A very pleasant return to the rock vibrations of the early 70s. Thank you!
some excellent stuff here fellas! jamming to em at work
@vitocorleone123 Love the classic sound of this, and mixed with the more live drum feel is such a good contrast. I’m not normally into straight synth stuff like this but you kept me hooked with the drums patch programming skills on point!
@DukeWonder Super dirty, enjoyed! How did you go about mixing in AUM, especially out of NS2? Did you export stems and then use the file player in AUM to load each track then apply FX? Never thought of using it like that.
@onkey Definitely picking out the Australian vibes - how did you go about recording the external synths? The quality is great. GB is always a great place to dump stuff but without time stretch and other connectivity options (Link etc) I get nervous working with external stuff (the limited amount I’ve got nowadays). Great job
Exactly. That’s how I do it with Cubasis 3 as well. Trying to get either DAW stable with a ToneBoosters or two in each channel plus up to three on the master is damn near impossible.
So I load each stem into a channel in AUM, bus where appropriate, throw on TB Equaliser on each channel/bus, and add in some ReelBus, Enhancer, Reverb, or VCF. On the Master, I use TB Equaliser as my high and low pass. I use Barricade for my loudness monitoring with slight compression and limiting. I might also add a ReelBus mastering preset.
@DukeWonder Awesome, and now having AudioShare files available in AUM directly, that makes it a bunch easier I'd think. Real cool
@iammane thanks for the ears. I played the parts live with the exception of the kick which was programmed in the beat sequencer. Do you use the inbuilt EQ or a plug-in? Trying to match the clarity you’ve got going there.
Epic. Very atmospheric. For me this is an occasion to think about the fact that big goals require big sacrifices.
Somewhat not my music but great production and performance.
In my opinion, it sounds very good. I really liked how the melody went into a minor.
A bit of my creativity. Just metal, I hope quite uncompromising:
More to listen to for me. Here's a start:
@richardyot - That was beautiful. Far better than my one attempt at a live ambient jam last year. I might have to give jamming another go - iOS is great for that kind of thing, with more and more instruments/tools. I don't know that I'd say there were really any "warts" to that song you played as I didn't notice any. I'd say: keep going! If it were me, I'd end up recording anything the MIDI of anything melodic I was playing live because I have the piano stabbing skills of a drunk walrus.
@Marcel - I can definitely get behind a good instrumental. I liked the piano and guitar, and the way you ended the track (and kept the track tight in terms of movement and length). It sounds like you had fun. What instruments did you use on the PC?
@baudious - Love the video. Love the vibe - it reminds me of some industrial music videos in the 90s, as does the track itself in some ways. I think I would've liked either a little more change over time, though, to help spice things up further. I also think my DT880Pro headphones happened to emphasize the frequencies used in the high synth bleep/whistle, but that made it harder to get through for me.
@Kitusai - I know nothing about Jazz, which I decided is what I was hearing. Had a nice impromptu feel, but retained a purpose and direction. I also like the album art, as it definitely seemed to line up with the music.
For this months it was all built in EQ, I usually end up cutting out A LOT more than I would think I would (using the EQ and analyzer function in the GB one).
Yes the spectrum analyser is a nicely done. The ability to adjust Q would be a welcomed addition.
Here we go. Thanks for the link.
Here's my entry for the month.
Love it - my only beef would be that I wish the volume of the vocals was a little higher, or maybe that the instruments were a bit quieter? But god damn, chills haha. So very well done. Apps?? I know you use GB can't imagine you did all this there??
Excellent sound design and nice composition. The track flows beautifully and is fun to listen to thanks to the strong melodic content. I really like the slightly gritty texture on the synth that comes in at the two-minute mark.
Some nice textures and a good arrangement. I liked the trap-esque hihats as well.
Nice sweeping instrumental. I like the animal noise sound-design which adds a nice touch to the track.
Brutal 😈
The guitar is very tight, very well played, and the whole thing is well-produced. It might even sound a little too clean for the genre, and it might benefit from a slightly dirtier mix (tape saturation for example).
The verse vocal is spectacular.
Good job, it's a very good song and well remixed.
Actually, yeah it was all in Garageband. Mastered it using the Barkfilter trick and the Infected Mushroom Wider plugin. Here's the unmastered version -
Other plugins used include Blue Mangoo Attack Softener, and Eventide Blackhole reverb.
Dodie did the acoustic performance of the song in her channel so I couldn't do too much. She sings a lot quieter, so it was a bit of a balance trying to match it. That said, I coulda extracted the vocal from the audio using melody.ml but I didn't want to change the original much.
@richardyot - Thanks. I'll listen to the remaining posts later today and make a long comment.
Damn, and this is exactly the reason why people shouldn't slag on GB too hard lol... this is really awesome. And understood, that's tough then on the vocal cut you got. All in all though, damn. I am super impressed!
Thanks. Really appreciate the comment and support.
@richardyot - Great job on the thread. Plus, that ambient track was a journey. Wheremm
@Kitusai Seriously, where do you get your horn sounds from? They're great. My next project might just involve horns.
I might recommend a bit of panning and selective choices on the song. Experiment with giving some of the melody some shining moments. Sometimes, you might want to hear more of the arpegiated parts as a breakdown, than the horns, and vice versa. But overall, that melody was stuck in my head after the first listen. So, great job.
@iammane
Getting a bit of murder mystery vibes on a casual sunday morning walk. That funky beat kept my head banging. Love the piano roll. Was the drum from Blocs Wave? Liking the stutter effect. I was just thinking I need to dive deeper to Effectrix and Aparillo.
@baudious
Ambient spacey soundtrack. Nice. Haven't done much exploration in space but this was a trip. Agree with @richardyot point on length. I've been forcing myself to try and keep songs 1-2 minutes in length to challenge my creativity. Plus, it means I have a lot less to edit and upload, while giving me more time to work on more stuff.
Although, I do still make full length songs.
@spyrogaia
Nice. Really liking the retro (is this sound retro? Idk) feel of this song. What was your sound selection for the introduction? I didn't think Gadget had sounds that you could use in rock.
Also, did you play the bass or was that also from Gadget? I'd agree on vocals, but recording vocals has been a pain for me in Gadget so.
Overall, really impressed. I gotta dive into Gadget soon. Already have the app.
@klownshed
Dude, this is a head bang. Definitely something I'd want to hear in an EDM rave. I'm definitely interested to see the master (if you do feel up to it). The melody travels between classical music, familiar melodies, EDM rave nights, and a hit of unknown, with phat bass lines.
I might recommend add a bit of vox transitions, impact samples, and maybe some small riser and stutter effects before it hits the main drop. But that's just me being a bit analytical (something I'm working on to get better at sound design).
Also, how did the entire mix come together? I get Nanostudio for the sequence, but what about the remaining audio?
Also, if you need help in mixing it, let me know. I'm learning more about sound design, and making an intense EDM drop has been a bit of a challenge for me, but you nailed this. HARD.
@baudious
Cool panning effects. That intro melody was so nostalgic, yet I dont believe I've heard it before. You went through a lot of changes on this one. Was that really all GR-16? Glad I got the app during the most recent sale (lol).
@vitocorleone123
Liking this retro vibe. Is it the app or the actual synth that you have?
@DukeWonder
Why do I feel this could be a dope rap song? Great job. Now I feel I gotta look further into Nanostudio 2.
@onkey
Definitely on key. Great job on this sound. What synth was prominent at 1:32? I'm trying to make a synth pad with something that aggresive so I was looking for some visual references.
@Slava
First 3 seconds: Oh...that's not so loud. Maybe I should increase the volume.
4 second in : WHOA, that's loud.
Definitely a rock song. Great guitar shredding. Was that you?
Recommendation: Try adding a second line using Eventide Blackhole Reverb on the lead vocal to give it more weight. If you don't have it, take it down an octave, add a little reverb, slightly lower the volume, and move it very slightly before the main to add a bit more layer and ruthlessness.
@Samflash3 Yup! 50% blocs, 50% some... GB kit. Forgot which. Aparillo is a BEAST haha, I still haven't really wrapped my head around it yet. Effectrix is quite good especially if you play with the modulation lane at the bottom, can churn up some cool sequenced FX.
Thanks a lot. I want it to sound cleaner and neater.
Yes, I recorded the guitar parts myself, but frankly speaking, in very small fragments. It’s just mounted there.
Thank you for describing this technique for the reverb. Most likely in this song I will not change, but in the future I will try.
A very interesting main musical theme, groove. Such a breath. It was possible to use "probability" on a hi-hat to give it an element of unpredictability.
@Samflash3 It actually started off as a beat but evolved a bit. I could still see someone like Tech N9ne or Krizz Kaliko jumping on it.
@Samflash3 A thoughtful and tasteful arrangement. Sits just right with the vocal and pleasing to the ear. To answer your question, there are three string layers @1:32. A slightly tweaked version of TAL-U-No-LX preset Full Strings is doing the heavy lifting, backed by a custom Sunrizer patch to add some 'air'. Micrologue continues from the measures preceding - IIRC a tweaked version of the Brite Strings preset. I suspect the drone which underpins the track adds to the thickness.
@slava Superbly tight production there. Reminds me of the shoot 'em up games I played in my youth. The vocals are on point. Perhaps bring them up a smidgen so they cut through some more.
@spyrogaia sorry I missed you the first round. Good sound choice and variation throughout to maintain the vibe. The melodic bass at 2:01 is a clever counterpoise to the rhythmic bass in the lead up. The second drop felt a tad sudden but perhaps that was your intention. Enjoyable listen overall.
@richardyot Appreciate the ears!
