Does Unique actually add anything unique?

    Not so much IMO.

Thoughts on Cyclops and as I'm asking directly, your favourite Hard Techno synth on iOS?

Hmmmm I found Cyclop to be unfathomable. Very obviously a straight up desktop port and very cluttered. Geared towards wub / dubstep bass lines but probably capable of much more. I really struggled to understand it so gave up.

Was happy when Agonizer landed but had stability problems with this so gave up destined never to wub!

No iap sales in the Netherlands for this one…

I just checked and I still see the sales price for the e-piano and and the 808. I’m in Austria and always thought prices are per region, like EU, USA etc. - prices should be even less than on the picture btw.

It's a bit aggressive for my tastes. Definitely one for the dubstep brigade, but it does what it does well. Factory is my fave SB synth and that's a 50+% discount right now.

The techno in my collection is more at the Mike Banks UR side of things so it's very much the best of iOS virtual analogs for me, of which there are many these days but the cream of which are Beepstreet's Drambo and Zeeon (I believe Zeeon is part of the BF sales), but also includes the Moogs, the Synthmasters, Arturia's iSem, and Shockwave (that one's phase distortion but it's capable of some rich techno tones).

Does it have the tap to zoom feature? I don't really jell with Agonizer, same as 808 Bass. They both make me wonder what they do that a straight up synth doesn't. I'm sure it's because I have been doing this stuff for less than 2 years and have very little knowledge of what makes a good synth other than my ears. That said, my favourite synth is Animoog, favourite on any platform, hardware included. Well, so far. I see people praising that and I get it. Not so with the bass apps, including Bassalicious 1 and 2. They're nice, loads of presets to help you get to know the app but again, feels like it's simply a synth that can only do low end.

No there's no zoom at all. It seems that there's a huge amount of modulation options and a lots of flashing lights! Maybe I'll have another play with it 😜
Very harsh digital FMish but also chip tune sound - Skrillex - but I would expect this could be toned down a bit.
Zeeon, shockwave, Viking will all be excellent bass machines but if you're looking for lots of movement other than Cyclop and Agonizer you could try Euclid Goes to Party. Very simple synth section with a sequencer that seems to want to make techno! Almost too easy. It's on sale for pennies right now but don't expect to be blown away by the synth itself.
My current favourite synth for bass is KQ Unotone. It's a Korg (Monotron?) sort of copy and, to my ears, does bass beautifully.

Edit: Bass 808 is fantastic to me and would be in my "20 apps to keep if you had to delete everything else" list. Maybe we're not looking for the same things!

I didn't expect much from Bass 808 (not generally not a fan of Audiokit, but mainly for some of their hyped marketing style), however, I thought for the price of coffee it was worth seeing exactly what it had to offer. And was glad I did, it's probably my favourite source of saturated sub-bass on iOS.

    +1
I find it impossible to get that attack on any other synth. Normally go through Spatializer and sometimes an amp sim before.

  • @mtenk : I got Altispace 2, the docs don't mention true stereo. So, I suspect that like AltiSpace 1, it doesn't do it. It also limits IRs to 15 seconds. It has some nice features like ducking. In
haven't had a chance to compare it to THAFKNAR for efficiency.

@espiegel123 thanks for the reply! Good to know about AltiSpace 2. I guess THAFKNAR is the only iOS convolution reverb that supports quad files?

That may be the option for me, although the UI leaves a little bit to be desired.

Stereo-to-Stereo convolution requires four channels of IR. Two channels process the left input channel and provide the left and right output for the left input. The other two channels process the right input channel and provide the left and right output for the right input. The left channel outputs get summed as do the right channels.

An IR with only two channels can provide true stereo output of a mono input but not for a stereo input.

FWIW, Ownhammer's use of True-Stereo isn't entirely clear - but they aren't stereo to stereo IRs. The Altiverb web site has some good articles from learning about convolution reverb.

Stereo-to-stereo convolution is pretty CPU-intensive with long IRs. In a lot of cases the difference between a real stereo-to-stereo reverb and the various ways one can use a mono-to-stereo IR on a stereo input is subtle -- since reverberation blurs location in space.

I got the iPhone version free many years ago, not long after release, tried it a few times, but didn’t stick with it. Don’t really remember anything about it. It’s probably worth a dollar if it’s burning a hole in ur pocket. Lol.

    It's $2 - cheaper than a donut

Get the iPhone version and run it in AUM. If you find a couple of patches you can use in a track it is worth it.

    Agreed.

    I got it last year.
You can get some nice sounded stuff happening
once you play around with the presets
and it resizes quite nicely in AUM on an iPad.

Thanks, all, especially for the tip for the iPhone version. For $2, easy decision…
