There was an update of Piano Motifs (v4.83) that introduced a bug that could cause a crash when loading saved Host sessions (AUv3) or loading motifs in the Arrangement Screen, so there is a new version (v4.84) to fix these issues.
A new version of Piano Motifs (v4.85) is now available. This new version is full of goodies:
• Added a Voice Leading option for the Arpeggio Sequence Accomp Style. Specify the first bar arpeggio sequence and the app will create a Voice Leading arpeggio for the subsequent bars.
• Added tonic note options (1T, 3T, 5T) for individual steps of the Arpeggio Sequence Accomp Style.
• Added a randomize button (dice icon) for the Melody Sequence Setting.
• Added new options for the Pedal Point Accomp Style.
• Added a Smart option for the Accomp Last Bar Setting. When this option is selected the app will determine if it should use a Chord or a Bass note on the last bar of the motif depending on the Accompaniment.
• You can now control the Ascending/Descending Melody Constraint octave span by specifying it using the Octaves Min-Max setting. Before, this setting was overriden.
• Improved the melody generation algorithm for more variety.
• Added an Audition button in the Program Chord Progressions Screen, so you can listen to the different chords without adding them to the progression.
• Fixed bug when using the User Defined Melody Constraint with the Chord option selected. The wrong notes were being generated.
• Fixed crash that sometimes occurred when using Append Mode.
• Fixed crash that sometimes occurred when using the Note Sustain Mult Bar Accomp Style.
• Fixed crash that would happen if the last bar is defined as a silent bar and the Accomp Last Bar was being set to Chord or Bass.
• Fixed issue when using the Note Sustain Mult Bar Accomp Style with number of bars > 16, where the last bar notes would have durations that would go beyond the motif duration.
• Minor bug fixes and UI improvements.
It took some time to release this new version because I needed to comply with Apple's new European Union (EU) Digital Services Act (DSA) requirements. My priority was ensuring that customers in the EU could continue receiving updates. These new requirements have introduced recurring costs, and I hope to recover them over time.
If you like Piano Motifs and the music it generates, please consider leaving a review in the App Store, it helps a lot.

There seems to be an issue with this latest release which causes accompaniments not to work. Please refrain from updating. Sorry about the inconvenience. I will be releasing a fix shortly.
A new version (v4.86) fixes this issue and is available for download.
I really love this app and thx for updating and fast fixing 🤩
Thanks, glad to hear you're enjoying the app! ✌️
Your latest YT perfomance "Electronic Chill" is great and probably my favorite ever, @azul3D_Apps. Thank you.
Could you provide some details how you did it, please? I'm not sure which notes and chords/"licks" I hear directly from the and what is played by e.g. Synthmaster's arpeggiators.
Hi @filo01, great to hear you liked that track. You can find the main motif for the track here:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1rCBZrA15XWMlKahle2KfhzM6M1ATvCNY/view?usp=share_link
This motif was generated randomly, there was no setup of any Settings. There are 2 motifs in this track. The main motif and a second motif that was generated in Append Mode locking the Chord Progression.
I have created a motif that approximates the chord progression and the melody rhythm of the track. Here's a link:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1lhQPeL7DeqvoZDKchooqA2kajBcIwqtF/view?usp=share_link
The effect used on the Melody played by one of the instances of SynthMaster is Bleass Delay using the default preset. This contributes greatly to the feel of the track. The sound preset is PLK Fat Chords. The Accompaniment is played by DRC with the Harpa preset. The 3rd track is played by another instance of SynthMaster One with the Warm Pad preset.
Hope this helps.
You bet, thank you!
Hey, I have bought this app yesterday. One question: is it possible to import midi progressions or create different progressions which are outside of a scale. I am into neosoul, modern jazz, black music... whatever you wanna call it... and although these PM progressions sounds nice they are a bit too cliché and bland for my taste.... missing the bite....
thanks!
Hi @Basscleff, thanks for purchasing Piano Motifs. You can program your own chord progressions by going to More Settings and pressing New on Program Chord Progression. For chords out of the scale you can select either the Secondary Dominant Chords, the Parallel Scale Chords, or the Alternate Scale Chords.
If you want to spice things up a little bit with chord variations you could also use the Chord & Bass Accomp Style using the Rand option, which will randomly choose a sus2,sus4,7th,add9,add11,add13 chord or a bass note for beats of the bar. For more control you can go to the Accomp Seq Accomp Style and set these variations yourself. Another accompaniment that is less conventional is the Serendipity w/ Bass Accomp Style where Bass Notes, Dyads , Triads and extended chords are generated randomly.
To spice things up in the Melody you can choose the Chromatic Melody Constraint which will generate scale and out of scale notes. For variations in Melody rhythm you can select Swing, Triplets, or 16th notes. You can also add Harmony to Melody notes.
I know that manuals aren’t everybody’s cup of tea, but if you’re inclined you can check the very comprehensive manual (under Help) for other Settings you might find useful.
Hope this helps.
Very kind thing to do and spend time with explaining. I will use this tutorial right now just cause it sounds like a good experiment at minimum!
Thanks @azul3D_Apps for your effort and tips, I will check the manual and give it a try! All the best!
A new version of Piano Motifs (v4.87) is now available. What’s new in this version:
• Added add11 and add13 as chord options in the Program Chord Progression Screen.
• Minimum BPM goes down now to 1 BPM (AUv3 MIDI Plug-In Only).
• Improved Melody Rest Algorithm.
Enjoy!
1 bpm! That could be interesting.
Piano Motifs sounds great playing Iconica Sketch:
Great orchestral sounds @LFS !
@azul3D_Apps WOW! That sounds amazing!! I dont suppose you'd be able to share that session?
@soundtemple thanks! Sure, here is a link:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1hSnY96tXzS1m8XM8jyHcrtKjOp1v2lOA/view?usp=share_link
Apps used: Piano Motifs, Iconica Sketch, Virsyn Barkfilter.
Piano Motifs Settings:
1. MIDI - Multi Channel Accompaniment and Melody Harmony going to a separate MIDI channel
2. Programmed Chord Progression: Dm-Bb-F-G x2
3. Accomp Style: Arpeggio w/Bass
4. Melody Constraint: Chord Triad
5. 3rd Track: Multi Bar Sustain On
6. Randomize Velocity On +/- 10
7. Melody Seq 0 & 1 On
8. Melody Harmony: Octave 100%
Edit:
Also, check the different articulations used for the Iconica instruments and the transpose settings in AUM (which is used to change the octaves of the input MIDI notes)
Enjoy!
For different results, you could let the Chord Progression be random and turn off the Melody Sequence so it is also random. You just need to make sure you adjust the Octave Shifts which might not be at the right range for the instrument being played.
Here an example with a different Chord Progression in Emin (Em-C-G-D) and Melody Sequence Off:
And here an example with a random Chord Progression and Melody Sequence Off, no Timpani instrument.
@azul3D_Apps Thank you so much!
My Dad is a French horn player who likes to do the odd bit of composition in Sibelius. He is going to love this!!
☺️👍
I have created a beginner’s tutorial on how to get started using Piano Motifs as an AUv3 MIDI Plug-In :
While most of it covers the basics and may not be particularly useful for experienced Piano Motifs users, it does include a few tips and explanations that might come in handy.
Nice!
A new version of Piano Motifs (v4.88) is now available. What's new in this version:
• Added the ability to specify loop count in the Melody Sequence Setting.
• Added more variety to Chord & Bass Accomp Style, Syncopated option.
• Minor fixes and improvements.
With the new Melody Seq setting you can get more creative with melody rhythm patterns. Try it out!
Here is an example of how it can be used. The first Melody Sequence is repeated 3 times and then the second one once.
🙏✌️
There’s a new Piano Motifs tutorial available. This tutorial dives a little deeper into one portion of the settings, the General Settings.

@azul3D_Apps I've been out of the loop for a while so I'm just catching up with all the new PM stuff, including the tutorials (which are uniformly excellent!). One thing that occurred to me today as I was playing with the walking bass accomp style: it would be cool if you could set it to add chromatic notes as you can with the chromatic melody constraint. If I was being greedy, I'd also ask for some ascending/descending controls, as well. Just a thought!
Hi @lukesleepwalker, glad to hear you liked the tutorials. Currently, you will sometimes get chromatic notes in the Walking Bass Accomp Style. I will see if I can add an option where some chromatic notes are used. Also, the Walking Bass is just a typical bassline that goes up on one bar and down on the next one. Are you suggesting a bassline that just keeps going up/down or just ascends/descends on one bar and then restarts?
At this rate, PM will essentially have so many controls and options it will be faster to just write the music by hand! 😂
Now it just needs a drummer!
