And to avoid false hopes, I am exposing (in addition to what's already there):

    • Record

Thanks, this adds a lot of possibilities.

  • That's great news about the automation, looking forward to using this with a midi controller :)

Hainbach is basically just an ambient musician as far as I know. I kinda feel he is overrated but I mean no disrespect and for weird music he is ok. ITs a smidgeon boring to me but im not an expert on his music. Super tape analog and lo fi. ITs ok for mellow times.

    +!

I did like his video with the dude who makes his own tape machines and then makes tunes with them and adds sounds from his personally recorded foley library. That was really interesting.

I find that most Youtubers' content is 95% fluff. Feeling pressured to churn out content on a daily or bi-daily basis has the inevitable effect of watering down that content.

Whenever I see the Subscriber count of a channel I always wonder how many of those people still watch and out of those, how many watch on a regular basis?

I wonder what is the point of a post(s) like this. To shit on an app developer on their unveiling? To bring someone down to earth? To be sure that we are all humble?

Hainbach puts out maybe a video i week I think and they are really quality, a lot of time spent on those for sure. He’s definitely not knocking out fluff. True that some people do that, for sure, Hainbach is certainly not among them. Go look at his Patreon page and see how much he gets a month from his Patreons (these figures are publically visible on anyone’s Patreon btw) - I think it is safe to say that people value his work!

In the 80's I was a student at the Institute for Sonology in Utrecht (in the Netherlands). We experimented with all kinds of electronic audio equipment (especially from Phillips in Eindhoven!) And we had a lot of fun. We also made tape loops with recordings of live manipulated (literally hand) filtered oscilators, combined with real life sounds, etc., etc., which we then recorded on a different recorder to play in front of an audience. Happy times! Much of this 'experimental atmosphere' returns when I watch Hainbach's YouTube videos; I still find his 'results' intriguing and beautiful and I feel attracted by his laboratory-like approach. With Gauss, that old-fashioned experimentation is re-emerging and now within reach! Thank you very much @brambos and @Hainbach for this fantastic app!

The app always requests access to the device's internal mic. It's then up to the system to decide to grant that request or not. In my testing (also with BT buds) it always picked the internal mic indeed. But then there's also Apple with its unpredictable ways.

Does it consistently switch to the earbuds' mic on your end?

  • Gauss is simply incredible, my weekend has flown by. Highly recommend sandwiching it between Koala sampler and Koala FX in AUM - this gives total control of captured sounds in Koala, and a really robust fx grid for endless happy accidents. Throw another Gauss at the end of the chain to capture and manipulate more.
Longtime fan of FieldScaper, Enso and Morphagene, I didn’t think I needed another tape looper but when I saw HeinbachXBram Bos it was a no-brainer. I think being a light AU app was a great move, as he power really comes in when you layer instances of Gauss. Very clean and well-considered interface.
Thanks for the Really incredible collab guys, ok back to the tape!

I just got it. Was just quickly checking it out to get settings right before I go out to play with it. Didn’t want to try and search info while out in the bright sun. I’ll see how it goes. I think RE-1 tends to use the mic on my earbuds in standalone, but I have played with in awhile.

i’ve spent a lot of time this weekend making loops in gauss, this is a great looper in so many ways.

it’s fun to make a loop then switch on the sequencer, i’ve been setting trig1: 1/16 , trig2: 1/13 , trig3: 1/11 then pushing the attack down and bringing the decay up so the sequence will glitch just enough to be noticeable like a worn tape but no so much that it creates a highly identifiable rhythm, just that adds some warm character that makes it a bit more analog / home recording sounding

  • So while we’re sharing the love and positivity, the other thing I want to congratulate @brambos , @Hainbach and @Gavinski on is a brilliant app launch. I mean, it was slick! You had @Hainbach ’s video introducing the concept and talking to the collaboration with @brambos right after the app went live in the AppStore, then you had @Gavinski ’s live-streamed tutorial straight afterwards with the three of them in the chat room discussing the app with us.

    Very impressive, guys! 👏

Also a real buzz for me. That was the first time I did a premiere, it was so cool to chat live with everyone, especially having Bram and Hainbach there. So many people from the AB forum in there, and such a great feeling to experience live the excitement everyone had about the app. Really a memorable experience. Virtual connection gets a lot of flak these days, but this was proof, for me at least, that it can be something really meaningful and tangible. Thanks for highlighting it @gusgranite

Does it consistently switch to the earbuds' mic on your end?

I've now tried 3 different pairs of bluetooth headphones w/mics with Gauss and when they're connected, Gauss doesn't use the mic on the headphones OR the iPhone/iPad mic.

That said... I used to be able to select the bluetooth mic using AUM, AudioShare, and with RE-1 it would default to my bluetooth mic when connected. Now, all of those behave the same as Gauss. None will let me use the bluetooth mic OR the internal mic when the bluetooth headphones are connected. Hainbach says his Jabra bluetooth headphones let him use the internal mic.

Maybe there's something to do with iOS14.2? Or, maybe I need something switched on to force the use of bluetooth mics?

I KNOW the bluetooth mics work, because with the video app called FilMicPro... it has settings for audio that let you select specifically which mic is used. You can choose between iPad/iPhone Front, Back, Top, or Front/Back mics. There's also a switch for "Bluetooth Mic" when I turn that on my bluetooth headphones mics are used. So, I know it's at least possible to be able to selected specifically which input mic you want to use, because the FilMicPro app does it.

EDIT: I just tried Gauss in standalone using wired Sennheiser headphones plugged directly into the Apple lighting headphone adaptor. Even with wired headphones in Gauss standalone... it's not using the internal mic for me. The Sennheisers have an inline mic.. that isn't being used either. I also tried just some Sony 7506 cans plugged into the Apple lightning adaptor... no luck there either. Gauss in standalone doesn't use the internal mic. It only works if it's AU is hosted. Nothing works for me in standalone.

  • Given that I’ve been listening to the same five-second Gauss loop (on 0.25% speed, with the sequencer regularly dropping it another octave) through Stratosphere Reverb for the last two hours, I think I can safely say that I stan it. 😄 Nice job, everyone!

EDIT2: To sum up... in Gauss standalone mode... I've tried iPad 10.5 Pro and iPhone 11Pro (both running iOS14.2). I can't use the mic on bluetooth headphones with either. I've tried 3 different sets. I can't use the internal iPad/iPhone mic when bluetooth headphones are connected either. And, if I have wired headphones connected via Apple lighting headphone adaptor... the internal iPad/iPhone mic will not work in standalone mode either.

It doesn't appear that I can use Gauss in standalone mode in any configuration, with wired headphones OR wireless ones. So, as a field recorder... I don't see that I can use Gauss at all.

Hmmm... I've now wasted half a day trying to troubleshoot why I can't use Gauss to record input in standalone mode as a field recorder. I'm giving up for now, but with all the different methods I've tried... I'm certain it's not user error on my part. It's the same issue on two devices.

Frankly, I'm surprised no one else seems to be having this issue. Are you ALL using it hosted only? I wanted to use it as an interesting iPhone field recorder in standalone mode to use the whole screen you get in standalone mode versus the cropped/crowded full AU screen when hosted.

I kept on troubleshooting it because with how popular this app appears to be, it seems like someone would be noticing this issue as well. So I figured I must be doing something wrong.

Is there anyone here using Gauss in standalone mode with headphones and running iOS14.2 and getting any input at all?

Strangely, I've just noticed this same behavior with RE-1 too. And I know for a fact RE-1 used to work fine in standalone most with wired AND wireless headphones. Now, no input with headphones connected, either wireless OR wired.

I would speculate that if it were iOS14.2 related... I wouldn't get input from any field recorder app, but both Fieldscaper and iDensity are working fine with both wired AND wireless headphones connected.

  • I did manage to record into standalone gauss in the street yesterday using some of those wired headset stereo mics, nothing special, just wanted to try it and it seemed to work straight away, os 13.x...

However I did briefly try today to use it standalone with my IK rig and didn’t get anywhere quickly, so just loaded up aum instead, sometimes the connector is a bit of an ass to get going. I’ll give it another go tomorrow and report if it’s any better - that was on my iPad though, but still iOS 13.x

Well, I know this all used to work as expected when I was using RE-1 as a field recorder. But as I mentioned... it too is not giving me input when using wired or wireless headphones. So, it's gotta be related to iOS14.2.
