Even though you may think that you know best, sometimes it makes more sense to stand back from the crowd and clear your mind and spread positive thought through positive actions like making music.

Hell yah, and any group of people not bathed in strobe lights and lazers, rendered completely inaudible by sweet throbbing bass is not to be trusted!

    Exactly!
It seems that this whole thread is about exactly this. It starts off as "An extraordinarily dark day in American history..." and quickly becomes a rant by the author and his supporters in an effort to out other forum members as to their political stripes. Where upon they descend like a bunch of ghouls to feast on the caresses of their imagined political opponents.
No real political discussion allowed here. Just rants and finger pointing.

I don’t agree with you in the slightest, but I will always be in your debt for the accidental phrase
    “to feast on the caresses”
    I’m so stealing that.
    Thanks

  • All I know is I'm stealing "feast on the caresses" for my lyric ideas notebook.

I hope you are prepared to pay royalties and that the proceeds will be going to ____________ political party. :p

I see. So people shouldn’t have conversations and share knowledge or points of view if they aren’t what you consider positive?

We shouldn’t watch calamity and try to make sense of it? Gotcha.

I know! What the hell, right?
    SO touchy!

So what if the president spreads lies to damage the integrity of the election?
So what if he started the disinformation months before any votes were cast, fully aware he'd lose in a landslide?
So what if he scheduled a "rally" for the very time and date when the legitimate outcome of the election is confirmed by Congress?
So what if he literally sent a crowd of rioters to the seat of our democracy to "show strength"?
So what if the crowd chanted unanimously HANG MIKE PENCE! (Locker room talk, amirite?)
So what if FIVE PEOPLE DIED in an act of insurrection?

Ha! Just saw I was beaten to the punch on that yoink. Dammit! I guess I'd better use it fast.

  • @Bladerunner: I am serious. What was your point? You complained about people finger pointing and claim (without providing evidence) that the point of the discussion was outing other forum members. What I have seen is mostly people trying to make sense of worrying events and sharing their analyses and debating them. The point does not seem to have been “outing” anyone. It seems like mostly you wanted to point a finger without offering some alternative analysis.

It seems to me that the events of the past couple of months (and highlighted by the attack on the capitol) have made it clear that a significant portion of the U.S. population is sympathetic to a certain flavor of authoritarianism and is willing to subvert the law to impose their preferred leader.

Do you disagree that the rise of violent proto-fascists is worrisome?

For those of us in the U.S., this will be an ongoing crisis-in-waiting for what may be a longtime. It is certainly your right to disagree with any of the viewpoints, but it seems to me that such discussion is one of the ways that we can come to understand different interpretations. If you think you have something to add, why not add it rather than dash into the room simply to throw shade on people for trying to make sense of events they feel a need to come to grips with.

If you have alternate explanation, why not share it?

Coleman Hughes works for the Manhattan Institute which is a very right wing think tank. Whatever he wants to call himself, he's a right winger. Glenn Loury was selected for the position of undersecretary of education for Reagan's administration (before having to withdraw due to a personal scandal) in 1987 - so yeah, definitely on the right. John McWhorter I don't know so well (though some of the people he associates with I do). He hates the book 'White Fragility' so he can't be that bad I guess. So yeah I take it back about him - I was judging him by some of his associations, but I haven't actually read anything by him.

What about the book “White Fragility” do you find so objectionable that it raises someone in your esteem if they hate the book?

  • You know what? This column gets it right:

    No Sympathy for the Hillbilly
Democrats need to stop trying to feel everyone’s pain, and hold on to their own anger.

Let’s stop pretending that if we read cynical best sellers like Hillbilly Elegy in book clubs and empathic magazine and newspaper interviews by mainstream journalists with those Trump-loving “folks” in diners and bars that we’ll suddenly unearth some conscience that isn’t there. Let’s stop taking seriously NeverTrumpers like David Brooks who as recently as August enthused about the “intellectual ferment” in the Republican party and touted to Times readers four senators who embody the “post-2020, post-Trump Republican future”: Josh Hawley, Marco Rubio, Tom Cotton, and Ben Sasse. (No Black men need apply, of course.)
