What ?
I think there is some confusion about what @Samu and @Turntablist are discussing here.
Turntablist's idea is that the audio editor saves a new version of the audio after editing in a shared folder (via Files.app?) and then the user is responsible for manually reloading it back into the AUv3 instance of segments.
Samu is thinking about a single round-trip (aka 'live') sample edit and return to the AUv3 instance - which (as he rightly points out) is clearly not possible due to the way 'open-in' works. This is similar to what happens when you edit a placed Adobe Illustrator file inside a Photoshop document.
Either of you please correct me if I'm wrong.
Roundtrip transmission of files like that is unheard of from developer to developer on any platform, not just iOS, I doubt you will get developers to sign up to a universal bridge ala Adobe any time soon, so no idea why it would even be mentioned ?
Actually brainfart, it isn't unheard of, QNX, the operating system that should have become the new Amiga OS many moons ago had universal file bridging in realtime, built directly in to the OS, but my point still stands really LOL.
I think I’d better add some trim functionality here 😬
Now keep calm and take a look at some timestretch runs
Bingo, I I know 'in place' editing can be done if the files are stored on iCloud...
(Might work for local files too but I have no apps that use this feature yet, in place editing of photos is already possible)
...iCloud even notifies the apps when the files have changed so the apps using the files can refresh the content...
If we take the Apples Voice Memo app as an example. I can record a sound on my iPhone and while the file is open on the iPhone I can open it on the Mac and then when I do edits the document on the iPhone 'updates' when I close the file on the Mac.
Some changes are coming to file-management for iPadOS14, that's pretty certain...
It doesnt need trim or any other hard edit, just add open in, done, everything covered.
From WWDC'19 'Open In Place' (Still very view apps have implemented it and it's already WWDC'20 by Monday).
https://developer.apple.com/document-based-apps/
So this will likely take time as the adoption of the document picker and share sheet has take, a few years or so
This sounds like re-pitch, not time stretching...
One of the windows has warp enabled
I wish I could hear that window 😅
Listen to 'nosy' sound after warp is enabled...
In general I think a good rule of thumb is if it can record, it should trim... (but I haven’t followed the thread of thoughts leading up to this heh
).
DOPE!
Yah I think it demos the two methods well.
hats and hair off to you for that (trim)
would be nice to hear the warp acting on something more melodic without another sample on top masking it.. but even if it is fairly rudimentary ‘old school’ artifacty sounding stretch it will still be a great thing to have ... possibly even a bonus for the ‘lo-fi’ school of sampling school.
Gorsh I wonder how many instances of this I can run in NS2 on my Pro 10.5
i’ll be happy with 8 , one for each finger... the thumbs I’m saving for wiping my sniffly emotional nose.
It can get pretty intense if you enable all the effects on all 16 slices.
Without too many of those effects active at once 8 instances on an iPad Air 2 went quite well, at least in AUM...
Hmm, well that is good to hear. Typically a lot of my fx are baked in.
@Samu @ElliottGarage In AU FX mode, does sEGments work with a live audio stream (like FRMS for example, which has an input buffer or 1/8, 1/4, 1/2, 1 or 2 bars) or does "RECORD" have to be triggered to fill the audio buffer?
i think that’s ( for some ) part of the joy of sampling , the ‘found’ sounds already have an ambience and atmosphere from their original ‘mixdown’ .. the trick is making sure all those ‘borrowed’ ambiences don’t clash ..
Organ Transplants Vol1 is a good example of this... no additional FX whatsoever. all the STEREOPHONIC beauty of those ancient records is preserved.
Is Gadget’s Stockholm still the only Rex player in town and could this be a future add-on?
For now it's manual triggering. I have suggested host-sync to start & stop recording.
I do most of the recording in AUM as its start & stop is synced so there is less need to trim afterwards...
I hope @ElliottGarage is looking at this suggestion. The ability to record into sEGments is a killer feature. Refining that feature to make it easy to grab a certain number of bars from the host would be over-the-top great! I spend so much time recording in AUM, then trimming in AudioShare, then enhancing in auditor, then re-importing to AUM. Make it magically easy please!
BM3 does this well and I still go back to BM3 to do this sort of thing even though AUM is home base these days.
Yah it has always been easier for me to address this on desktop with more surgical tools. BM3 helps a lot but now with the Fab Filter crew I feel I can do even more ‘baked audio’ hack and slash on the fly much better now and not have as much of the dreaded ‘fix it post?’ coin flip.
Thanks - that’s useful to know.
On iOS: Yes.
Propellerheads would have to release their "Rex shared library" for iOS which is unlikely.
But there's a desktop utility that will convert REX/RX2 files to compressed Apple loops including slice information: Audiofile Engineering Loop Editor.
As far as I remember, there's also the Apple Loops utility that does it.
You could use it to convert your REX to an even smaller compressed format well-suitable for iOS and have a huge sliced loop library on your iDevice.
I love Stockholm and I'm still using Gadget a lot but it would be great if I could use my loops in NS2 or other DAWs as well, even if it's not as powerful as Stockholm.
@ElliottGarage has offered to look into it and I've sent him an example loop, so let's see how it goes 😊
Unfortunately, not working since High Sierra
@rs2000 I cannot find any useful info on all the web...in the apple CAF specs I found there's chunk called 'marker', but it's empty for your file and other CAF loops I have on my computer. The whole Apple loops thing seems like some forgotten feature...also adding AIff loops support was a nightmare but finally I got to work it out
