  • I am using Piano Motifs to send MIDI to Audiolayer which runs in AUM, this works nice. However, I cannot find a velocity setting in Piano Motifs. It does not sound as max velocity for example.

Is there a way, in Piano Motifs or with some other app in AUM, to change the velocity of the MIDI signal coming from Piano Motifs? If I could even set all velocity to maximum or some other fixed setting of my choice, that would be already better.

It is a suite of midi utilities.
The midi curve utility is able to set a fixed velocity.

A new version of Piano Motifs is now available (v2.52.1). This version has the following new features:

    • Added new Tonic Arpeggio Accompaniment Style. When this accompaniment is selected a random arpeggio with notes relative to the tonic chord is generated producing an ostinato arpeggio.
    • Added a Tonic Arpeggio mode to the User Arpeggio Accompaniment Style.
    • Improved UI for easier and more intuitive control. A new Stop button stops playing the motif and goes to the Main Screen where you can change BPM, shift octaves, save the motif, share the motif and play the motif again. The Next button stops playing the motif and goes to the Start Screen where you can modify the Settings and generate a new motif.
    • Fine tuned algorithm for Chord Suspend Accompaniment Style to avoid dissonant chords.
    • Added new preset chord progressions for randomly generated motifs.
    • Fixed issue with UI element borders not having the correct color when changing from dark to light mode or viceversa.
    • Fixed issue when sometimes tapping on Settings Screen pickers would not bringing up the correct popover screens.
    • Fixed crash that could occur when locking and changing the number of bars.

You can use the Tonic Arpeggio mode in the User Arpeggio Accompaniment Style, to create your own ostinato arpeggios or bass lines. An example to try: Db Mixolydian, 4/4 time signature, I-VII-IV-I progression with the following user arpeggio ;) :

If you are enjoying Piano Motifs please consider leaving a review in the App Store.

    Enjoy!

@azul3D_Apps any chance you can extend the tempo beyond 150 bpm? I was just trying to create a melody alongside a 160 bpm track I’m working on. Thx!

@gusgranite, unfortunately the highest tempo I can offer right now is 150 bpm.

@cokomairena, it should be on the bottom right when you first start the app. After that it should be available every time you press the Next button.

    Done.

It is the least we can do for this dev who does so much to make his great app even better.

  • Piano Motifs is the present-tense version of Loopy Pro. There, it is "Will it do X? Yep." Here, it is "Would it be possible at all to do X? Yes, it's already in the menu."

I love this app. Huge respect for your ongoing effort, @azul3D_Apps .

    Ha Haaa! ;)

  • A new version of Piano Motifs is available (v2.53). This version has the following new features:

    • Added a chord mode to the Drone Accompaniment Style. In this mode a specified chord with a specified inversion will be played for the duration of the motif.
    • Added a clear button for all text input fields.
    • When an arrangement section is modified, added a * to the name to mark it as modified.
    • Fine tuned accompaniment rest algorithm for more variety.
    • Removed Save button in Library Audition mode.
    • Fixed issue where octave shifts in the Main Screen weren't being passed to the Arrangement Screen.
    • Fixed font issue in pickers when iPad was in portrait mode.
    • Fixed crash when loading a saved arrangement in the Arrangement Screen.

The Drone mode works better with instruments that have a constant sustain level like some synth pads, organs, bagpipes, etc.

    Enjoy!

I have created a new tutorial that shows how easy it is to generate a relaxing Ambient Piano piece with Piano Motifs. This tutorial uses Pure Piano and Roli Noise to play Piano Motifs generated music.
    Check it out!

  • Thank so much for the new tutorial, @azul3D_Apps!

You update your apps with cool new abilities so frequently that our ABF how-to video guys just don’t have the time to keep up!

You are truly worthy of the developer tips you receive. I just wish I had more to gift to you…

  • @azul3D_Apps I'm loving this app more and more as you keep extending what it can do. I think you mentioned turning it into an AU3 at some point - is that still on your radar?

  • Long time fan of Piano Motif. I’ve had a curious thing happen recently but I’m not sure what may have changed. One example, I just created a new song in E Lydian but nowhere in the melody is the A# note which is the defining characteristic note for E Lydian. The melody is really in E Major without this note. Not the end of the world but technically speaking the notes that define a mode need to be present or the melody is not really modal. This has happened randomly with other modes too. I’d love more options for chords based on 4ths to get the modern jazz modal sound.

    Thanks @monch1962,
Unfortunately with the current code base an AUv3 implementation is not possible. It would require a significant change in the way the app operates and is coded, so it isn't in the current plans. This might be something to explore in the future but if it is feasible it would be a long term project. I just don't want to create false expectations.

Hi @yowza, great to hear from you again!

Long time fan of Piano Motif.

I hear you. What could be happening here is that since the melody picks random notes (following some algorithms) and sometimes there aren't that many melody notes it just doesn't have a chance to pick the A# note. Hopefully the progressions do have either of the II,ivº,vii chords, which will have an A#. Maybe I can fine tune the random algorithms to bias towards picking the notes that make the mode unique, but would need to be careful not to affect other functionality.

I’d love more options for chords based on 4ths to get the modern jazz modal sound.

Let me see if I can add some settings where you can pick 7th and add9 for the chords in a randomly generated progression.

    Cheers!

All good - thanks for the response. Just mark me down as ready to beta test it if you ever do :)

  • I have created a new tutorial that focuses on some of the features of the Arrangement functionality in Piano Motifs.

    Check it out!

  • Great tutorial, appreciated that you put them out! I see the arrangement capabilities are quite good now.

  • A new version of Piano Motifs (2.54.1) is now available. This version has the following new features:

    • Added new Slow Arpeggio Accompaniment Style. This accompaniment will produce a random arpeggio with quarter and half notes. When selecting this accompaniment you can determine if you want to have rest bars (even or odd bars) or not.
    • Fixed crash that occurred for motifs with bass or drone accompaniments that were being used on an arrangement and a third track was being generated (when exporting to MIDI or when using MIDI Out)
    • Fixed crash that could occur when using more than 2 silent bards in a chord progression.

    Happy Holidays!

  • Happy Holidays to you, too @azul3D_Apps ! You have created a very special app. 👍

  • @azul3D_Apps add me to the AUv3 requestors list as well. A MIDI-only version along the lines of Fugue Machine, Riffer, or Poly 2 would allow me to use multiple Piano Motifs instances in AUM or apeMatrix, and have the entire configuration saved in a AUM or apeMatrix preset that I can easily instantiate later.

  • Many thanks for the tutorials, it's appreciated

  • Zen, a Piano Motifs user was interested in using PM with Loopy Pro as a Host and he shared with me how to do it (a little different than in AUM).

    1. Pick the instrument you want to play PM on by pressing + and picking Add Audio Unit Input. The instrument gets added to the mixer.
    2. Press on the AU, select the gear ⚙️ icon and then select MIDI Sources.
    3. Press Add MIDI Source and select Virtual MIDI In.
      That is the setup.

Two issues with Loopy Pro (LP):
    1. LP only plays when it is on the foreground unlike AUM.
    2. LP reloads the AUs when moving it to the foreground and some AUs reload slower than others (Pure Piano loads slowly).

A solution to this issue is to use the Play Delay on PM (let’s say 10 secs) so you have time to switch apps and for LP to reload the AU. After that you should be ready to record a PM loop.

  • Im sorry if this has been asked.. could not find anything on it. Will this ever be able to run on the latest M1 MacBook Air??? Love this app so much !!!!
