    Bonjour à tous !
    Hi everyone!

    Really happy to see @richardyot is keeping this creation thread alive. Didn't post here for a long time.

    Here is my contribution for this month. Composition and lyrics from @LinearLineman. Originally, he asked me to sing his lyrics, but I ended creating a full arrangement around his beautiful Rhodes part.

    Listen to Blue Sky Or Hurricanes (Jankun version) by Michael Levy on #SoundCloud

    *************EDIT**************

    It seems that @LinearLineman posted the wrong version by mistake. Here is the right one. Sorry for the long post

    Listen to Blue Sky And Hurricanes (Jankun Final Mix) by Michael Levy on #SoundCloud

    *************EDIT************

    For those interested, there is another version arranged by the great @Daveypoo. Both arrangements are really different. Comments are welcome !

    I like the arrangement, the synths and the Rhodes are great, and the vocal is excellent. My one crit would be that the drums could groove a bit more, the beat is too broken and choppy for me and it detracts from my enjoyment of the track.

    Good vocal melody and great performances all round though 👍

    Really loved this! Awesome that this was all GB as well. Thank you for sharing. :)

  • I’m a really big fan of the classic synth sounds and your piece “underway” delivered really well. Lovely melody and movement. I’m also a fan of bass (guitar or synth) so perhaps that’s the only thing missing for me from this lovely piece of work. Thanks for sharing.

    I really enjoyed your piece “Grimes” for it’s fat low end synth bass and the cool flow. Through my headphones it felt like that sound sat at the back of my skull somewhere! Super!

    Re: your comment on my piece: Thank you for the feedback. The second drop: I really just wanted to keep the piece within the 4 min length. :)

    On your piece “Plagues”: Great work here. I got the feel of the didgeridoo style drone in there. Loved the beeps and bloops and all the sound effects and all combined adding to that sense of underlying dread. Did it change key around 2:20 mark?

    The sound selection was intentionally retro yes. Also I used acoustic drums “Gladstone” and bass form “Madrid” (actually two instances of this. The bass “solo” was the other instance with fretless loaded). The idea was to make an 80s style of rock-anthem like piece. Part of an album.

  • @spyrogaia thanks for clarifying - can't argue with brevity ;) To answer your questions: The drone is indeed designed to capture the essence and timbre of a didge. It's considered somewhat of a sacred instrument here so I avoided sampling. Believe it or not, all the creatures were 'captured' using the same patch - by setting just a handful of partials in the DCO and modulating the speed of the sweep-able formant filter. I got lucky with some frog, crow and kookaburra-esque noises which were chopped and arranged as appropriate. The song key is technically unchanged from 2:20 but with an oddball chord in there and some modal interchange. If you're interested, the progression is broadly Gm/Bm/Bb/G7/B7. I think it works because the pedaled high D note sustains the tension until the very last change. Thanks for your insight, it's exactly what I was going for.

    A few more. I think I'm missing 1 or 3 people still.

    @JanKun - Only listened to the first, listed track. I really enjoyed each of the individual elements. However, I found them a little disconnected from one another overall. As @richardyot said, I think it was the drums... maybe a combo of a little softer/vocals a little louder, some EQ cutting around the rhodes and vocals. Do something to make them wrap around the vocals and rhodes rather than compete. Out of curiosity, did you compress 1-2 db on the mixbus?

    @Samflash3 - Very pretty. I'm a sucker for female vocals and harmony. Maybe reduce the overall reverb a bit and carve some space around the vocals with EQ and/or sidechain compression? I admit I also wanted it a bit longer :-)

    @Slava - Not quite my genre (which is going to bias me against being 5min long), but I appreciated the tempo changes so it wasn't all bambambambambam. I also liked the contrast from the growl and the chorus on the vocals. I'm used to that from industrial music. Heh. Sometimes I found the stereo image a little unbalanced left or right - that might be a genre thing, but maybe some elements were panned too hard. If I was lacking something, it was some "crispness" or definition. I don't think I'd want it in the drums. Maybe some of the solos or the vocals?

    @onkey - It just started and I already love the dijieridoo-ness (not sure I spelled that right). It's been awhile since I listend to him, but some vague connection to Brendan Perry's solo album. Maybe crossed with Carbon Lifeforms - in a good way. Very nice, authentic concept piece. Enjoyed it.

    @DukeWonder - Grimey! Could've used even more squelchy-ness. Heh. Nice and raw, driving to conclusion. I enjoyed it.

    EDIT: As for my track, yes, that's my OB-6 desktop. I heard it online and loved it. Listened in a music shop and got goosebumps. It cost a little more than my newish home-built computer and I love it to pieces. Just not literally, 'cause that'd really make me sad. I wanted to FEEL the OB-6iness of it - which is easy to do when you play it. I couldn't resist adding on the ending little filter sweep, which is pure OB-6 awesome. I'm hoping the next track I use it in has a more future pop feel. But... I just follow the music, so I really have no idea (and is why I'll never have an actual album, because that's hard when nothing sounds similar).

  • @Marcel

    It is a really nice track with neat production. I Especially like the drum sound. The only thing it needs is your voice!

    @baudious

    This one is not exactly my cup of tea in terms of synth sounds choices but the video got my attention until the end. Interaction between music and video works really well. A lot of work must have been put into this track. A bit more variation in the music could make it even more enjoyable. Or maybe make it a bit shorter.

  • @Kitusai

    Cher ami confiné, merci et chapeau bas ! Superbe !

    So far my favorite track for this month. The production is really great. The bass sound at the beginning is so deep, it gets you directly in the track.
    I can sense a lot of influences mixed together. Jazz, afrobeat etc. A lot of tension, and the rhythm is really hypnotic. Really beautiful work.
    Bravo!

  • @iammane

    What a bass sound. So deep!
    Love the production on your track. Drums keep evolving with the track, they are extremely well put together. I like the pads and the reversed sounds as well, they serve the dynamic of the track perfectly.
    Beautiful work.

  • @spiteface

    I like all the elements in your track. your sound choices are nice, good sense. I like the melody, rhythm and sound production.
    The only thing I think you need to work on is dynamic (I have exactly the same problem). What I mean is that all elements are present from the start and keep running through the whole track. It is kind of monolithic. Maybe Remove some of them at some point to bring more Dynamic to the track.
    But it is really nice.

  • @JanKun

    Nice melody and I like the vocals and backing vocals. They’re nicely recorded and mixed.

    But I’m in agreement with the other comments about the drums. I don’t think the sounds and best itself suit the track and the mix doesn’t quite sit right either. The ride cymbal feel like they’re not allowed to ring out, the kick is a bit weak and the compression makes it feel like it’s not quite planted. In my humble opinion the instrumentation is quite busy so maybe a slightly less busy drum groove would help rather than hinder the rhythm of the keys/guitar part.

    A lot of potential though and taken as a demo it’s a strong one.

  • Good stuff all around! When does the compilation album come out? lol.

    (Random thoughts, hope to share more later... )

    @JanKun and @LinearLineman
    Sweetness! Really catchy. The vocals match the feel of the music, and don’t overwhelm it. Which is often easier said than done, sometimes. A nice balance. Yes, agree with others that the drums could be improved, and made smoother or something. Kinda preferred the clean and tight @Daveypoo mix. The keys are wonderful, both Rhodes and synth. Another top ten hit!

    @onkey
    Wow, very nice indeed. Seems to be in the “classical synth” style of JMJ or Vangelis (to my ears), and would not sound out of place on one of their albums. Cool and dramatic intro. And the whole piece conveys deep feeling.

    @baudious
    Epic! Sprawling and ambitious, love it. A real trip, gotta love a song (and video too) that cuts loose and explores. Very interesting beats and memorable sounds. Keep it up...

    @Marcel
    Very well crafted, imho... Catchy and heartfelt tune. Kind of reminds me somewhat of Journey’s Trial By Fire album, which is one of my all time favs. Keep on rocking!

    Here we go. Thanks for the link.
    Here's my entry for the month.

    What’s not to like? Really nice. Excellent vocals, both performance and recording. Nicely balanced mix.

    The odd string note is slightly harsh on AirPods but probably sound great on speakers (AirPods can be quite harsh in that frequency range).

    Nice and short. Could easily have the final chorus extended but it leaves you wanting more which is good.

    Excellent. :-)

  • @klownshed

    Thank you for taking the time to listen.
    Your track is a really nice.
    The first thing that striked me is neither the sound or production, it is the composition itself. It is really modern but at the same time there is some "baroque" touch to it. I am not musicologist, sorry if it is not the right word.
    All the synth sounds are getting well along, I really like the drum texturesas well. There is a nice dynamic all along, which keep the track interesting until the end.
    Sounds are very synthetic but really warm. I really like the grit.
    Really beautiful track.

  • @vitocorleone123

    Thank you for your comments. They will help me improve.

    I really like the overall vibe of your track. Solid melodic sense. I especially love the first synth sound. It is really nice. And I like this kind of distorted sounds that comes around 1'50. Everything stands well together. Your drums are supporting the track perfectly without being too present. in its current form I would only say it is a bit long. I wish there was some vocals or maybe some kind of bridge at some point. Apart from this, really good work.

  • @JanKun sounds dope I really wanted the vocal a little more dominant , the Rhodes sounds great it just battles u a little . I like it alot

  • @Samflash3 great track! Love the vocals a lot . This is a great arrangement and production awesome job!

  • @richardyot cool, very cinematic I can visualize a samurai death scene in a snowing scene . Def a great score start.

  • @Marcel sweet man I am into it. The piano might be a little too much at a point there . I would like to hear a little automation in planing just to liven it a little

  • @baudious cool love the panes kick and samples the distorted synth is cool . I kept wanting to hear a change an upbeat or something but good job

  • @Kitusai love the different influences it’s something I’ve always had an interest in . Sound like a traditional sound of sorts in a way

  • @iammane love the jazz flow really cool vibe to it the beat is cool and lively great production

  • @spiteface cool you did a good job finding your sounds they sound great together give vocals a try!

  • @klownshed cool , I love iPhone jams they always end up being something I get close to cause the constant access. Great drop on that beat btw. Good stuff

  • @JanKun Commenting on your final edit. Very strong song and performance all round. Infectious melody juxtaposed with a slightly angsty lyric. The first 11 seconds set the tone beautifully with the creative guitar work. Mix-wise, I'd liked to hear the rhodes more present as it drives the song and is interwoven melodically with the vocal. Perhaps reduce its ambience and accentuate the 'bell' - particularly in the interludes where my ears are a little confused as to what to listen to. The bass playing is on point but again it's a little lost in the mix - as is the kick. Your fills are nicely done and as others have pointed out just pare back the main groove a tad. Enjoyable listen - thanks!

    @haulin_notes Love your handle! Daryl and John are possibly my favourite dudes of the 80's. Appreciate the support.

    @trackedout Your good indeed! Superb production quality - loved it!

    OK. Think I've caught up. Thanks, everyone, for listening to my submission this month.

    @iammane - Nice bass guitar playing in this one, and also the percussion fit the track nicely (if sometimes feeling a bit "hollowed out" in the middle of the stereo image, though I understand making space for the bass guitar sound). Is April mellow month for some of us? :-) I also liked the little synth swarm at the end.

    @spiteface - More aweso-mellow tunes. Nice and swirly, without it becoming a distraction. I think the xylophone/metallic key really took the track to antother level compared to where it would've been without. Nice job, and good vibes.

    @klownshed - Love the intro. Right around 56 seconds I would've dropped everything out, extended a note or something, then started in with some percussion, even if under the same melody. Just like you did seconds later... maybe sooner? Liking the gritty synths. Track could definitely benefit from a bit of EQ and compression, esp. compression on the mixbus by ~1db to help "glue" the parts together. My other favorite part was the 2:50s with that bad-ass distorted bassline.

    @trackedout - Great bassline and drums (though I think a bit less bass might've helped, and maybe more centered - there's some distortion here and there that sounds like it's from the bass eating up all the bandwidth... and there's some microphone squeaking in there, too, which was hitting a little high). I enjoyed the track. Feel free to make the track more about your vocals! I can't sing worth a damn, but anyone who can should make the most of that fact. Also, maybe with a touch less bass, you could've left a bit more warmth in the vocals. I guess I'm picking on production because the track was great!

  • Its been three years since I posted anything here. Post and be damned!

    Made this trying out Roland Zen. Loved the default drum kit but got frustrated with ‘slow downs’ after I got a few tracks going and exported it all over to Cubasis 2 which is atm my daw of choice.

    Its a “reggae” track made at 120bpm! with some lyrics made available for a remix competition 4 years ago. I time stretched them to fit this beat.

  • Hey, everyone. I know I’ve been absent for a while and that I’m submitting this track a bit late, but I thought I’d share. It’s a bit different from my previous work, and that’s somewhat the point. I hope all of you are doing well and I’ll try to catch up listening to and providing feedback to as many of your tracks as I can.
