    Quick history.
For anybody who doesn't know OTT = Over The Top.

First it was a preset in the Ableton multiband compressor, this is the original,
    it defined the name/term OTT

I’m pretty sure it didn’t. OTT as an abbreviation of Over The Top was in common use in the early 80s and the full expression probably originated in trench warfare in the Great War.

    https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0083459/

This was just a joke, right?
Or you really could not tell from my post, in a music forum, about a musical plugin, that I was talking specifically in the context of musical plugins, used to make music?
I have obviously edited my original post, just in case you were not joking, which I doubt.

Thank you for removing the abiguity. We have all sorts here, I’m sure the extra clarity will benefit at least a few of them.

There's a big difference between outright brick wall loudness and multi-band levelling fidelity. Like any tool - you can use it well, or you can use it badly.

YMMV - but you'll get the most out of this plugin if you make EDM and D&B styles. However, I've also heard this type of effect is very popular with fans of binaural/field recording.

i do ambient stuff with lots of movement / modulation , im hoping this can offer something for me because it’s bram! and it sounds like it’s really rad, i’ve never used ott however so i’m not entirely sure

If it has movement or timbre changes, it will lend itself to being transformed using woott. It also tends to do interesting things with delays and reverb tails. Whether those are good things is subjective ofcourse :D

Keep in mind that you shouldn’t try to automate woott itself, but what goes into it :)

haha yes very subjective i imagine! sounds like there is def a time and place to wooot in my music then 😎

One of the many reasons why I prefer to use an expander to normalize very quiet sounds, first zero everything below a certain threshold (ie. noise) and then expand (ie. 'stretch') the rest to near 0db and keep the other lower end closer to infinity. (ie. for example make a quiet mouse-click into a ear perching gunshot especially when pitched down a bit).

A very good addition to the arsenal this will be :)

I intend to launch tomorrow. So you can stop refreshing the App Store for now :)

Also, you should be able to put it on everything you like as it's really low on resources: I just tried WOOTT in AUM on top of a Ruismaker Noir loop on my slow iPod Touch (which is somewhere between a 5S and a 6 in terms of performance) and I could run 15 instances (!) before it started crackling :D

Drambo wasn't coming soon. This one is ;)

    Everybody’s gonna be coming soon.

You could certainly do stuff like this, but keep in mind that this is not technically an expander. Expanders increase the dynamic range, this compresses it. Upwards compression sounds confusingly similar to upwards expansion but the difference is quite important: expansion makes loud peaks louder, upwards compression makes quiet bits louder instead, bringing them closer in volume to the loudest peaks.

So you have 4 types of dynamics processing: upwards compression, downwards compression, upwards expansion and downwards expansion. Woott does the first two kinds.

The guys at Izotope wrote one of the best articles about all these flavors:

    https://www.izotope.com/en/learn/expanding-on-compression-3-overlooked-techniques-for-improving-dynamic-range.html

Super interesting read, even if you're not into [WO]OTT per se :)

Got it, so in practice this can be used to lift up the background noises while and keep the existing peaks the same or squashing them down. In short to 'dig up the dirt', hey, I can hear quiet fan or clock ticking in the background, lets lift'em up a bit just as an example. I guess some kind of ear-protection would be advised when tweaking around with this :)

Exactly! That's why this/OTT is good at bringing up details in sounds that normally can't compete with the loud aspects of the sound. It won't create sounds that aren't there already, but puts the spotlights on the nearly inaudible details and movements you would otherwise miss (which may also include blemishes in the sound that are less desirable in some cases ;) ).

One of the reasons I like to use an expander to do cleanup is that I can make the unwanted things 'zeroes' meaning there is no way to dig the data back when starting to add gain to stuff that was above the threshold. It's one of the reasons I love to use Apples AUDynamicsProcessor to do 'cleanup', everything below a certain threshold gets zeroed...

For experimental stuff this thing is a very welcome addition for sure!

  • I watched the demo and read the manual. It looks bloody brilliant and so I look forward to purchasing it instantly upon release.

  • What sort of different things will be coming through the multi outs?

It outputs the (processed) bands so you can put other effects on. There’s a preset which has most of the processing dialed down so you basically get a band-splitter.

Obviously FAC bandit is a lot more sophisticated for such things, but it was a basic feature I could easily integrate in my architecture for some extra creative versatility.

  • I’ve been veering towards the pastoral recently, gentle wobbly Mellotron flutes and bongos, whispering guitars and new age chunter and wool. I’ll still get this obviously, for when I’m back in standard noise monster mode.

Oh god yeah. In fact she's actually singing about someone (probably you), sneaking around my orchard in the middle of the night gathering cobs - or even hoping to encounter an owl!

Thanks for the clarification. We were taught that it caused WWI in history class. Shoddy US public education system strikes again! 🙄

Nah.. WW1 was fought over the 440Hz vs 432Hz debate.

If only Archduke Ferdinand hadn't been so outspoken about 432Hz...

I like "Bovverator" best still. It reminds me of something 'in yer face', and that is exactly what Bram's app seems to do. But let's think about it before we add it to the next edition of the Oxford English Dictionary ;)

like ‘Bovver’ boots of old,, time for Bram to get a No.1 Skin Head and Susie Dent to suggest ‘Ripplemaker’ to the Thesaurus Witches!

  • Bovverator would certainly be a good preset name for this app. Which I will of course buy, seeing as I treat brambos apps as a panini sticker album and I definitely don’t want a blank page.
