Yeah I agree. This would make sense if Atom was a standalone app, but it's clearly designed just for AUV3 use. I think that would make it less of what it's supposed to be and more complicated for you for no real benefit. Arguably, it actually makes it more complicated for the end-user too, having to manage two different timelines and decoupling/recoupling. Just another layer of potential error.
Nice! I take it you've gotten the hang of sequencing the sequencers? It's not an easy task to figure it out by yourself without a manual.
Yea! And with the recent addition of choke mode, it’s even quicker than my previous method. The AUM screen becomes the launchpad. On the iPad you can see a lot more instances of Atom in AUM than on the iPhone, so i still need to configure it different on the iPhone , since you have to scroll thru each channel to access the launch buttons, I’m going to try to find a way to create some set up (maybe with Mozaic) like a master control to launch each row simultaneously. Its fun to try new things and build on
Gotcha, thanks for the explanation.
I could give you a very clear reason: in many of my songs, I don’t use the transport at all. And I use only AUv3 apps when I do so. I do this consciously as I’m tired of music locked to the grid. I get that I am in the minority (for now) and so I understand and respect Victor’s choice here. But “no real benefit” is your appraisal, not mine—and only consider your use cases. There are other solutions if I prefer them (LK, SPA, etc); I just happen to like Atom2 the best. So I’ll get in the habit of hitting play before I begin. No big deal.
If it helps with the mental model, one way to think about it is in terms of having one true MIDI clock, instead of multiple competing ones. Atom (just like every other MIDI thing that cares about timing) needs a clock from somewhere, and AUM happens to offer one if you press play. Could Atom have its own MIDI clock? Technically yes, but if the workaround is exceedingly simple for users, then I prefer less code to maintain.
Btw, in case you didn’t know, you can completely decouple playback from host sync if you set your clips’ trigger and release quantum beats to 0, in the advanced launch settings, in which case nothing will be in sync anymore. That means you’re decoupled from “the grid”, if that’s what you’re looking for. This is the default for hold mode.
New to Atom and wondering if it’s possible to have a new instance copy settings from active instances, like automatically going to the same scale/launch settings?
If you want to copy the number of bars, all notes, loop markers, time signature and grid settings, use “Add as pattern” from the Layers menu. If you need more, save a preset from your original clip and load it in the other one.
Yes! First thing I found after downloading. Works as I expected and the launch options are ridiculously powerful and flexible.
Might have been discussed in this mega thread before: Can anyone confirm that under iOS 13.7 the clip functionality to Launchpad X is not given? The appstore description says iOS 13.0 or newer is required. Right after loading an instance of Atom 2 into an AUM slot it should be visible mirrored on Launchpad. Unfortunately this does not work for me, my LPX does not switch to session mode. The control of LK on the other hand works perfectly. On my iPhone with iOS 14.4.2 there are no problems, works as expected. Feels like I need to update my iPad now and Victor may have his description in the appstore.
The App Store description explicitly says "Hardware integration with controllers requires latest iOS version". It's right there at the top
However, the very good news is that @MrBlaschke and @espiegel123 did some incredible investigative work and I think we're very close to enabling this feature on older iOS versions. Unless there's some extraordinarily unexpected issue, expect an imminent update that will unlock this functionality on iOS 13 soon. In fact, there's also a workaround that we've found for the time being, that involves forcing the Launchpad into the Session mode, then Atom can take it from there, though it's a little bit involved for now.
Nice! Thanks for this!
This is exactly what I was thinking but had decided to wait to ask for considering all that is on your plate already.
One thought as a suggestion: A status bar or message area somewhere in the UI might be handy. Something unobtrusive or able to be toggled on and off that displays status messages such as when a controller connects, mode is changed, etc., would be convenient along with the logs for a deeper dive.
But I'm good to go with the logging you've added, especially since I have Textastic. Thanks!
This should be very easy to add. I don't know why I haven't even considered it yet. It's a great idea!
Ok, well how about just 3 good reasons/features to choose to use Atom 2 versus LK?
Sorry Victor, > @blueveek said:
You're right, of course, I screwed that up. I am one of the people who do not immediately rush to every update. But I wanted to do the update soon anyway, so no problem. I am a big fan, incredible work, thanks a lot that that wonderful tool!
No need for any of that, I didn't take it the wrong way. If there's anything I could do for now to make it clearer for other potential buyers let me know and I will. Hopefully though, the update will come soon enough and there won't be a need for it.
@blueveek As the original proud owner of 'I'm A Well-Fed Mama's Boy & These Are My Sausage Fingers' I am very grateful that the Apple Pencil thingie now works spectacularly. Many thanks and ++ etc.
I'm very happy to hear that. @winconway bomb tested it and painstakingly went through every single little button or touchable bit in the interface, double tapped and triple checked, to make sure it works perfectly. Direct your applause to him.

Here's an example of some Launchpad light show stuff running on atom 2. This bypasses the inbuilt AUM integration with the launchpad's session mode as it obviously needs to take in the MIDI output from atom 2's clips. I set the launch style to One-shot and set a launch note to the corresponding pad (this is why I was thinking a midi learn way would be easier than setting all 64 pads to their corresponding notes but it's still doable!)
I recorded the pad light sequences with the step input recorder and then adjusted the velocities manually. You can make the trail longer than a single pad light by stretching notes and overlapping.
Being able to step chord records as previously requested in this thread would be really useful for this!
I like this method - a bit fiddly but somewhat more direct than using things like MIDI processors with chord/transpose/arpeggiation modifiers like Ableton midi effect racks.
Not at all, your description is more than sufficient. It is almost always the user who does not read the description or the f***ing manual. Whereby I actually do not need to be reproached for either. To my apology, as a supposedly informed reader of this thread I didn't think it necessary to read the appstore description, I should have done better.
That is a tough, tough one. Both are excellent and there is so much overlap between the two that it's honestly hard to come up with any huge differentiation. I love them both, gravitating to one or the other largely depending on mood.
That first one is the one that I float back and forth on the most. Having one centralized place to do sequencing and to launch clips can be just what I need for organization. To be honest, the idea of 16 Atom instances staring me in the face to achieve a 4-track / 4-clips per track clip launching grid makes my eyes cross. Then if I decide I want to add another track ... add four more instances of Atom. Eh no. I'm gonna be using LK if I'm planning to work like that.
But more often than that I'm not working like that. Usually I just want to hook up an app and start jamming with the knowledge that I can capture and loop anything good that comes out. Atom is just a super-streamlined way to get up and running like that. It has the macro capability to be more organized than that if that jam starts to turn into something worth organizing, but can start off with almost no barrier to creativity.
I probably didn't express that well. As I say, I don't give the edge to either app. They're both just beautiful tools to fit different moods to me.
Using Atom2 to program light shows on a Launchpad?
I love it!
Now I'm tempted to start making animated light shows that play in time with my tracks
I'm working on a quickstart/manual with Blueveek right now.
Hoping to release very soon.
Some quick answers...
exactly!
you could have 64 atom instances for sound midi clips, 64 for light midi clips
Only a matter of time before someone builds Snake. I bet there’s someone out there getting their hands dirty with the user scripting and giving it a go
Not sure about other users but I would prefer that the state of scripts being used(checked) is stored with the state saving (host project).
Just tried and seems like there might be a bug, choke group settings save but don’t work?
Good idea, I haven’t considered this being needed. Logged!
That’s strange! If all clips are on the same track, and each clip has a different slot index, then “choke mode: on” should work. I’ll have a look at it in the morning.
Note: you don’t technically need to be online, just have Drive enabled, just for Atom.
I need to put the files somewhere for user editing, and there’s a limitation (thanks Apple) where AUs can’t have access to the “On my iPad” local directory without prompting the user for it first. There’s a few workarounds that I can make to get it working without user access to the files, but then there’s no editing, and so far there’s been an extremely low number of users with iCloud Drive disabled. I’ll consider it if there’s more.
@blueveek thanks for the logging. I also have textastic so will give it a try.
Cool! I’ve scheduled it for update 2.0.4.
