Just bought the app, looking forward to diving in and learning how to use it. Thanks to Tony for his hard work (and thanks in advance for working on AB support in v. 1.6 later!).

UPDATE: Had a few minutes to play around with it, and while there is a learning curve, I had everything WORKING very quickly. Very nice interface, and certainly worth the current price (as well as the higher price if this is something you will use). However, I do want to review a manual of some kind because I'm not fluent in analog MIDI, and don't know what many of the buttons do in the step menu.

Only Major and Minor scales at this time, but of course one of the options is chromatic, so if you happen to know the notes for the scale of your choice, you can still use the note readout under the slider to pick the right scale. (Developer indicated more scales are coming in the future, along with AudioBus compatibility).

  • Link to the manual on the website seems to be broken...

  • Great update!

  • @JC_vt works for me. Here is a direct link http://www.amssoftware.org/manual/midiSequencerManual.pdf

The manual is still v1.0 - new version will be replacing this on in a couple of days.

  • I will say that while AudioBus is still sorely missed in v1.5, Tony is right (at least in my anecdotal experience) about being able to record with the synth app that MIDI Sequencer is controlling. There is setting that allows the MIDI sequence to keep playing while MIDI Sequencer is "minimized". I switched back to Sunrizer, which was linked with a DAW through AB, and was able to record with the AB mini-controls while in Sunrizer and my pattern still playing. Not ideal, but it works.

  • @StormJH1 v1.5 was mainly to address performance issues, full midi device routing and bank saving - I didn't want it in the AB stack if it sucked the life out of the synth apps!
Now I mostly happy with the performance (still some improvements I can make), AB is a no-brainer. I currently have OMAC for app switching but having AB mini-control would be good.
I only use audio for the background so hopefully not an issue being accepted if I play nicely with the audio session.

    @PaulB he sure is!

I see what you did there. Or do I?

Funniest '@paulb' of the week (can we call it that yet?) followed by either a hot diss or emphatic agreement of the man's decency.

  • @midiSequencer - No problem. Very nice app you have made, and I appreciate you stopping by the forums to field questions and let us know about future updates!

  • @stormJH1 - no problem. Always glad of the feedback.

  • Ha, funny guys. You got me again!!

  • Is there a 'always start on the 1' setting vs resume from stop position?

  • @syrupcore - at the moment (re midi clock messages) start = continue, so doesn't reset to step one. This will be fixed in the next patch.
You can tap the step number to reset the currently selected step (this works during play too so you can alter the logic flow - I use it to create sub-sequences out of the 16).

  • I've really been enjoying working with this for the past several evenings, and I was wondering if there would be a way to add the ability to access a defined list of snapshots that would increment at the end of a cycle, to allow for looping sequences of more than 16 notes. Also, it would be great to be able to control the tempo slider and the increment slider via a Midi CC for unusual effects. I'm really digging the upper tempo settings...with some patches it creates a really great wash of textures!

  • Tempo slider via cc would be handy.

Can snapshots be loaded via midi, say from a lauchpad or somthing?

  • @audiohub & WMWM - the only midi control at the moment (other than stop/start/continue & recording or transposition) is app switching (via OAMC). This obviously is minimal - so I will be adding automation (via midi) soon to cover:
tempo, transpose, key change, snapshot load (of currently loaded bank so from 1 to 20), nudge sequence (left or right), loop type, stepTime/noteTime toggle, cycle button on/off, mute on/off, invert key & key value, and for individual steps the setting of (note, velocity, gate%, midi channel, CC1 to 4 value).
Also setable via midi will be the CC1 controller.

I will look to deliver this in the next release (v1.6) which will also include an improved key scale UI with more scales and the ability to descale a step (i.e. make it chromatic so any note can be used).

@WMWM I have a launchpad (but not really used it for anything other than Live) so would be cool to use that to control midiSequencer! Will look into programming this.

  • Awesome, thanks.

  • that's also with audiobus support!
I'm not sure if I need a midi learn for this to allow user setting, probably will have some CC's mapped already but allow you to override. Need to look at how other apps do this - so any suggestions on a preferred method appreciated!

Also, midi control will be extended to include the rack (multiple midiSequencers running in a rack) comming soon.

  • @midiSequencer great app! Thanks for being so informative!

  • The rack of sequencers is an exciting concept.
If I understand the shape of the system to come, would I be able to use one of the 4 CC outs looped back to the input to select a new snapshot (one of the 20 in a bank) each time the sequencer cycles? If so, this would allow for larger sequences to be programmed.

  • Getting close to scripting here. How about a loop count for each snapshot? And a Next / Prev snapshot stepper that can be hit from MIDI (snap step on pattern ends of course)?

  • All good ideas. I particularly like the snapshot stepper concept. It would be nice to be able to toggle it in both directions via Midi.

  • yes - midi cc to step through (forward, backward or 1..20 directly) the snapshots

I do feel scripting would be good - much easier to build in complex logic that way (e.g. play every 2 steps or feedback (jumps in the script)). It could be per step too and feature another screen to allow you to predefine and save them as presets that you could share. Will start to put together a list of core functions this new script language should support.

With the snapshot loop count you are getting into patterns - I intend to create a session screen that allows you to link snapshots together (S1,S2,S1,S3 etc) this could include the ability to repeat a snapshot a number of times or say play a part of a snapshot (say steps 4 to 8). This will be per sequence for when you have a rack of sequences. As well as the screen it should be able to script this too.

The important thing is to keep the main midiSequencer usage simple and add this complex functionality for those of us that want more control on the logic (e.g. those of us with modular synths).

  • another idea I'm getting interested in is midi control per voice (portamento, expression) - wavegenerator & animoog 2 support this I think. This is driven by my interest in eigenharp and leap motion to add more detailed control.

  • I think this is going to grow into one of those must haves. Since I already have of course I'm biassed but Tony I like your take on our suggestions. We can dream, you can make it so!

  • david, can't have the synths getting all the fun!

  • Well after reading this discussion a few times this week, I finally decided to purchase this earlier tonight. And I can see it's definitely going to be one of my "go to" apps. Been having fun with this and iMini all night. I've used Genome for quite a while now, but I think midiSequencer just pushed it out of the way. Great app, thanks for your work.

  • @arcanescreams - glad you are enjoy it.

  • This thread gets better every time I catch up on it. +1000000 at the session screen having repeats for patterns.

Have an idea about what the language would be for scripting? Lua? JS? Something homebrewed?
