I’m still on the fence about Harrison mixbus, seems really nice and straightforward but a little bit ‘edgy’ in the interface...I use a lot of open source software but with audio stuff I’ve never found it that solid

Awesome workflow, but really unstable. It sucks, because I love mixing in it but too many times it really made projects tough to finish (with people waiting on me at a deadline). I decided not to upgrade to 32c v6 after v5 gave me many problems. I’ve been off and on with it since v2, and it sounds so good.

I’m using logic, softube console 1, uad, and external summing now and very happy with that setup.

Sounds like sage advice taken from experience. I’m likely to get a new mac soon so thinking I may trial Logic and see if I get back into that as it was my favourite back in the day... cheers!

  • In case anyone missed it last time, the Memory-V instrument for Syntronik (PC/Mac) is free for the next 2 weeks.

Yeah, I tried switching to studio one for a few months for mixing and just cancelled my presonus subscription. Unfortunately I had to get protools in order to teach a class this semester, and I remember now why I stopped using it so long ago. It’s as if Avid truly believes that nothing about using a DAW should be remotely ergonomic or easy. The manual is 1500 pages!!!

We are using reaper in the class too, and I’ll always have a soft spot for reaper because I used it for so many years (since pre version 1), and still do sometimes, but compared to logic it feels really disorganized and scattered.

For live recordings I usually use waves tracks live, which is ardour really cut down to minimal options and optimized for live tracking. The cool thing about that program is that you can open the session in ardour or mixbus with everything in place, and I did love that workflow, but the aforementioned issues stopped that. I can export the tracks in one click from tracks live though so that’s good.

For creating though, logic is head and shoulders above other daws with the way so many instruments and tools are integrated. Plus, your ios GarageBand projects can open in logic, which is amazing integration. There’s a few things I’d love to have in Logic for mixing, such as folders within folders, but mixing in it still works well.

  • Between 12 and 15 February, all sample packs are reduced by 40%. Enjoy! https://www.producerspot.com

  • Voltage Modular by Cherry Audio is on sale, all core bundles.

    https://cherryaudio.com/voltage-modular/buy

Only $19 for the Ignite bundle, discount upgrades to the Core package seem pretty frequent.

  • The desktop sales are really strange and so I never ever buy something at full price since a while.
This up to 90%+ less sales really are setting the "expensive" desktop tools in a new light.
Some are cheaper than iOS apps in sale these days. I wonder if the market is so saturated or that all the normal prices are just set so high to offer the the sale prices 2, 3 or even 4 times a year.
Of course I will not complain and happy to save some money.
Just strange and most people using plug-ins these days know that there is always the next big sale around the corner.
That said, I see that Pigments 2 is also 50% off again :)

Oh, it seems I missed it by a day, sad. I could got that for 15 with a voucher on top. Almost unreal how the gift these expensive tools away these days. The thing is now I never ever would pay more than 50 for it.

I opted for a subscription to both Vital and Kilohearts complete bundle. $15 a month for both, and both companies give you enough credits back to own the software outright. That’s a pricing model where I think both consumers and devs win in the end.

Vital is great indeed, I use the free version but think about the pro upgrade to support this great synth.
But subscription is something I never ever want to use since it does go against everything in my brain.
The only subscription I ever used (and still does) for music is for a very special FX tool since I like it and there is no alternative.
Also after some years of subscription you might payed more than you ever would to buy a tool.
But then some subscriptions seems not that bad since you could pay for a year but still can use everything after it you got within this year. This might be almost the same as paying for a major upgrade each time.
But still I feel not great with bound to subscriptions (beside for payTV).

I generally agree, but the sub for Vital is $5, and you get $5 in store credit every month. I wouldn’t touch a subscription that didn’t have what I consider to be a reasonable buy out option though. Can’t count the number of iOS apps that I’ve dumped because they went sub only. Kilohearts is about as reasonable with the monthly store credit that you get back.

    Also, synths!

Good points, there are def. some subscription options out there which looks better as I thought.
I mean we anyway never "own" a music app or plug-in but are just allowed to use a license in terms of the EULA.
But of course I appreciate companies which offers both options.
At the end I am just more of a save and buy at once type of person, be it a music app or a car and use it until it die or soft- and hardware updates make it obsolete.

Lol, i also think there are more special sale days/weeks every year until we are at a weekly Sunday sale or whatever.
Oh and I just saw the Knifonium sale is extended until 14th.
Another thing which I should learn since almost ALL sales get extended, lol.

FRMS is similar to Polygon in many ways and I love it on iOS l'm sure I'll get FRMS on desktop as it's more deep than Polygon but for now, Polygon is a very good alternative and can create some pretty amazing sounds...you can download trial versions of both to compare but the Polygon sale only lasts to the end of February.

Omnivox came out today, it’s a free sample pack from Slate Digital with all vocals, over 750 of them. Approximately 830mb, but a lot of good stuff inside. You should also be able to get the 6 other sample packs they have free 1. Hip Hop 2. EDM 3. 808, and packs 4,5,6 are classic drum machines packs #1-#3

Here is the link for the EDM one

    EDM Pack https://slatedigital.com/edm-sample-pack-2020

Just simply create an account with only email and password, and you should have access to some of the free ones. I joined an Omnivox waitlist a week ago, and download the other packs over the past several weeks so I can’t remember exactly what I did. But you will definitely get the EDM pack free (see link above) at bare minimum, hopefully you can still get the others as well.

  • Here is the link for the info on the 6 free Slate Digital Sample Packs, plus Omnivox makes 7 packs total.
