A new version of Piano Motifs (v4.67) is now available. What's new in this version:

    • Added a Randomize Button (Dice Icon) to the Arpeggio Seq Accomp Style.
    • Added an option to set the borders of the different sections of the Main Screen to be white.
    • Fixed issue when adding sections in the Arrange Screen from scratch. After adding the first section, if you tried to add another sections, there were no motifs available to add.

    Enjoy!

  • A new version of Piano Motifs ( v4.68) is now available. What’s new in this version:

    • New option to add melody grace notes to a motif. Use a slider to adjust the percentage of melody notes that will have a grace note. A grace note is a short note that is played before the melody note. The grace note will be one scale note above the melody note.

Please note that this is an AUv3 MIDI Plug-in option. Also, grace notes won’t be available when exporting MIDI.

    Try it out and enjoy!

  • Nice update… I made something using the Grace Note feature:

It’s been a while since I tipped so I went with the “Venti”.

@McD, thanks for your support! Nice track, the percussive sound that follows the melody is cool.

That’s Harry Goh’s Tera Pro “BrainZ” IAP synth with the Wooden Drum preset. Such a deep resonant drum model. There maybe other synths that can make that type of sound but it’s my go to for tuned drums. I think I dropped the bass notes that get cropped below C4 down another octave to make some cool bass from the depths of the dwarf mines and the Balrog of “Lord of the Rings”.

  • Is there a way to generate on the fly while the transport is running?

That would be amazing but probably extremely difficult to implement after all this development of the app.

Hi @gusgranite, unfortunately there's isn't a way to generate on the fly while the Host transport is running when in Sync mode. You can toggle to non-Sync mode (by clicking on the SYNC label by the BPM) and then you'll be able to generate without being in Sync with the Host tranport, but you'll loose synchronization with Host.

No problem. Thank you for letting me know.

And do I have the process right that you always have to click Next first as well? So it’s Stop transport > Next > Generate > Start transport?

    AUM needs macros 🙂

Love Piano Motifs. Spending a lot of time with it!

A new version of Piano Motifs (v4.71) is now available. What's new in this version:

    • Added a Randomize button (dice icon) to the Accomp Seq Accomp Style.
    • Added add11 and add13 chords as options for the Accomp Seq Accomp Style.
    • Improved the algorithm for the Chord & Bass (Rand option) Accomp Style for more variety.
    • Minor fixes and improvements.

Try the Chord & Bass (Rand option) Accomp Style, it creates some interesting motifs.

    Enjoy!

Missed this one @gusgranite. You are correct, when in Sync Mode the process is Stop Transport >Next>Generate>Start Transport. When in non-Sync mode no need to stop and start the transport.

Thanks. I’m getting pretty quick at it now!

  • I had no idea Piano Motifs could output more than 3 MIDI tracks… @azul3D_Apps slipped me an example file with 7 tracks! I imported it into StaffPad to assign parts to the music. I use Cut and Paste to
    flesh out the score.

    Nice @McD.

If anyone is interested, this is using the MIDI export option MIDI Multi-Track, available when you press the Export Button.

MIDI - Multi Track: One MIDI file with the melody, multiple tracks for the notes of the accompaniment, another track with a sustain chord per bar, and another track with the melody harmony if Melody Harmony is On in the Settings Screen.

  • A new version of Piano Motifs is now available (v4.72). What’s new in this version:
    • Improved Chromatic Melody Constraint generation algorithm.
    • Minor fixes and improvements

Here is an example of a motif using the Chromatic Melody Constraint:

Try it out! And remember, if you’re liking all of Piano Motifs’ new features and the music it generates, please consider leaving a review in the App Store.

  • Would it be possible to have a preset system, where we can save our favorite combinations of settings? Obviously opening up a previously saved song and changing it from there is almost the same thing.

    Just wondering.

    Thanks for a great app!

Hi @yowza, good to hear from you again. As you have noted, every time you save a motif the Settings are saved with it. When you Load a motif there is an option to only Load Settings, so like you said, this serves that purpose. Maybe I can add something to just save the Settings and not the motif, would that be what you're looking for? Or would it be to have a totally separate library for Settings and for Motifs?

Not sure it’s worth your time to put the work in for this. I have favorite settings I like to use together and have to remember which motif had those settings in it or have to dig around in the settings to remember the way it was set up, since my memory isn’t what it used to be. You have added so many things to the settings menu it’s hard to remember them all! A good problem to have!

You’ve shown some cool combinations of settings to demonstrate new features, it would be nice to have them as factory presets maybe with some explanation in the manual so people can see how the different combos of settings change things.

I’ve often wished the settings window would stay open but I think this been asked before and since you can’t change anything while the motif is playing, it’s not that big a deal.

It’s probably not worth your effort, just brainstorming. Thanks again!

A developer who is constantly improving his product is a joy but one can be lulled into missing substantial improvements by the frequency of updates. For what I do, the new chromatic melody algo is sublime when mixed with some grace notes or some sixteenth notes. I also turn up the velocity variation! Simply wonderful results, Fernando.

  • One other feature I’ve always wanted in PM is odd time signatures like 5/8, 5/4, 7/8, 7/4, 9/4 and 9/8 (any of those would be incredible). I couldn’t remember if this has been requested before so wanted to mention while I was thinking about it.

I'll see what I can do about separating Settings from Motifs. That way you could just save/load either Settings or Motifs with Settings.

@lukesleepwalker, it is a great validation of the development direction when I hear that you're using all of the latest features ( chromatic melody, grace notes, sixteenth notes, velocity variation) in your work. Great to hear you're getting wonderful results!
