Yes, it can work this way.
You could always contact the dev. His site has a contact form or email or something
Finally had a chance to dig into MidiDreams last night. Good fun but this in particular was a big downer for me.
I suspect it’s intentional to keep the slider ranges “reasonable”, which I get. Maybe a new step row for octave (beneath the sliders) would work? I think B-Step worked this way.
Thanks wim,
I think I'm going to buy it.
Thanks @Gavinski for your input!
If I can't get it to step record, I'll post the result here.
This is my holiday self-gift.
Wait! Sorry, I misread your post. MidiSTEPS is the app I was thinking of. That’s the app you’re after, I believe. Sorry for the confusion!
MidiDREAMS can’t do this at all.
I wish I waited a little longer to read this.
What sold me was the section of the midiDREAMs manual for AUM saying: "Enter a few notes into midiDREAMs by tapping some of its keyboard keys.".
For Audiobus it says: "Use either the midiSTEPs keyboard or the Audiobus keyboard to enter some notes into the sequencer. Just tap some notes in and they should appear." (I figured just the word "midiSTEPs" was a misprint).
I'll have to give the entire App a good going over to see if I'll use it.
Aside from midiDREAMs and midiSTEPs.... Are there any other AU "step-record by playing a note" type of step sequencers, that can use direct midi note input as a gate to play recorded steps, one step at a time per key-press?
I believe that to be an error in the manual. Personally, I’d feel justified in requesting a refund on that basis. I believe you would like MidiSTEPS a lot.
Some of the MiRack sequencers are appropriate for this. I believe we’ve touched on this in a couple of earlier threads.
Wow. I’m just a wealth of misinformation tonight.
Gate driven playback doesn’t seem to be working in MidiSTEPS? It does in MidiDREAMS. Wtf? So confusing.

So just one of the features you want is available in each app, but neither of them has both. Neither is a fit.
So I have a pattern in midi dreams but want to be able to duplicate it into a new patter n in a different key then have something to trigger the change of patterns. I have Atom 2. Is there a way to do this or do I have to record each pattern into multitrack recorder and build track that way? Thanks
Or record the midi into atom I suppose, is that the typical process?
Yes, record it into atom 2
I’ve been having to record it into something else just to fix the timing.
Or record the midi into atom I suppose, is that the typical process?
Thanks for the question.. Yes, Sugar Bytes Thesys does it... Never used it before... But... Wow..
Tools > Copy. Change to the new pattern. Tools > Paste. Then change the key.
Ah! Thanks. Then record into atom once down or can I trigger the pattern change externally with a “sequencer”? I really am still so new to this!!
Oh, and you'll need to use the "Pattern" button below the scale setting to avoid the changes affecting all patterns.
If "MIDI Note Input" is set to CTL, then midi notes 12 - 27 (C0 - D#1 on AUM keyboard) select the pattern. They can also be selected by Program Change.
Ta and can I trigger automatically ie not through keyboard press
@wim said:
Correction: it does work to advance the pattern. I didn't understand the settings. "Sequence Trigger" must be set to Gate. Then, to advance the sequence using any key you also need to set "MIDI Note Input" to Gate. With MIDI Note Input set to CTL, only note 36 advances the sequence.
Blimey this is whole thing has become so complicated.
Just trying to “compose” / “create” on the iPad the initial idea then develop it / structure it on the iPad before I take those parts to Logic
Still learning l 🥺
It only gets complicated as you add more apps that do complicated things. If you just stick to a piano-roll timeline, recording, developing, and arranging as you go, you can avoid lots of complexity.
This is a bad place to hang out if you're trying to keep things simple.
I haven't bought MidiSTEPS yet.
Question.
In MidiSTEPS, when setting "MIDI Note Input" to Gate, so the sequence will advance one step at a time per each Midi keyboard keypress. How well does it handle rapid keypresses?
MidiDREAMS seems to have a limit in the speed you can manually advance through the steps before it "gets confused".
I'd also like this App a lot better if I could "hear" what the note the slider is being set to in real time, while it's being adjusted.
But for my intended use, it's currently not a very intuitive workflow, IMO.
I'll have to think about getting MidiSTEPS instead.
I added a measure worth of 16th notes one 8th apart in Atom, then took the sequence more than 20x at 120bpm without midiSTEPS missing a note. It didn't work out at first when I had the notes as 8th notes. I guess there needs to be some minimum time between the note on and note off.
You're right about the gate advance in MidiDREAMS it gets confused at even moderate note input rates.
Cool! Thanks for your help confirming this.
Looks likely that I'll be buying MidiSTEPS next.
Do please contact the dev! And maybe suggest an 'audition' mode like atom has. Current workaround is to keep a piano handy to play to find the next note you want to add to your sequence lol
Thanks Gavinski.
I just started exploring MidiSTEPS and it looks like it should work for what I'm trying to do.
Is it possible to get Drambo to do ‘skips, resets’, etc as MidiSteps?
Seems there was an update … Thanks
