s an article from the Electronic Frontier Foundation on the topic. Audiobus forum thread on the topic

    Concerns About Earn It Legislation
    1. The proposed Earn It legislation will allow the governments of the US, UK, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand to hold social media companies liable for what their users post. This will directly lead to restrictions on free speech.
    2. Any criminals can use open source encryption to bypass this.
    3. Governments can have backdoor to access all of our communications on these platforms.
    4. Governments can look at and abuse our communications without our knowledge.
    5. If third parties gain access to these back doors, then they too will have access.
    6. They’re proposing a government commission with authority to prevent the encryption of messages.
    6. I believe such legislation will move us toward a model like China where the government tightly controls these platforms and what its citizens can post.

  • I’ve resisted these threads the last few days. I tend to think since I’ve made my opinions of the current administration clear and I doubt anything I say will sway a Trump supporter and vice versa, leave it be. But the completely disingenuous hairsplitting I’ve seen by anti-media types is shameful. You can’t fake LIVE news feeds and obviously no one can spin what your lying eyes refuse to see.

If a Trump supporter says they would’ve had no problem with Barack Obama saying “I take no responsibility” during a press conference they are lying. I lived through the Obama years quite sober thank you and remember the holier than thou outrage when he did or said anything the AltRight disagreed with. It’s extremely hypocritical and disingenuous to suggest different.

Just because Trump qualified his “you should look at getting the respirators yourselves” to the states by saying the private sector may move more quickly doesn’t erase the fact that he is still telling them YOU DO IT. After nearly a month of downplaying this thing and making the most bizarre declarations as if by him saying the virus would disappear “like magic” it would be so, this attitude of “hey everybody chill okay” is disgusting and supremely irresponsible.

He can’t point to a bogey man with this, so everyday there’s a new scapegoat angle about the “evil” MSM. It’s funny how his propaganda arm FoxNews, who spins every story in his favor, is never included in these screeds against the media. Like I said, there is HOURS of video from the last two months of this charlatan pathologically lying repeatedly. That isn’t spin, isn’t fake news, it’s fact.

I know @Michael doesn’t want these threads getting too politically charged but come on; we are in uncharted waters. Nothing, not 9/11, Pearl Harbor, the Cuban Missile Crisis, NOTHING has upended the way of life of the people on this planet faster than this pandemic. This is not one of those “it’ll blow over” situations. Our response, the way we try to heal from it and the scars it will leave will remain with humanity forever.

So I apologize for getting on the soapbox but goddamn, were YOU calmed and put at ease after seeing or reading about the last few news conferences? Are you confident the best people we have are the ones on the front lines working to contain this? I’m not.

I think we all need to be grateful for what we do have and try to aid in this situation in a non defeatist manner. This isn’t the end of the world unless we allow it to be. I know it’s boring and sitting at home naval gazing just adds to the stress but this isn’t the Greatest Generation being tasked with storming Normandy. We have to isolate with our families at home and practice common sense in public.

Since music is basically the manifestation of my spirituality, making music is my prayer and rapping it down with you cats, my fellow creatives in a community framework is like the de facto church or synagogue. So excuse the sermon... I sincerely wish you all the best and if you made it this far into this novella, thanks for hearing me out.

  • Hey guys, I know a lot of you are Americans, Im curious, do you know any Original American Preppers?
I remember prepping was a thing for a while in the US with folks stockpileing cans, guns and oil, but havent heard much about it latley. Guess they must be gloating right now.
I knew this day would come and Id hate myself for stockpileing guitar gear instead of beans :D

Anyway, Im from Croatia, right next to Italy, infected: 69, death count: 0, avaliable food cans: also 0

  • A report based on analysis of Corona virus data from China about the significance of the contribution of non or low symptomatic people with the Corona virus in its spread. The story describes how 86% of the cases weren’t detected and how those types of cases are likely fueling the pandemic.

If this is what’s happening, then it’s crucial we all assume we may be infected and act accordingly in terms of disinfecting ourselves and our living environment plus being diligent about social isolation.

I believe the public’s failure to get this message sooner and to act upon it has resulted in a significant loss of life.

Until testing is widely available and provided to asymptotic individuals as well as conducting some sort of random sampling program to be able to estimate the rate of infection in the community, we’ll be asking community health officials to make recommendations without sufficient information which will significantly undermine the effectiveness of their advice especially in terms of being able to direct resources to where they’re most needed.

Consequently, the failure to adequately prepare and implement testing will have important health, death, and economic consequences which may very likely recreate the negative cycles experienced in Italy.

The only preppers I know personally are members of the Mormon church. Part of their doctrine is to always have supplies on hand and a plan in case of an emergency. They’re not gloating but certainly thankful they’re more fortunate than those who were caught flat footed in this crisis.

I’ve seen several programs about preppers and there seem to be a wide range of cultures they come from. The mainstream population frequently has made fun of them so I’m sure many of them do feel validated that their efforts are bearing fruit now.

My impression is that most of them are concerned about taking care of themselves and their family during a crisis. They don’t believe they can rely upon their government to take care of them which has certainly proven to be true during other natural disasters as well as this one.

  • to be fair, it's generally the ones that are trying to start a race war that get made fun of, not the other ones in my experience.

  • @Max23 You missed out gun buying. Apparently gun sales in the US are waaaay up and ammo is three times the normal price.

This is anecdotal from chats on Discord, by the way. I have no data on this.

Love the concept of ammunition even having a ‘normal price’. FFS.

I don’t know if that’s completely accurate on a larger scale as there are, for example, a lot of memes about preppers out there which really don’t revolve around racism. Some of them may be inside jokes between preppers but I don’t have any real insight about those sorts of numbers.

    lovely neighborhood :s
thats what you need now, more crazy ppl with guns, great

It’s the same people who already have guns and ammunition. It’s pretty much like the stock market going down in a crisis. The people who are deeply concerned about the government taking their guns away will go on a spending spree. It’s certainly not all American gun owners or even most, just an eccentric minority who buy enough to be note worthy.

  • Well, I didn't really have much to vent about regarding this pandemic before today. However, last evening, my city ordered restaurants to switch to carryout-only services or to shut down, both which became effective today. Since my main gig is at a restaurant, this means I'm out of work at the moment.

I get that the virus needs to be staved off as best as possible until a vaccine is created and distributed (and, in the case of the US, will cost up the arse to get), but doing this at the expense of people's jobs and livelihoods? Couldn't something else be done instead such as limiting the amount of customers in a restaurant? In my opinion (and it's just my opinion), you're more likely to pick up the coronavirus at one of those big box stores while searching for toiletpaper.

there is absolutely nothing that can done then to reduce all social contacts.
    eating out is social contact.
but you can buy a resource here, food as take out,
if they wouldn't sell food they would have closed it.

if you dont do that people will drop dead like flies.
    thats what happened in Italy.

I'm still saddened about Italy. You're right mate. Best we can do is just to ride it out. Gonna see if I can find some sort of side work on Fiverr meantime.

well I hope not... I hear people talking about survivalist and preppers often but when it's about the non-racist kind it's always out of respect, but then I'm not familiar with too many memes I don't doubt you though.

Good luck. That's rough. Are you employed by the restaurant? Or are you considered a contractor? Do you get any severance at all?

Oh jeez, sorry to hear that. I think they are pretty much limiting to delivery and take out here as well. I guess to make up for lost revenue the government is allowing them to do off sales of booze which for Canada is quite a shift. Bet it sticks after World War V.
