One of my most used apps, (link to a shorts demo I just uploaded for kicks) and now it got so much better. I always love using their street noises/talk shows/drones stations, they can be used in creating music without worrying about licensing and all that, and for getting experimental with other apps.
Since it's an AUv3, you can load it in AUM and record it there.
The "Speaker" icon below the volume slider on the right side is a Mute button. Difficult to stop or pause a live stream.
Yes, or use any other AUV3 host when needed
The point is. It's a very good 'radio' just to use as is which is what I use TuneIn for.
When TuneIn still had a built-in recorder(it disappeared about 3 years ago) it was really easy to capture/save the last 10 minutes or just select from how far back in time the recording should be saved or pick the 'time' from which on forward should be included when pushing record.
If you had the app running between say 10am and 11am you could select to save a specified time, super handy.
Cheers!
Pausing a live-stream would require the app to 'buffer' the stream and resume on play...
Done!
Thank you @uncledave
How much functionality does one need?
Enough? ... Perhaps the question should be: Who needs more than 2 radio stations? (Hits of the 80's and ambient, of course)
I know what you're getting at, though. But with the exception perhaps of randomisation, most of the other requests might be considered a necessity in navigating an app that offers access to 35,000 radio stations. More than that, an ongoing criticism seems to have been the inability to store more than a handful of favourite stations. That alone might've been responsible for lower-than-expected ratings.
giku_beepstreet always coming out of leftfield with generous surprises. Wrote some words in the App Store to try and help correct the past reviews.
Anyone here have any new tips on getting tricky to find streams? Looking to listen to https://www.thelotradio.com/ audio stream further down in the link. Used to be on radio garden and isn’t now. Tried to inspect with Firefox and haven’t been able to suss it out.
I use the iCabMobile browser (on iPad). It has an option to view the web page source, and you can search to find the actual stream link.
Edit: So I used your link, viewed the page source, searched the page for "only", to find the "Audio only player". Here's the link it was using:
https://cdn.livepeer.com/hls/3612a961j4sy3l7q/index.m3u8?video=false
Pasted this in a browser window and it played fine. Now, it's possible that the complex string changes dynamically, which would make it difficult to use, but there it is.
@uncledave excellent, I do have icab. Thanks!
Hmmm, this what source shows me:
https://cdn.livepeer.com/hls/3612a961j4sy3l7q/index.m3u8?video=false'
Opens in a network stream in VLC, but not in Radio Unit.
*Also there's so many that do work it doesn't really matter, just kind of cool to use this to listen to familiar stations now and not just sample
@giku_beepstreet
I'd like to add a +1 for paying of stream, if it's possible. But also wonder if it's possible to have a stop button.
I understand that this is not perhaps useful for those who are just using it in AUM sessions. However, my main interest is in standalone use. I will be using it for short periods, multiple times-a-day, and it would be great to be able to keep the app in the 'tray' and in a non-streaming state, rather than having to close and restart app all the time.
I also had an idea for a screensaver/dimmer mode, but I get the sense that I'd be the only person interested in it
Tapping on speaker stops/mutes the stream and heart adds it to favourites.
I use the app in stand-alone as well (Replaced TuneIn with Radio Unit).
Thanks
I'm sure I used to have TuneIn on an old Android tablet. Pretty sure I dropped it 'cause it switched to a sub model (I might be wrong). On the iPad, I used to use ström, but as cute as it is, it's very limited.
I saw the mute button, but didn't press it. Assumed it just muted the volume.
@giku_beepstreet any chance of making the standalone app compatible with AirPlay? Maybe as an IAP?
You can already do that…
When Radio unit is playing head over to the control center tap on the top right thing and select your airplay speaker
Thinking about it, I guess even if it’s constantly streaming, but in a muted state, it’s not going to be consuming too much in terms of CPU and bandwidth. And if I do want to free up all CPU for something else then I can just shut the app down.
I’ve not done any majr network activity checks, but I strongly suspect it’s just muting the audio as it resumes way to quick compared to starting a stream!?
@giku_beepstreet Does Radio Unit actually stop the streaming when being muted?
I’m on wifi most f the time so for me it really doesn’t matter that much.
Cheers!
For me, I guess the bandwidth is less of an issue. But I do notice my iPad getting hot quite often. I can probably blame some of that on the tank-like case, but I've always got various apps running in the background that I use frequently.
I think it’s likely not a huge deal, but as it had already been requested I added my +1
Thanks
Also,,.Is there any reason why there is a pitch difference between the stream playing in standalone and in AUM?
Was listening to a track in stand-alone and decided to capture a snippet of the audio. As soon as I loaded AUM, even to a default empty project, the pitch of the stand-alone audio increased. Instantiating RU in AUM confirms to the higher pitch. After closing down AUM the stand-alone pitch returns to its original lower pitch.
Is this a bug, a known phenomenon, or is it something particular to my settings?
Can anyone confirm?
Yes, I've also had pitch problems. I have to test it again later.
Yes, I can confirm that too. Standalone streaming is a little bit slower, thus some cents (almost a semitone?) lower... @giku_beepstreet : this seems to be a bug.
Could the pitch difference be down to sample rate? 44.1 vs 48?
Slower pitch yet... but I enjoyed the songs even better !
I've listened to Michael Sembello's " She's a Maniac"
Oh my! The 80's hits were way too fast back then.
Radio AU gives justice to the qualities of these songs
we've overly heard ! 😃
Just left one. It is 4.6 in the UK AppStore which I guess could be worse!
Ok...Great! > @Johnba said:
I listened to 'Ghost Town' in slo-mo, along with a Fleetwood Mac track.
Yea record it in a looper like Gauss or enso, or a sampler, or even just record the audio. You can basically do whatever you want with it. I like to add some fx, and capture a portion for use in a track.
Radio Unit and Loopy Pro are a great combination because Loopy can take care of figuring out the tempo, number of bars, and trims up a clean loop most of the time if you time your start/stop taps even halfway accurately. As an AU in AUM, with Link enabled it can even set the tempo of the host and start the transport if you want.
It's great for jamming along with bits of songs you capture on the fly.
I’ve been using it a lot with Spacefields for some really fun results. Then running Altispace after Spacefields for more reverb lol
