There is no evidence that there is anything nefarious going on here or that this is the result of some specific Apple/Novation collusion. The speculation feels a bit out of control, imo.
Re: Atom, just don't mention Novation brand.
Wait, this is silly. The launchpad is sold as a midi controller for various synths and DAWs. Notation is banking on the Launchpad X being adaptable to a wide range of software instruments — the more the better.
I quite literally bought a Launchpad X use with Atom 2. This use case is very different than going under the hood of the Circuit and mucking about with the makeup of the instrument.
Isn’t it?
Thinking a lot if main issue of all this isn't the name of Yurii's app - "Circuitry" .. maybe if the name would be different, without phrase "circuit" within it, maybe it will pass on apple's side without issues ... Who knows, just speculating - but i believe issue is not in what is app he doing, but that he explicitly references in name (and in description) Novation and Circuit ..
You can make yoke - put into description texts like "and Atom is compatible with that HW thing with pads, you know from the company which name is not allowed to be mentiond, who refused to give permisions for third party editor for their groovebox" :-D :-D
+1
Novation got back to me. Most likely not gonna happen. That’s a pity
Maybe we get a frigging web midi browser one day...
Too late for me. I have betrayed my ipad pro and just bought a new macbook air m1, so now I have components there... and sadly I don't care for ios version now....
...it is too late... I waited so much.... ios is dead... long live mac os big sur.
I begged for this even though my PCs use it.
I like finishing up the day with a Keylab, Peak and iPad for powering the Arturia.
PCs are racked and 2 stories down.
But I’m happy making sounds so it’s still fun.
I doubt web midi will happen anytime soon. They don’t want us to hack and break iOS using midi loops.
Web midi is a genuine security hole, sadly. It seems to be an issue related to the mechanisms provided for updating firmware that is a part of web midi. I was skeptical until someone posted an article by someone that is expert in software security. It is a solvable problem but it is such a niche problem (the number of people demanding web midi is small) that it isn’t likely that Apple would invest much to solve it.
Computer security is a much bigger deal than most people realize. The net has changed radically over the past 10 years...the amount of resources that criminal and intelligence organizations invest in figuring out how to find and exploit every possible device connected to the net is mind-boggling.
Indeed, that is the reason.
The standalone Components software is so much faster than the web version anyway, I just prefer using that myself. Well, at least I used to, just sold my Circuit today.
(but only cause new ones coming out tomorrow LOL)
How much did you get for your Circuit, @Tarekith?
I just saw an open-box for $219, which seems like a pretty good deal, but I'm wondering what the new version will allow. Maybe there will be a flood of old ones on Reverb.com?
Well, sorta. The potential threat is valid. The attack surface of users who would bother to load Components or similar in a browser and could get an external device to successfully handshake as a Novation device via web midi is incredibly small. Small enough that it's hard to imagine a bad actor even bothering with it consider how much more successful something like email phishing is. Security through obscurity is a myth, for sure, but some myths are born from truths.
The question isn't specific to Components or any one particular web site. In order for those sites to work, they use a protocol that has a security hole that Apple has decided isn't worth the expense to fix.
Sent, FWIW.
Sorry, that was a conflated response on my part. I know it's not specific to Components or any particular web site. Thing is, for the potential threat to become a real problem, several very specific things need to line up. The hacker needs to know how to reprogram the specific device firmware, the specific device has to have no protections in place, the hacker has to gain access to (or create) a website that a user might visit, etc. It's all possible but it's really hard for me to imagine anyone with the skills required to exploit this very small hole would bother with it—there's a very low chance of success and a lot more money to made doing other tomfoolery.
This whole doc is an interesting read (details the security risks along with potential mitigation strategies) but the linked page sort of outlines what I'm trying to say.

Of course, it's just me wishing/bitching for wishing's/bitching's sake.
Apple ain't gonna allow it anytime soon.
Such a shame this never got released. I was on the lookout for a iPad editor for my Novation Circuit Track
old or new version? this has been around for for quite a while and 1000x faster than components web or desktop:
https://apps.apple.com/us/app/midisynth-control/id1366849280
(not sure if it does want you want for the circuit, but i use it with launchpads)
I sold my Circuit for this reason and because I wasn't using it, because that was an amazing app and got buggered.
Agreed. Circuitry was brilliant. Really unpleasant tactic from Novation.
I don’t know what the background is, but i doubt that Novation is ‘blocking’ the dev from releasing this.
I don’t see how this is any different than Patch Base or MidiSynth Control. It’s just an app which connects to a synth because the synth allows itself to be connected to and controlled if you know how to communicate with it. I expect something ‘else’ is preventing the app from being released.
Just my 2 cents of rationalizing it by not knowing the facts or back story.
Try submitting it as a general purpose Midi Editor with Lemur Like Control Surface for any synth and IAP for Circuit synths control. 🤷♂️There’s always a loophole in software.
I’ve actually got the app and completely forgot about it. Thanks for reminding me. I’ve started the 3 day trail.
Innt it great when you've bought so many apps you've forgotten about them, and when you click the App Store link it's show you the download button instead of get? It's almost like getting the app for free.
Let’s burn or blow up our Novation devices, stream it and have our losses covered by YouTube revenue. 😈
Or here’s a better idea. Since TouchOSC has fully matured, why not create some custom controller UI schemes and sell them for select synths. The dev seems super talented and would still be able to release their vision for Circuit users.
TouchOSC should give you access to everything we need to access on the Circuit right?
I was about to buy a launchpad pro.
But reading this thread, I may reconsider my position.
Why?
I simply dislike how they treat their customers.
There are so much company that care about them I prefer give my money to them.
I had an issue with my old Novation Supernova a couple of years ago and contacted them and they sent me some components free of charge. In my book they are a good company.
