Sure many of us are long time guitarists who idolize one-amp-one-guitar gods that just let it rip, played in bands, recorded albums, etc... But I think the difference is that, in our case, we are also dabbling in home studios and recording, and with that comes the feeling of acting like a “recording engineer” which brings with it lots of obsessing over tone and not as much joyful playing. We could all use more fun and less tinkering, but the sound design and searching for tone also has its reward. That’s how I feel about it anyway, that I’ve developed a desire to hone my recording and engineering skills rather than just shred in my free time. If none of this existed and I was simply playing guitar in band, then I would have my half stack, my one axe, 4-5 pedals on a board, just let it rip, and some other dude would be obsessing over recording me.
As for cloning famous guitar tones, as others have said, it should serve as a learning tool and reference point for something else. Actually trying to recreate famous tones to play with seems a waste of time and unoriginal, unless you’re in a cover band. Anyway even if I could play like Jimi, I could never ever sound like him unless I had a reverse headstock Strat and his weird string gauge as a starting point. Or his picks. Or his actual amp. Where does it stop? I like to find a texture in someone’s tone that I love and try to find it in my own tones, instead of copying someone spec for spec.
I for one am proud to be a small part of your Stratofication!
That’s quite the collection, my man!
I really need to do some research on how to bid for Goodwill guitars. You have definitely struck gold with your finds!
I'm not sure what you mean... are you talking about the wall and the lack of drywall?
I'm sure you'll get around to that once you finish nurturing those lovely strats.
I read that 1 out of 5 exposed to Covid exhibits signs of mental illness. How do you feel?
I hope you can finish the guitars before they take you to the hospital.
That is a beautiful pile! Love the natural finished one, what brand is that? And what is the hollow body? I'm into the hollows lately.
New build up today, 3 new rig libraries, fixed master volume.
Got the new Vox from Choptones and like it much better than the first
$19 for the desktop version and a dollar for the iOS version. This is the first time I took it vantage of one of those deals and it was simple
What are the new rigs? They just came out with 3 last week are there 3 more? It's hard to figure out which ones are new.. I bought the gas herbi and the vox hw and I really like the vox.
Yeah, I’m really liking the Vox HW a lot. A lot
The 3 new ones are ChopTones Rigs using 3 boutique amps:
Laney
Mesa Boogie
Friedman
Ty @mcd. I thought for a second I was going to have to buy another rig. Although that bogie dc sounds really nice.
The natural one is just a cheap Stagg strat copy that I got at goodwill for $50, but it’s in mint condition and there’s potential. Always replace the plastic nut with a tusq and file it to gauge. The fret bottoms need to be sanded down. And it definitely needs new pickups, the stock ones are horrible. Maybe new tuners. That plus a setup and adjustment will make this $50 dud easily a $200 stud, because the body and neck are fine. The hollow body is a Godin 5th Ave kingpin with a p90. Great guitar that was a free gift from a friend, the floating bridge was misaligned so it simply needed a setup. All my projects are getting new tusq nuts, reamed peg holes to fit hipshot tuners, new saddles and trem blocks in some cases. As long as the body and neck are good there’s so much potential.
Here’s one I was working on last week...
This was a brand new SX Hawk Strat copy I got for $80. I got a Callaham stainless steel bridge, saddles, trem block, claw, the whole deal. Had to dremel out the bridge cavity on one side to fit the massive trem block. I got a Mojotone Quiet Coil ‘58 prewired pickguard, but the control switch was too deep for the 1 5/8 body. So In the body I had to hog out some depth just for the switch, only leaving 3mm before it would puncture the back. the neck pocket was too wide for the pickguard, so I had to dremel it down and then finish carving pickguard with an exacto knife. Some new holes for the pickguard. Soldered a ground wire to the new trem claw. Reamed out peg holes and installed hipshot locking tuners, Replaced and filed the nut. This thing weighs a TON now. I can’t wait to string it up and set it up.
The hardwired Voc was in the previous group of three
I think it's my favorite so far. Been playing my new DAngelico hollow body thru it and it's really nice.
I agree. Like many here, I am learning a lot about amps. This new Vox one is superb and has some Keith Richards tones (dryish and twangy) and Brian May tones – – with several in between. Amp sounds great and presets are great
It's a really nice combo, love the blue and the tortoise together. Its gonna sound sweet too I'm sure.
TONE RANT:
It's the age old topic. Miles Davis famously said, "I've practiced on my tone for almost ... 50 years, and if I can't hear my tone, I can't play. If I can't play, then I won't get paid. If I don't get paid, then I'll lose the house, you know? It's like a chain reaction. If I lose my tone, I can't f**k, can't make love, can't do nothin'. I'll just walk into the ocean and die, if I lose my tone."
To me the "tone" he talks about is both sound production and the final musical product -- I suppose they're very similar but one is "my sound" and one is "our sound" i.e the group.
What do I need to "teach" my mind and body and gear in order to get a sound that inspires me and that I can accept -- maybe even love? I think all musicians obsess over the sound product to varying extents and at various stages of the musical chain of execution. But, when you realize that your "tone quest" has just become a scientific study of sorts and you haven't actually made music...well, that's a conundrum!
But each to their own...playing with gear is fun and playing music is fun -- just depends on your priorities, desired outcome and available time.
Overloud has launched their Black Friday deals.
Looks like only 30% or less off.
Disappointing.

Just bought the bass rig library on their website for $29, regularly 49. Then I purchased the iOS version for $.99
Let me know how you like it, (with my P-Bass) I think it’s phenomenal! Two of my favorite presets are “Jacob” (#40) and “Long Solo” (#22).
So what’s the price of the full pack? And the different bundles? I can’t see the discounts since I have the full. I don’t see any IAP discounts on the rigs, hoping that will change.
Glass 30% empty kind of guy?
$79.99 for TH-U Full.
Not quite sure, but it looks like individual amps and effects aren't on sale at all — just the bundles
Individual amps, cabs and effects are all $4.99.
I Agree very disappointing I will pass this time because I have a lot more amps and effects and there are a lot more things that I want to purchase.
Well, when they are taking up to 80% off desktop stuff, I have a lil problem with that. Most amp sim deals on iOS are 50%.
Yes that’s full price. Makes sense that only bundles are on sale, but they could totally reel in a few $10 buys if the ala carte was a few bucks off.
I'm sure the significant sales will come eventually. Overloud has big sales year-round on desktop, so perhaps they'll give us an iOS Christmas or New Year's gift.
Should be plenty of reasons to celebrate the end of 2020...
In the App Store description, under In App Purchases, it shows a few 99 cents options. Umm where are these in the app?
I get where you’re coming from, but in reality I wouldn’t possibly have expected less than $80 for the full pack. That was my prognosis months ago and I think it’s a total steal. Granted it doesn’t reflect what they announced for desktop. I would consider the market, the amplitube full is almost double the price at $149, and it comes with less components but perhaps more app features, though still only IAA. And Bias has fallen so far below quality wise, they’re basically giving away their full package for $50, though recently stability has improved slightly, it’s still IAA only.
Based on the market of guitar rig apps, I would urge anyone to scoop up the full pack for $80, especially with the remastered cabs. That’s above many people’s budgets understandably, so I would still consider discounted all fx bundles or Funk bundle. In truth, none of us need so many components, it can just be too much. That doesn’t change the massive value for me in the $80 full pack.
I’m hoping the rigs go on sale, I have my eyes on 3 more, but if they don’t I’m happy with what I already have.
The 99 cent rigs are priced that way for people who already own the same rig on desktop.
