Probably not that unpopular but Jim Morrison was talentless. Although the rest of the band is pretty awesome

Not afterwards, though. Manzarek solo albums are dire.

I’m convinced that the Doors would have been decent had Manzarek’s contribution been greatly reduced. There are a lot of Doors songs that sound like circus music.

I find Pink Floyd largely boring and David Gilmour’s “tone” to be a real snooze.

The Eagles made no good songs.

Unpopular opinions: most musicians who hate good hit songs do so because they can't write songs that good. ;)

    Unpopular opinion 1:
using capitalist valuations as to what is "good" (a system based on throwing whatever garbage at the wall and going with the lowest common denominator that leads to the most money for the people at the top who run the industry) leads to a hollow sense of "goodness".

    Unpopular opinion 2:
there is no such thing as good and bad, only better and worse. Even those qualifiers are entirely subjective.

    Unpopular opinion 3:
The rolling stones are 250% worse than all brilliant music they ripped off.

I think unpopular opinion 3 needs more clarification:
    Would that be:
    A) early enthusiastic, but not very inspired combo Rolling Stones?
    B) untouchable and in their prime 68-73 Rolling Stones?
    C) World’s biggest oldies act Rolling Stones?

I hate it all. I used to like their early stuff when I was a kid, then I heard howlin' wolf and lightning hopkins and I never looked back at the pale imitation.

I especially find category B to be the most insufferable.

I Got The Blues: Best love song really about drugs.
Moonlight Mile: Best drug song really about love.

The correct answer to the question "Beatles or Stones?" is "Incredible String Band".

    They are wretched.
The only song I give a pass is the instrumental The Moorish Idol. That’s only because it was used as the intro music to a local television program that showed classic silent films. It’s where I first saw Vidor, Griffith, Murnau, Pabst, and all the gang.

    Truth

  • Weird Al covers are better than the originals.

  • @JeffChasteen
Joe Strummer would have probably agreed with you.

    Indeed.
I vastly prefer Ray’s left hand to his right hand. Except for when he was playing piano instead of that Vox. He did do some lovely piano work.

  • Ted Nugent is an asshat with a low-rent one dimensional shtick, but he was a genius at using guitar feedback.

ABBA were a better pop act than the Beatles. 😛 (and I say this as a Beatles fan).

Neil Diamond was one of the best songwriters of the 60s.

Diamond was also about a decade ahead of the “pop artists discover world music curve” with his album Tap Root Document.

Phil Spector was a genius and his Wall of Sound sound is still totally impressive and although the Beach Boys tried to copy it and nearly succeeded it still isn't the real Wall of Sound.

    1. Radiohead are one of my favorite bands ever, but they sucked before OK Computer (Street Spirit not withstanding). High & Dry and Fake Plastic Trees are pure yuck.
    2. (Re: Spacemen 3) Sonic Boom is waaaaaaaay better than Jason Spaceman; the closest Jason ever came was a tie between Lazer Guided Melodies and Soul Kiss.
    3. Bo Diddley was better than Chuck Berry and BB King put together
    4. It’s cooler that Kevin Shields played it the Guvnor pedal that inspired Nembrini’s The Boss than Gary Moore playing it.
    5. Love was infinitely better than The Byrds or the Doors.
    6. Pedal distortion sounds better than amp distortion.

    All of the above

  • Well, I don’t know why, I don’t need to analyse it either, but since last Friday I’ve been listening to a lot of Electric Light Orchestra. They did some pretty good stuff (and some crap, and some ill-advised poorly researched efforts, but mostly good stuff).

  • ELO?!?!?!

Well, I imagine the Muzak versions are ALMOST tolerable... 🙄

  • Everyone in the "Rock and Roll" Hall of Fame totally deserves to be there.

Indeed. Who could listen to Be My Baby or River Deep, Mountain High without being totally blown away... or The Righteous Brothers... but then...

  • When I think Rock and Roll Hall of Fame,

I instantly think Abba & Donna Summer! 🤗
