@richardyot
What a rich and cinematic track you improvised. The sound design has so many different nuances and subtleties that I can find new things I didn't realize after another listen. The patches you used and constructed blended very well together and had tonal characteristics similar to that of the ARP 2600 (for the lead), and the Roland D-50 (for the evolving pads). Great job.
@Marcel
Despite not being a cover from Pet Sounds, your track actually incorporates quite a bit of similar processing elements to the mid-late 60s Beach Boys productions like the reverb on the drums for instance. I also like how you have the chorusing effect engaged before it comes in so it creates that panning noise. I think you could maybe bring up the guitar solo in the mix but liked the almost Santana PRS style tone.
@baudious
Your track has a lot of really cool sound design throughout with the modulated frequencies, filter envelopes, and astronaut/NASA audio broadcast recordings. I liked the beat to your track and thought it carried everything else quite well. I would say, however, that the hard panned synthetic hats and other percussive sounds were a little harsh on my ears, personally, so I would roll of a little bit from 2.5-5.0kHz to tame them a bit. I also think your track could benefit from some hi-pass filtering on tracks other than the kick so you can have more headroom and maybe allow your kicks to provide more of an 808-like low-end.
@Richtowns Fun beat coupled with a quirky vid and right amount of dirt on the instruments to capture that reggae goodness. Cool interplay between the hi hat and shaker in each of my ears keeps things lively and interesting. Detecting some snap, crackle and pop here and there. Deliberate or issue in the mixdown?
@FunkMachine Arrives late to the party then steals the show. Not sure what your wheelhouse is but as a foray this is truly excellent! Had me thinking there that the kick was beating cardboard and then you go and deepen it into my chest. So satisfying. Lots of neat tricks on display here. Apps used please? Where’s that sweet vocal coming from?
Good song, the bass is a bit flabby sounding and the vocal could maybe come up a bit but otherwise all good.
It feels more like 60bpm (half-time) which actually suits the music better The video is a nice touch, I like the dancing rooftops. Good production and nice bassline. Some of the brass accents are a bit too loud though, in relation to the rest of the instruments.
I really like this, it's got a great main melodic theme/riff which is nicely catchy, and I also love the sound design with the mangled vocal sample on the lead instrument.
Nice arrangement, that keeps the music flowing, and a great summery vibe all combine to make a great track. Good bass as well. 👍
@onkey
To begin, I should start by saying that this track was made in Logic but could likely be easily recreated in any iOS DAW. The kick drum was made in Alchemy with a basic triangle wave and filtered noise. I used 4 separate envelopes to control the pitch, amplitude, and LP filter. The snare came from a heavily compressed LM-1 Snare I made in the VPROM desktop plug-in. And the claps were synthesized with modulated noise in Serum. Both the Sub and plucked bass were made with Alchemy and then side-chained to a ghost trigger. The pads were made with ES2 and Logic’s EXS24 sampler. The keys are a variation of the DX7 E.Piano 1preset made in the FM synth Dexed. The Arp was made with the Roland Cloud Jupiter-8 (just the 30-day trial version, I can’t justify the subscription cost). Finally, the vocal chops were taken from the “Pads | Angelic Choir” patch in alchemy but was multitimbral so I sampled the one voice in the patch I liked to then be played in the sampler as well.
I know this is a far too detailed response, so I attached the vocal patch sample for anyone to download.
@Kitusai
Your track incorporated some good esoteric ambiance that I’m not used to, so I think it’s nice to hear something novel like this. While, I thought the reversed of the trumpet was a cool experimental element in your track, the trumpet/brass seemed to have some dissonance which may have very well been the goal, but for me, I think took my attention away from the other cool parts going on such as the jazz-like groove of the drums and bass chords. I think you can go even further with the dynamics of your track to increase the impact of some sections.
@iammane
The Precision Bass tone you have in this tracks makes it for me, regardless if it's from GarageBand because you implemented a really nice groove and programmed the accents and hammer-ons very well
@FunkMachine thanks for sharing. I'm looking forward to dropping the choir patch into something like Quanta.
Anyone lurking: there's still time to submit your sounds for April!
@richtowns - Nice groove for a Friday afternoon as I listen. I think the horns with the 3 tones, in addition to the vocal samples, were the most successful of the samples. Some of the others seemed a bit disconnected from the music. The video was amusing, having the buildings dancing. I look forward to hearing the next piece - keep submitting!
@FunkMachine - Doing different things is part of the fun! This was a nice upbeat track that sounded good, too. Nice strong bass, but it was controlled and not flabby. If I had to find something to critique, it's only that I was wishing the beat around that ~1min mark wasn't so strong/loud vs. the rest of the sounds, especially since it really kicked in a short time later (which may have felt like even stronger of a kick if the beat was less noticeable up front). Well done.
@spiteface - about your track. Nice! Nicely layered tracks. Like it. Positive vibe.
@spyrogaia - about your track. Good production. Eq good. Spotted a bit of clipping at 3:21 (but it is not that important). Nice variety. And thanks for listening to and your words about my track.:)
@DukeWonder - about your track. I like the vibe and the depth of the sound! Nice beat and low eq-ing. And thanks for your kind words about my track! Yeh, it is a bit ‘normal’ , a sort of conventional composition.
@onkey - about your track. Like it. Very nice choice of nice synth sounds. Good change of chords, keeps it interesting. Good use of the (what is it) birds (?) sounds. Thanks for your kind words about my track!
@Slava - about your track. Not my type of music, but apart from that: good composition, with diversity, think within the genre it is very good! And the sound of it is also very good!
@Samflash3 - about your track. Great track! Very well produced, mastered, mixed, composed, sang, playing of instruments, etc. Catchy. Classy. Pro stuff. Only thing is perhaps the final seconds could be perhaps a little better: there’s a click and the fade out isn’t complete, longer fade out would be better in my opinion, you have cut it too early imo.
@JanKun - about the second of the three tracks you posted. Drums have a live feel, which is nice! The whole track feels actually like I am in the room with it. Nice! Good production also on other aspects. Very good diversity of instruments, which keeps it very dynamic! Creative stuff!
Listened to the third track of the three as well. Indeed very different! Interesting, a completely different vibe. Nice mix too!
And thanks for your kind words about my track!
@vitocorleone123 - about your track. Production is good, different layers are very well arranged evenly. Eq: perhaps more low end. The chord progression would benefit from more variety in my opinion. Solo would benefit from going outside the chord line in my opinion.
Thanks for your kind words about my track. You asked what instruments I used on PC. Made a list:
The solo acoustic piano I played on Acousticsamples C7 Grand,
the electric piano is EZKeys Classic Electrics Rhodes MK I,
the drums are EZDrummer 2,
the basssound is E-instruments eBass for Studio One (Vintage Pick Production),
the synths are from Arturia Analog Lab.
And I used a lot of plugins to shape the sounds.
The guitar solo at the end I played on my PRS Mira 2007.
Sorry to be late for listening! What a production this month!
@richardyot beautiful space odyssey ambient track. Hey it’ a long one :-) Btw I like too the @spidericemidas presets
@Marcel I first thought with the title that it was a Beach boys cover… But no! A nice cool ballad very pleasant and relaxing.
@baudious everybody want to escape in space those days :-) Cool videos.
@iammane very cool and relaxing too. The break is nice and the whole sound is well equilibrate to my ears. In your Soundcloud stream someone says « could vibe to this at the airport for sure ». Well yes, after the airports reopen!
@spiteface first try, good try! Very well done and nice to listent to. I was waiting after a vocal part!
@spyrogaia I don’t like symphonic rock but in it’s kind it is well done. Maybe a little more variation?
@klownshed The ‘Renaissance’ kind of ‘Clavecin’ with a hip-hop beat coming through during the intro is fun and winny. Then it evolves in something else keeping interest. Good melody around 2’ The ending rumbling(se tortillant) like a snake is what I preferred.
@vitocorleone123 Beautiful melody. I love the short passage around 2’. I don’t know why it reminds me a bit of Moody Blues.
@DukeWonder I like the work on sounds. Maybe a bit too repetitive all along?
@onkey I liked this didgeridoo-like ‘bourdon’ with a kind of oriental melody on top
@Slava Yeah! At least some metal! Very well done. The number of breaks is phenomenal and realization is perfect. Well the whole is not light poetry isn’t it? :-)
@samflash3 Yeah! At least a human voice :-) Very moving song, perfect instrumentation and top singing. Too short!!! More, more please!
@JanKun Very good sugar-pop song not far as @Richardyot (except this month) style. The swirling choirs around 2’ are top. The whole song is really good.
@trackedout I like the atmosphere and as usual I don’t understand enough your language to understand what you say. The fuzz box reminds me my old MXR :-)
@Richtowns Reggae is too rare too here! The video is really funny and fits well with the music. The smile of the month!
@FunkMachine A spacey relaxing tune with beautiful sounds. Many variations keep interest all along. Nice job.
I hope I forgot anybody!
Indeed, un très bon cru, très varié ce mois-ci !
(and thanks for your feedback also)
Thanks to everybody for listening and for your comments.
I hope I didn't miss many, I tried to listen to them all :-)
See you for all for Mays song of the month I hope...
Yes, the May thread will be open on Monday 👍
This I a great song. Nice work @Marcel. I put it in my favorite to listen to it again.
Ahem,
Who knows what day it is?
Sneaky! I'll listen to it before Monday, when the new thread opens.
@Jocphone I swear here we are still in April! Excellent tune I love it! The Crack Emcee at his best. Could you please post the lyrics to make Google translation work as we sleep?
Could be two minutes you end up regretting!
You will have to ask the boy borne of light, Mr @Bluepunk the pissed in this equation.
@Kitusai Thanks. The main vocal is below. The call and response (L and R) were haphazardly ad-lobbed into the furnace as I went and I can’t remember what they are. Sorry.
I am going to kill myself
Not sure how just yet
Could jump into a lake
But that means getting wet
Could swallow lots of pills
But that means buying more
Could fall onto a knife
But that means getting sore
Could hang down from a beam
But that means tying knots
Could pull a trigger tight
But that means hearing shots
Could use a plastic bag
But that means wrapping tapes
Could quaff a quart of wine
But that means crushing grapes
I know what I will do
Wait for the 44
Lay across a rail track
But that means getting bored.
I’m not gonna kill myself
Not sure why just yet
Could walk into a bookies
But that means I’ll bet
Could get the odds on why
I haven’t got the guts
Could get 16 to 1
But that means I’ve no nuts.
@Bluepunk Thanks that's optimistic and funny
Trying to knock up a very (VERY) quick vid review of everyone’ songs, but I’m looking after next door’s young children, so it’ll be tailored to them. No swearing etc. Sorry.
@Jocphone and @Bluepunk exceptionally witty song. It's rare that you get to hear a funny song on the subject of suicide, but this one definitely is! The edgy music and delivery just add to the dark mood
I’ll take the pill option please...plastic bags take far too long. No kids were harmed during the making of this video. Afterwards is a different story. They had fun. Um.
There is meaning to the two/three word reviews. Hey, I don’t just throw this bollocks together you know All songs are very good and worthy of B Plus grades.
@richardyot @Marcel @baudious @Kitusai @iammane @spiteface @spyrogaia @klownshed @vitocorleone123 @DukeWonder @onkey @Slava @Samflash3 @JanKun @trackedout @Richtowns @FunkMachine
IT SPECIFICALLY SAYS ON THE BAG NOT TO PUT IT OVER YOUR HEAD.
Hahaha! Really enjoyed that. Best song of the month, I reckon!
LOL!! I hope you also were not harmed in the making of this!!!
