A new version of Piano Motifs (v4.73) is now available. What’s new in this version:

    • Added a Walking Bass Accomp Style option.
    • Added a Loop option for Arrangement sections. In the Arrange Screen you can now define a loop count for a section.
    • Minor bug fixes and improvements.

Try the new Walking Bass Accomp Style with a 12 bar blues progression and the Chromatic Melody Constraint. Here’s an example:

    Enjoy!

@azul3D_Apps hello, i’m trying to figure out… can piano motifs do open voicing for the chords when programming in the chord progression?

Or maybe that does not even make sense? (I’m a music theory noob)

I’m trying to input this chord progression into piano motifs:

    Time: 0.00, Chord: F1 A2 C3 F3
    Time: 2.00, Chord: C1 G2 C3 E3
    Time: 4.00, Chord: A1 A2 C3 E3
    Time: 6.00, Chord: G1 G2 B2 D3
    Time: 8.00, Chord: F1 A2 C3 F3
    Time: 10.00, Chord: C1 G2 C3 E3
    Time: 12.00, Chord: E1 G2 B2 E3
    Time: 14.00, Chord: F1 A2 C3 F3

Hi @Nimgwen. No, Piano Motifs doesn't do open voicing for chords. This seems to be a very specific voicing for a chord progression. My suggestion would be to enter these on a sequencer like Helium or Atom. Then, to obtain a melody that goes over these chords you could program Piano Motifs with the following progression in CMaj: F-F-C-C-Am-Am-G-G-F-F-C-C-Em-Em-F-F.

    Walking Bass!!!

    Insta-tip!!!

Can you add a feature that shows how much this app has cost in tip? No? More important features to add? Sure. I think I might be a Piano Motifs addict.

Yeah that’s kind of what I was thinking. Since the open voicing sounds more beautiful than the closed voicing that piano motifs does by default when you choose to add a chord sustain 3rd track, then I can just sequence open voicing chords in the piano roll, then program the closest similar chords available into piano motif to generate some nice melodies that go well alongside the progression.

Thanks for the advice, also thanks for making the best midi generator app ❤️

In all seriousness, developers don't have access to user information, so there's no way to discern.
Hopefully more features coming in the future.
One thing that helps (apart from tips, of course) are reviews in the App Store.

That brings new users that want new features ahead of my requested features like open voicings
and midi channel per note or part so I can spread the chords across a string section:
    bass violin
    cello
    violas
    violins 2
    violins 1

5 parts with voicing across 2+ octaves.

That would make exporting your chords progressions and solo voices into a Notation Program and pretending to be a great composer.

New users are always welcome, but I’m especially thankful and appreciative of long time users. I’ll listen to all requests: some might be feasible, some might not be, and some might be put on the fast track 😉. I’ll see what I can do about open voicing for chords. About different notes of the Accomp going to different MIDI channels, this functionality already exists when you export MIDI using the MIDI Multi Track option.

A new feature coming soon to Piano Motifs:

The score for the MIDI generated is at the end of the video. It is rendered by the MIDI Sheet Music app (nice free app).

A new version of Piano Motifs (v4.75) is now available. What’s new in this version:

    • Added an Open Voicing option for chord accompaniments.

Use it when you want a fuller and richer sound for your chords which will be spread across several octaves. The video in the post above shows an example of its use.

    Enjoy!

  • Slow down… You’ll run out of version numbers 😊

@Nimgwen ☺️, thanks for the inspiration. You can't set the exact voicings in your example, but it gets you closer I think.

  • Thanks for the reminder to send a tip, @McD. I'm not sure $5 even comes close to cover the joy I've gotten out of the recent releases.

  • Are open voicings the same as spread triads? For example instead of a close voiced C major triad of CEG, a spread triad would move the middle voice up an octave to CGE? Spread triads are really beautiful chord voicings.

I had another thought related to 3/4 vs 6/8 time signatures which are both already in PM. Since these time signatures share the same math of six 8th notes with 3/4 being a triple rhythm and 6/8 being a duple rhythm, would it be possible to combine these two rhythms to get the Hemiola rhythm, alternating between a measure of 3 then 2 or 2 then 3?

Hemiola is widely used in classical, Latin, Spanish, South American music styles.
I realize my previous request for odd time signatures might be above the scope of where PM currently is but since the Hemiola math is already there I thought it might be possible.
I really love PM so please take my suggestions in that spirit.

Hi @yowza, the Open Voicing is equivalent to the spread triads but going a little further and adding an extra root note. So for example, C major will be: CGEC and it will span 3 octaves (for example: C1 to C3)

About hemiola, you can actually get a horizontal hemiola melody (ala West Side Story's America) using the following 2 Melody Sequences:

    Here's a motif to try:

    I agree!

Hemiola is already there! This is great!

I repeat the request I recently made for you to post the various example motifs of new features that I’ve seen on Instagram (and elsewhere) so they are all in once place or even better include them as factory preset motifs with some explanation in the manual. I keep reading the manual but probably would not have necessarily figured this out on my own. It’s all about combining certain settings together and having presets would give users some great templates to start with or to reverse engineer for our own purposes.

    Thanks again!

I would love to try examples of motifs created by more talented people than me! An explanation as to how the motif was created would be the cherry on top of an already delicious cake 😁

  • Am I doing something wrong? I’ve created motifs and arrangements in the standalone version of PM but when I load PM as an AUv3 in AUM I don’t have any saved files visible. I can export a motif in standalone mode then when in AUM import it but PM unloads and when I reload PM the motif I imported isn’t there.
Sorry if the above sounds confused, it’s because I am!
