Thanks, all. What a way to start the weekend! <3

Thanks for your time to code this, thanks for the collaboration and above all thanks for the incredible fair price, man!

I dare to give my two cent aswell as a wishlist for santaBos

As said on Twitter. This thing is it. Its the looper of my dreams. I already have some creative ideas what to make with it and to expand the comfort zone. I absolutely love it

    1) I would really welcome a slow fading loopcontent. On my Blooper looper I have the REPEATS knob which is introducing a slow fade out (in volume) when not turned to fully clock wise. I think this would really fit he concept of Gauss well

    2) I am a huge fan and lover of Strymon‘s El Cap and now Volante. These have a wonderful loop degradation feature which will destroy the loop with every new lap so to speak.

Can you imagine that Gauss may get additional features - would love to hear what you think!

  • Internal feedback control (0-100%) could create some interesting effects.
This would go perfectly hand in hand with the already crazy things that the sequencer already does by affecting the tape-speed while recording :)

And well, I'll add a vote for optional sync the tape-start to the hosts transport controls.

Being able to import & export the tape-loop as *.wav to/from the AUv3 could be handy and I'd have no issues manually managing the files, no need to synch with the stand-alone.

Cheers & Thanks to everyone involved in creating this 'thing'.

  • Beautifully done. Brams got those UI skills, I can see why busting it open to add more features/buttons/complexity isn't on the cards and I agree 100%. It wouldn't make a better experience overall, cramming it bad move.
Exposing transport to MIDI, definitely please. It's not necessarily trying to work it as a vanilla looper, as said having record work on a pedal would be super :)
Hidden features? Ie transport sync, MDE stereo has the hidden toggle punch parameter which works as its little secret, so I don't see why it couldn't be a thing (maybe) without touching the UI.

@brambos Yeah - for us too...! Thanks to you and @Hainbach for a brilliant, creative and all round amazing app...!

So initial thoughts.. fantastic app. Love the texture it gives the sound. Snapping to musically relevant tape speeds is brilliant and makes it easy to dial in the right sounds too.

One thing I think could be improved on though is exposing 'record' to midi, both from an accesibility standpoint, and from a functional one. As it is now 'record' is by manual press only. This app wasn't designed with perfect loops in mind, but it could be tricky if you're playing guitar, violin, or anything else two handed. Personally, I'd like to see 'record' exposed so that one could record on several instances simultaneously (as the app doesn't import audio files). Bram Bos is aware and said he'd think about it, in the premiere.

But I digress, buy this now!

This was my main takeaway from the launch-chat too.
Know that I've heard you and I'm thinking about how to best do this (at the very least in the AU plugin version of the app, because I think in the standalone field-recorder use case it would be less compelling).

Instead of or additionally to the midi record, why not adding a pre-roll count-in option for the record button? That would do the trick also for the standalone app.

  • @Samu, @brambos : yup, I’d definitely +1 exportable and importable loops. Not a deal breaker, because I can always re-record the loop inside AUM using the file player and/or Enso on the channel, and chuck things back and forth via AudioShare that way, but the possibilities of being able to import a handcrafted pre-prepared loop inside the AU3 for further manipulation would be very cool.

I also second everybody who has suggested variations of a controllable decay/degrade, and a mixable ‘1989’ setting, as the option of allowing a loop to slowly degrade into soft hiss seems very much in the spirit of the thing. Enso does make slow degrade easy, which is why if paired with Gauss you can kind of work round it, but still... enough features is never enough! :)

Yeah loop degradation is pretty cool, but think we could get an emulation of this instead?:

    leatherman knife mode anyone? 😉

  • I’d just like to say thanks @brambos and @Hainbach. Been having a great time with this one. Haven’t seen any videos yet. Just letting the app show me what it wants me to see. That sync/loop function is very cool. 💃🕺✨

Loving this app, so good. One thing though, it doesn't work standalone with my Zoom IQ5 mic. Is anyone else finding this? (Works ok in AUM though with an external mic)

I can’t get it to capture sound from my iPhone 11 Pro mic in standalone mode. Haven’t ruled out operator error yet, so re-boot/app reinstall planned next. Has anyone definitely seen standalone app mic input working properly?

It works but the volume is so low that I often think it's not working. Like you, I chalked it up to user error.

Make sure you're using headphones (wired or Bluetooth) to monitor - the output is deliberately muted if you use the iPhone speaker to avoid feedback...

It’s not completely muted, but iOS keeps the volume low until you plug in/connect headphones, indeed.

  • The volume on the iPhone 8 mic's is pretty low if measurement mode is enabled.
This could very well be the case on other iPhones as well??

On the other hand I personally prefer low volume rather than auto-gain which causes un-natural dynamics when the input levels change.

I've gone as far as using the BLEASS Compressor as 'gain stager' since it allows pretty large gain boosts to bring very low input levels to ear-pearcing levels :)

Sorry - wrong use of word - should've said 'lowered'...😊

  • It's plainly ridiculous to describe this app as an 'Enso killer'... they are completely different. Enso 'record' can be operated from my midi foot controller; Gauss can't. Enso also has separate speeds for the record and playback heads, so you can automatically drop to half speed playback on completion of loop record.

    But I've heard you.

i don’t even have one on my radar 😂

is a host start/stop option projected for this project at all? i find when i go back into a project with multiple instances getting them back to where i left them is very challenging. just curious.. if not i’ll stick to one instance with all the looooops

  • @supadom said:
I see folks comparing it to Enso. How about the old Fieldscaper?

Yes, some similarities. I also use LoopField to get similar results although LF is more immediate whilst Gauss is more flexible and powerful.

  • With Gauss transport MIDI mapped I think it should be easy enough to link it to host transport. A short Mozaic script would do the job.

that would be cool, i have mozaic as it is bram but i haven’t the skills to make anything, i just go to the amazing presets, but would be rad if someone figured out how to make that work

  • @brambos in some circumstances I get a tiny click at the loop point. Can that be smoothed out? Hard to recreate because of the overall randomness. Beautiful app anyway and I can work around this if necessary. 😎👍🏼

  • Would it be possible to have an audio volume threshold that would trigger recording? So those playing two-handed instruments (i.e. cello) could arm Gauss, get into playing position, then have the loop recording start nicely when playing begins?

Apologies if this has been asked and answered.

i don’t think so, what i’ve being doing is setting the bar length, enabled metronome in aum and activated over dub, you have to play thru the tape one time empty until it cycles back around then start recording at the beginning, if you’re over 16 bars you could be waiting a while haha but it is what i’ve found to work

This could be done with Drambo if transport functions are MIDI mapped. Having that would open all the possibilities.
