Interesting. I assumed (having previous expected this to be called the A14Z or something) that the public and critical reaction to M1 has been so hugely positive that this would guarantee a ton of PR. However, the jump to 16GB RAM would also back up your telegraphing theory, they don’t usually even tell you how much RAM is in your iPad.

Yeah, that's exactly the kind of thing that makes this interesting. Just putting the 16GB option in there is kind of nuts, but for Apple to state it on the tech specs like they would with a computer hints at something.

Maybe they're hinting that they got tired of tech bloggers continually asking them about the RAM specs after every keynote, and decided to just include it in the published specs and save themselves the hassle? ;)

That would be very un-Apple like. They know that sort of stuff just gives them more press.

It could just be that since it is an M1, they decided to spec it like it was. But, that's still the same thing then. They are treating it more like a computer release.

  • I will be surprised if it turns out to be anything more than marketing / focusing on strengths...
Until recently, that number alone wasn’t impressive compared to competition, now that it’s actually impressive, it’s part of the spec.

M1 in an iPad will never happen eh? 🤔

I'm pretty ecstatic to have been wrong about them putting the M1 in. I still think it is going to be heavily thermally constrained compared to the MacBook or the Mini, but Thunderbolt/USB4 is everything I wanted out of the new iPad.

    The screen is insane too.

I also still hope that they don't bring Logic to the iPad and that they do bring MainStage. But, with the iPad able to hook up to large displays, there is a case for a very usable workflow with Logic on an iPad Pro. It will be interesting to see if they fragment the market for their own software between their devices.

Ehh? You HOPE that Apple DON’T release Logic Pro for iPad??

You must be a sad guy...

Or, I'm more hopeful that they will do something better.

I don’t understand, you wish Apple refuse to release Logic Pro to iPad, BUT, if they do, it must be BETTER than Logic on Mac??

So, that means you’re disappointed with the Mac version?

Sorry, I don't mean to be confusing. What I mean is that I don't think that Logic as it is will play to the strengths of the user experience on iPad. I feel that it would take so much work to clean the decades of code and UI from Logic that they could bring something much better if they were to start completely from scratch and make a new DAW for the touch based UI.

I look at the instruments and effects bundled with Logic and I can't see trying to use those on a touch interface. Same thing with most of the main Logic UI. I actually think they would be better off making a GarageBand Pro than bringing Logic to the iPad.

  • I did a reverse image search and the only locations I can find it on are for educational pricing for apps. So, I'm guessing a mockup. It might having something to do with Swift playgrounds?

    Educational pricing page indeed.
    Mockup very likely.
But maybe it suggests that there would be an Xcode on ipad with Swift-support-only. I don't know.

  • What do people think about 11 inch pro with 1tb and 16gb ram vs 12.9 inch with 512 gb and 8 Gb ram?

This is the price point I could go in at and it’s a dilemma. How much difference does 16/8 ram make or could it make if more pro software starts coming over?

I was even starting to think about a MacBook at the price point but I feel quiet excited about where iPads are going and the possibility of the dam breaking now with music software coming over. Swam etc might have been the first few fissures...

  • Oh, also wondering if anyone has experience with the keyboard stands. I have had two of the older Apple keyboard folding cover things that came out with the older pros and they were abysmal. The keys were just flat not proper keys and with both of them extended use wore away the felt and this weird green gunk built up (I’m a writer).

The new keyboards with the swivel thing look different - like the buttons are proper keys. Wondering if anyone who types a lot has experience with them. I can’t stand the Apple island keys on their Bluetooth keyboards just feel cheap and nasty - my favourite keyboards for typing are actually laptop style ones, not a fan of mechanical keyboards at all either for speed or feel.

    Sorry for double posting!

You know, you can also use any Bluetooth wireless keyboard with these iPads? I’ve used my old wireless iMac keyboard on my iPad Pro before and it worked fine.

  • Nothing but base models for me until the music apps catch up to the hardware potential.

More RAM, more storage, faster CPU mean apps will be better able to take advantage of these improvements.

It doesn't change the fact that we are currently unable to run a DAW on iOS with more than 5-6 loaded AudioUnits...

48-50 tracks on Air 3, Cubasis 2, about half AUv3, half audio. With scores of AUv3 efx. So it's absolutely doable, with a bit of freezing admittedly. But many more than 5-6 AUv3 instruments.

    If you say so!

    I do say so.

None of that adds the basic sort of functionality a lot of people expect until the apps catch up.

You don’t think the app developers are going to jump all over this? They will.

yup, that is what I meant by 'catch up'

There’s already storage galore if you could actually use external drives. I’d never spend 2000$ on an iPad with the current file system limitations.

  • Blimey tho!.. 16gb RAM...

I would have been impressed at 8!

I think my 2018 iPad pro 12.9 has 6gb? not sure

4GB, unless it’s the 1TB capacity, which shipped with 6GB RAM.

Mine has 2. I will soon be swimming in an ocean of bits.

So you really want me to believe that an iPad with 3Gb RAM has as much power as a desktop ? 😂

When did "as much power as a desktop" become the standard under discussion?

    ??

Nobody claimed that an iPad had "as much power as a desktop" before you used that phrase in your reply.
