Why is there no Prophet-5 emulation on iOS?

Other than in Syntronik...

We have many other classic synths on iOS, I wonder why no-one has done the V?
I’m not that familiar with the idiosyncrasies of its sound, but a few of my favourite artists used it a lot back in the day.

Is it because it’s main appeal was that it was programmable, as opposed to sounding ‘better’ or significantly different from other synths? If so, I can see why having a dedicated iOS version might not be that exciting.

  • I fear that any iOS version would never do the real thing justice. U-He's Repro-5 on desktop comes about as close as you'll come to the real thing, virtually. That thing is a CPU monster though, so I doubt any of the current gen iOS devices could handle it.

Having patch memory was big at the time but it also had a unique sound. Tons of people used them. Why there’s no iOS version is a mystery...

  • any synth in the right hands...

  • By coincidence (from today's new Beathawk pack....):

  • There was an emulation called „professor“ but it did not stay very long on the app store for whatever reason

    🤣🤣🤣🤣

  • Because U-he still makes no iOS apps. I hope they consider it in the future.
But before i would love 1 or 2 other synths coming to iOS first.

Are you sure, i can run many instances on my old laptop so i think the pro iPads should handle it.

I'm sure it's possible. The NI Pro-53 was formerly accepted as a fairly good Prophet emulation and its CPU requirements were moderate.

  • Any recommendations on which apps might be best for recreating some classic 5 patches? Or any existing presets in particular apps that give the same vibe?

  • If TAL can rock a Juno 60 on IOS. I’m sure a Pro5 is possible.

  • any synth + fac chorus?

  • There’s some profit patches in KQ Dixie. Reverb.com also has the prophet six multi samples for free

  • I'd be more than happy with just a Pro-One.

Just came here to say this, even though the VS is a different beast than the 5. Too bad Retronyms inherited bad code from Arturia. Every time I think about buying an Arturia product, I stop and think about the fact that they are not very good at maintenance.

Arturia have also been credibly accused of being trademark thieves:

  • Yeah John. Totally agree.

Back in the 90's I owned a Yamaha SY series synth that inherited some of the features of the Prophet. It was my first Synth, and I totally loved it.

When I saw the iProphet, it was an insta-buy.

    It was also an insta-disappointment.

I found the joystick sadly disfunctional and although I managed to create a few pretty cool patches, overall it wasn't worth anywhere near the purchase price.

DRC can do some of the sci prophet 5/ pro one sounds. polyphonic, but also settings for monophonic and unison.

with regard to vintage synths, it’s mainly the distortion characteristics of the filter and the VCA that give them their sound. i’m being only a little reductive.

the sliders that DRC have for pre-gain, osc 1, osc 2, master, etc. all add their own amount of distortion ( subtle or otherwise ). i suspect there’s more, subtle amounts of distortion/imperfection, hidden in DRC. it sounds very analogue.

I have done two Prophet V sounds in Drambo and I've managed to get very close to the sound of the original hardware as listened to in YT videos.
It's a lot of work though, including a few oscillator and filter tricks, and far from "plug and play" ;)

    Zeeon

  • Zeeon or TAL with microtuning + fac chorus

  • @BCKeys Yes, good points!

Actually, any synth could approach a P5 preset. More or less.

The "more or less" is what makes the difference. Not a huge difference maybe but enough to spot the difference.

    I don't own OB-Xd because I already have Zeeon.
The Drambo approach was more like an experiment for me to learn more about what's possible with modules that aren't modeling any of the above.

if I recall correctly, the Prophet 5 was the first synth that offered hard sync of an oscillator pair. The synth lead sound on Talking Heads' Burning Down the House was a hard sync prophet patch running through a T-Wah
