  • Hi @cuscolima,

    Thanks for asking!

Basically - each year, we have actively develop that year's version to the end of the year (Wotja 21 this year).
I'm sure that others on this forum will tell you that we work hard to keep developing each year!

The next year, we will release a new yearly app version - so, that'll be Wotja 22.

Much, much more information on this topic is here:
    https://intermorphic.com/help/#faq-upgrades

    Best wishes,

    Pete

  • @Paulinko @Jumpercollins I'm just finishing-off testing of state save / restore for Wotja AUv3.

I finally figured it out!

    Pete

  • In the next update, the AUv3 saves the Mix or User album/playlist file name and latest data; when you restore the DAW project data, the mix / album / playlist (if any) is auto re-opened; but applying / using whatever data you last edited up to even if you hadn’t saved your document.

If your original document is no longer available, the data is copied to clipboard (so you can import it) and an alert is shown telling you what to do.

So, that seems to work really well!

    Best to all,

    Pete

  • @impete It's a major pain that Pro subscribers don't get their full feature set in the AU version, but are advised to purchase the 'one-off' licence. This should be reviewed if at all possible...

  • @enkaytee this isn't an "artificial" restriction we've "imposed", but rather it is because of technical limitations imposed by Apple, that I've not figured out how to work with/around yet.

Background: the AUv3 extension and the Standalone app both work in their own iOS / macOS sandbox(es).

Luckily, Apple allow extensions to access iCloud, so documents can be shared between the AUv3 and App.

However, Apple don't allow extensions to access Subscription data (which is annoying), so the AUv3 extension cannot show an in-app store etc.

Anyhow: rest assured that if we ever figure something out, we'll be sure to do so!

    Best wishes,

    Pete

@impete OK - thanks for the clarification. Perhaps you could consider adding a 'return to host DAW' button in the IAA version as a bit of a sweetener? That way, it's much easier to move between Wotja and the host. Cheers 👍

I've had reasonable crackle-free success running two instances with one as AUv3 and one as IAA. (And of course if you have an second version of the app, eg from a previous year, you can also run that in IAA alongside this year's in AUv3.) Two Wotja turntables is a pretty amazing setup.

    @impete
Return to host will show the host app symbol ie AUM. Touch it and you are sent back to the hosting app. Saves double clicking the home button all the time on older ipads to get out of full screen IAA.

Aha, thanks for explaining. So you mean from the Standalone Wotja app, or from the AUv3?

The thing is, I actually tried to do this before release for the AUv3, but there didn't appear to be a way to do this from the (sandboxed) AUv3 extension ...! If anybody technical out there has any suggestions, please be sure to let me know!

As for the standalone Wotja; I'm not sure how Wotja could know what other app might using Wotja might be via Audiobus / IAA...

    Best wishes,

    Pete

Thanks @Jumpercollins - @impete yes, it's a relatively common feature on IAA plugins - and very handy. I reckon it would be a great addition and allow subscribers to have full Pro access in a DAW with the convenience of easily moving between apps...cheers...!

BTW I've been a fan of the Sseyo apps for years - an early Koan user - a long long time ago...!

  • This is great news.

Could seasoned users of Wotja recommend the best way for me to proceed?

I am currently a Pro subscriber. Should I end my subscription and buy Wotja 21? Is this the best way to enjoy the new features?

And if I did do so, would I lose my mixes and other data from the free/subscription-based version of the app?

Definitely - I've loved the way the concept has been developed to where it is now...BTW, this is what the 'return to AUM' plus transport button looks like in the IAA version of Animoog:

I'd suggest you first get the Pro version, and see where you are.

Once you're happy with your document access etc. from the Pro version, you could then cancel your Wotja Free subscription.

Whatever happens, I'd suggest that there is no need for you to delete the Free version of Wotja. Both Wotja versions (Pro and Free) can exist side-by-side.

NB: assuming you're using iCloud, then your documents (Mixes etc.) would be accessible automatically by both versions.

As Pete says, you wouldn't lose any of your existing data unless you actually delete the Wotja Free app, but if your files are stored locally rather than in iCloud you would need to move them all, not forgetting presets and scripts, into the Wotja Pro 21 sandbox. (The desktop versions, however, use the same folder, so no action needed there.) The AUv3 has its own separate local folder that can only be accessed with a jailbreak.

  • Ah, the joys of sandboxing...

@impete can you please tell us a bit more about your pricing/support/release strategy. How long will this version be supported ?

The Pro license is a permanent license which comes with updates for the remainder of the calendar year of purchase. At the year end, the current version will stop receiving updates, and a new app will be released, but you retain a permanent license for the version purchased.

  • Thanks for the suggestions everyone :)

  • I've bitten the bullet, cancelled my subs and bought the full Pro version - it cost a little more than if I'd continued with the sub but the advantages of full access in the AU is priceless to me...👍

AUv3 seems pretty good overall, from a quick initial play.

I did notice that the Wotja AUv3 didn't pick up the AUM host tempo unless I made a change to the tempo in AUM, but any changes to tempo in AUM were immediately reflected in the Wotja AUv3.

Wow - 30 years! Didn't realise it was that long ago, but Koan was one of those ground breaking apps that redefined how computer music could be made...😁

Great - that's how I'm used to state saving working elsewhere. The saved state is independent of any preset, and must be captured by saving a preset or it will be lost.7

Good work! Gone are the days of trying to remember which Mix I was using in my AUM set :)

  • Are these devs still doing that thing where you only buy the app for the year, then after a year they release a new version and the one you bought doesn't get any more updates? Basically, a yearly subscription?

Well, as others have said, the big difference between the fullgrade model and a yearly sub is that the app continues to work after the end of the year. (And the number of updates in that year is enormous; last year there were 50, some of them like this one really major.)
