man Layr likes to eat cpu

It depends on how you use it. Remember that as you add layers, the CPU use does not go up proportionally. It was designed to created massive complex multi-layered sounds and to transition between them in performance without a glitch. You can create patches with many oscillators and filters, and they will use fewer resources than if you loaded an equivalent number of oscillators and filters by loading additional synths.

That's interesting info. That use case makes me want to try Layr. I've stayed away from it due to the assumption it wouldn't be of use on my older iPad. Gonna have to wait for a sale tho... ;)

its the same idea with lower buffer settings in AUM iguess? less spikes at 256 but also more power heat etc @wim knows this stuff.
but this still makes Layr cpu intensive. just like moog or Kaspar. I get the why, but the sum is there , it eats cpu. wich is good for live usage where constant performance is better than scaled

Layr still cpu hungry. No fuzz about it. Moog too. Sounds great, eats cpu. there.

CPU-hungry In what use case? If you use single layer instruments, it seems to use a lot of CPU. For multi-layer sounds that would require multiple instances of other synths, it uses CPU efficiently.

To create the sounds that LayR excels out that other synths can’t, you would need many instances of other synths and those instances would eat up much more CPU than LayR. LayR wasn’t intended as a synth to use when something lightweight could do the same thing.

I doubt you can get 32 oscillators, 64 filters, 96 envelopes, and 64 LFOs going on an iPad 6 and using less than 40% of the CPU with a buffer of 512 with many other synths.

For a lot of use cases, LayR simply isn’t the right instrument.

haha this looks like a mission for @McD

  • @AudioGus My enormous son is pretty much too old for pure Dad Jokes at this point and so I have switched over to Deeply Meaningful Maxims. Over the dinner table tonight: A semi truck is a gas guzzler but delivering toilet paper with a fleet of cars is worse.

In other news, if you do splurge your Christmas money on the Maschine I very much doubt we'll see you much more around these here parts, so do take care etc.

Whoever called this a gamechanger needs to check themselves. Its a really good drum synth not a game changer lol come on.

Sure it's subjective yes, but your post title is simply clickbait at it's finest. Don't use that term if you want people to take you seriously in the future.

You’re missing out on some context here. This mystery app has been hinted at on the forums for a couple of weeks now. It was described as a “game changer”. iOSTRAKON was only referring to the rumor, not posting clickbait.

Ah ok that makes sense then. I don't read most threads.

@iOSTRAKON apologies for the misunderstanding/miscommunication. I hadn't intended ill-will anyway, just wanted to point out what I thought was error. Cheers, Sippy Cup.

I've found that the secret to a more CPU efficient LayR is to lower the max polyphony to 64 or maybe 128, as it defaults to 256, and LayR polyphony resources are preallocated (and the dev confirmed this when I asked about it) so it doesn't matter if you use those notes or not, they still take up CPU cycles and memory. That's why the CPU remains constant and fairly high.

A bit like more recent NI Reaktor based synths which also preallocate the resources for max polyphony.

I don't consider NS2 to be a fully featured AUv3 host for several reasons...
AUv3 automation is lacking, support for multi-input/output AUv3s etc. etc.

I have hope for a new GarageBand update dropping soonish, there is a notification about a new 'sound pack' but it's for a newer version of GB than the current BG version LOL
(Should mean that we get new sounds for Logic Pro X at some point too).

    Cheers!

  • @Charlesalbert

No one here knows for sure, or at least anyone who does isn't allowed to say.

Short version: we have good reason to think Drumcomputer is coming sometime soon –the app is mentioned on the sugar bytes website, someone here said they thought it was supposed to arrive last week but it hasn't.

Exactly when it comes depends on whether Sugar bytes has submitted it to the app store for review, and how long that review takes.
