Women president --> See the revile-a-tion (its a mashup of revile and revelation) of Hillary
Black president ––> See the vilification and social-a-macation of Barack
Which together got us Trump.
Unless gerrymandering gets fixed, the electoral college is abolished, DC and Puerto Rico get statehood, Fox NEWS(fortainment) and its ilk get reigned in, and all the "scared" brainwashed white people go to therapy to readjust to not being racist, authoritarian, misogynistic, hypercapitalistic a-holes who put all their frustrations on people of color and immigrants, we will not see a woman, much less woman of color as president. Not without a terrorist uprising (for reals - worse than whatever is simmering now).
This country needs to disabuse itself of kakistocracy by fools led by corporate oligarchs for clicks and cash at our expense as well as authoritarianism(fascism). Decades of dismantling government that keep it from doing good needs to be addressed. The economic hardship and lack of purpose and opportunity of the non-college educated, and even the college educated, needs to be address. We need to literally rebuild the infrastructure of this country that has been hollowed out by corporate interest and its pursuit of a mythical bottom line, as if that is independent of the larger economic and environmental health of this country and the world. How many more stock market crashes can the average wage earner handle time after time, which ONLY trickles down (while the rich get exponentially richer), much less after a pandemic? Basically AUSTERITY needs to go!
Anyway my 2 cents.
America’s racism and sexism is too deeply ingrained into parts of the country for a black, female President to be viable anytime soon.
It’s been mentioned before, but education is an issue in America that no one wants to see resolved as it will take away their power over the poorly-educated - look how Common Curriculum was pitched by Republicans as an assault on true and tried values, when in fact it was an attempt to bring all states to a standard level of education.
I worked with an ex-high school teacher some years back, who sat on various education boards for many years after her education career. She was an advocate for total overhaul of the US education system as it’s way worse than anyone thinks. Just less than half the states in the US have a testing requirement for high school graduation, functional literacy (as opposed to the international literacy definition of completing 5 or more years of school) is at best guess around 75%, and about 50% of community college entrants to 4 year degree programs need remedial help with math and/or reading before they can effectively attend classes.
We’re not the paragon of educational excellence that we are led to believe.
Donnie: "I LOVE the uneducated!"
Literally the only thing Donnie didn't lie about in over four years! 😅
It’s incredible that Melania and Donald find it impossible to fake empathy. What is Melania thinking when she swerves from the destruction at the Capitol to the unfairness of how she is being treated?Thank the stars these are real live imbeciles. Otherwise we would be truly fucked... and will be when someone smarter comes along.
Also, I think a lot of folks who tried to cultivate a detente between left and right have come up short these days. It has just happened to me. The “good people on both sides” trope rings hollower than ever, I am sorry to say. I now sincerely believe that if Trump or a surrogate sawed Pelosi’s head off with a rusty hacksaw there would be millions who would justify it. Sad! Unfair! (But she kinda deserved it, ya know?).
An oldie but goodie from the traitorous Mary Trump...
I’ve never been quite sure if she’s more like the Scarecrow or the Tin Man in what she lacks.
He and Tom Brady have been friends with Trump for years, and always said they never discuss politics. I guess Trump took things too far this time though.
Definitely a family of very punchable faces.
Ha! Nice. I was joking- it just struck me as funny. Let’s tell them that we’re telling them everything is ok so we don’t look weak. Something tells me other countries are aware of the ridiculousness that has been going on here in the USA. @Max23 , you are obviously well informed and in Germany, so whatever our leaders here think they’re projecting, it’s probably not working. I’d rather our leaders start focusing on solving problems together than making sure that it looks like they are.
Anyway, I didn’t mean to derail. Making humor about statements that I see is one of my coping mechanisms.
So that’s all we need to do, huh? 😂
Sadly, I also think you’re right. Maybe not the total revolution part (not saying it couldn’t or wouldn’t happen, just saying I try to believe that sense will find a way to make it not needed), but things like gerrymandering and the electoral college for sure. The electoral college is most definitely not needed. But, when people who are in office benefit from it in the way that they have, who will be the first to give it up?
In the meantime, I just keep trying to live a life that adds positivity to the world and do the things I can do to change things on a small scale.
With the electoral college, the issue is less politicians than states. There are a number of states whose population skews very heavily Republican...enough to prevent a change to the constitution without their consent. As Rand Paul said last week, if the Electoral College were eliminated, no Republican would ever be elected President. Since 1992, the only popular vote victory by a Republican was Bush’s second term (which he only one by virtue of being the incumbent in what he successfully portrayed as a time of war). So, it seems highly unlikely that those uber-conservative states will consent anytime soon.
I'm very tired of landmass and antiquated voting rules basically forcing the conservative (ain't nothing but fascists now) minority on the majority of the population. They get to bitch and moan and blame everyone and everything for what is and goes wrong in this country. We have to march lock step with every harebrained law they push on bathroom etiquette and bodily control. The absolutism of their collective world view is insufferable and has real consequences that HURT people. AND... when we don't capitulate, or like in this past election, say FU to the worlds biggest dick-bag, they decide its COUP time.
They can COUP all day long and call for unity. The minute anyone protests against being summarily shot by the police its F*cking LAW AND ORDER time.
As you can tell I'm MORE than annoyed.
Don’t forgot ‘this is Donald Trump’s Republican Party’ and Trump is America, America is Trump. Hail Trump.
Are you from Russia?
Yes, Republican’s want Unity, they want you to forget about Donald and his backers attempt to usurp the lawful procession of Government, pretend it was just a picnic that got out of hand, a little. ‘One rule for us, for you another, do unto yourself, as you see fit, for your brother’
"nods in agreement"
No. Would it matter if I was?
probably just recruiting.
I don't know that this is quite as bad as people make it out to be. A lot of what are seen as very Republican states (such as my state) are actually more competitive than they seem (45/55 - is not an unsurmountable lead), and US voting turnout is by international standards very low. Poor people in rural areas vote Republican for many reasons (when they vote - turnout is quite low typically) - but one of those is that Democrats really don't offer them anything. I don't think it could be achieved overnight and it would take a lot of organizing (and probably a sea change in the Democratic party), but it's feasible.
That said, the low hanging fruit in the US is voting reform. It still blows my mind that the Democrats haven't made more of this, and part of the reason for this may be that the current system often suits Democratic incumbents quite well. There are several states in the US that should be Democrat, but due to electoral fraud are still Republican. The most egregious example of this is North Carolina, but there are numerous others (Texas, Florida, Georgia of course). This is a disgrace and it's one that's very easy to make a moral case for that it would put the Republicans on the defensive (worst case scenario they're distracted by the need to defend the indefensible, best case you win). Other reforms would include taking voting out of the hands of states (and elected officials), creating national standards for federal elections, funding elections federally, mandating time off for elections and making sure everyone is able to vote (rural voters are often miles away from the nearest polling station). Obviously everyone should have the right to vote, including ex-felons. And registering to vote should be simple and mostly automatic.
I don't know if Americans realize how much of a joke their electoral system is internationally. Waiting in line to vote is not something most countries do. Getting to the polling station and discovering you're no longer registered is what you expect in countries that not are very democratic.
A further problem with the US is the way that the two party system has been effectively enshrined into most states' constitutions. A two party political system doesn't work for any country, but for one as large as the US it's ridiculous. Not only is the Democratic party a ludicrous coalition of hedge fund guys, unions, minorities and educated professionals - but the Republican party is also an unholy coalition of fascists, right wing christians, libertarians and the rich. In a healthier political system there would be at least two parties representing the Republicans, and maybe more. The fascists (and Christian extremists) would have their own party, but they would not be able to dominate the one Republican party as they do now.
