Great - that's how I'm used to state saving working elsewhere. The saved state is independent of any preset, and must be captured by saving a preset or it will be lost.7

Yeah, that is nearly what happens. Wotja, as you know, has a document focus; so, you save to Documents rather than presets. But while you're editing, your Wotja Mix state gets saved within the DAW. When you like what you've done, you can save to document and either keep going or create a new open and start working, or open another existing Mix and start playing around.

Good work! Gone are the days of trying to remember which Mix I was using in my AUM set :)

That is very kind of you to say.

We're running through the final testing of 21.5.1 now, and hopefully will submit for review later today or possibly tomorrow; it should hopefully be "live" in just a few days.

    Best wishes,

    Pete

Wow - 30 years! Didn't realise it was that long ago, but Koan was one of those ground breaking apps that redefined how computer music could be made...😁

It has taken quite a lot of stamina :)

  • @impete my internet access is super slow and therefore it’s not worth it to me to upgrade my iCloud account which gets full very quickly. Would it be possible to arrange a way to share our documents stored on the device with AU rather than be required to use iCloud to do so?

Other developers have created solutions for this issue in their apps such as AudioLayer, DecentSampler, and the beta version of Audulus 4. Some even let you drag and drop documents into the AU instance window from the Files app.

  • Hi @Paulinko

I'd love to be able to say yes, but I have to be honest; as it is just me doing all the development for 4 platforms ... we have to work super efficiently; and where there is a platform-level technology that (iCloud) that solves this problem for most (but not all) customers perfectly; it is hard to see us being able to find the bandwidth to put an alternative solution in place.

I would also say that Wotja mix files are very small - typically around 4 kB, according to Finder.

Have you considered maybe using iCloud, but not putting all your Documents in iCloud?

Personally, that is how I use iCloud. Pretty much all I store in there is Wotja stuff - I don't store my Documents folder in there, for example, as I simply have too much general data on my Mac. But for Wotja - it is incredibly useful; I can share across all Wotja variants, on all my iOS and macOS devices.

    With best wishes,

    Pete

  • thanks again @impete im so excited for this, and am looking forward to what you have in store for 2022!

Don't forget that you can copy and paste anything from synth network patches and individual scales and Rules up through Generators, Cells, and entire Mixes and Albums. Artwork and filenames may not always be preserved when pasting between standalone and AU, but music content is.

I only ever use local storage, despite the simplicity of the iCloud option; it means each version of the app has its own sandbox, but you don't need to be online to access your files and it greatly reduces the risk of overwriting versions of older files in non-backwards-compatible versions. (That last may not be an issue for most, but some features of eg the Text engine work so differently in Wotja 21 from Wotja 20 that I still need the old version for those files to play correctly.)

Thank you for the info. I was able to load a mix I’d created with the standalone and the voices work, but when I load it in the AU it doesn’t although the demo works as expected. I will have to spend a lot more time consistently using the app to get to grips with how things work. Having it AU rather than just standalone and being able to more easily integrate it with my existing apps and hardware is a motivator to dive in deeper.

  • @impete How do you switch from local saving back to I cloud saving without reinstalling the app?

I did notice that the Wotja AUv3 didn't pick up the AUM host tempo unless I made a change to the tempo in AUM, but any changes to tempo in AUM were immediately reflected in the Wotja AUv3.

This is fixed in 21.5.1 - hope that helps

  • Folks, can I please ask that those of you who like what we've done here, would please consider leaving a review on the App Store? Every bit of support helps!

    Very best to all, Pete

  • Nice update. I’ll get when state saving is available

  • Wotja 21.5.1 changes - about to be submitted for app review:

IMPROVED: The AUv3 now saves and restores state.

    • the AUv3 saves the Mix or User album/playlist file name and latest data; when you restore the DAW project data, the mix / album / playlist (if any) is auto re-opened; but applying / using whatever data you last edited up to even if you hadn’t saved your document.
    • if your original document is no longer available, the data is copied to clipboard (so you can import it) and an alert is shown telling you what to do.

FIXED AUv3 (AUM, Logic etc.) properly set Tempo on opening mix to match DAW

FIXED: macOS AUv3 window resizing now works nicely in Logic Pro

IMPROVED: Settings -> Templates - added preview of the templates in this screen

IMPROVED: Table scrollbar colour changes dynamically when colour scheme changes; no need to restart

IMPROVED: TTM seed template changes, and Wotja Play Me mix changes

Same. Lots of tutorials but no short marketing video that explains why i need it. At least that i could find.

Better than that, there's a free version you can get hands-on with:
    https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/wotja-generative-music-system/id1344821101

  • Downloaded the free app and was instantly lost. Seems right up my alley but need to understand the payoff and i don’t based on 30 minutes of looking at videos and playing in the app.

  • @cuscolima @lukesleepwalker thanks for the feedback!

We're hoping to create some up-to-date videos at some point; but there are only two of us, and they're very time-consuming to create...

In the meantime, our hope is that those who are interested, will try out the free version and hopefully be inspired by it; in conjunction with the tutorials.

Anyhow - we're going as fast as we can

    Best wishes,

    Please take a look here:

    https://intermorphic.com/wotja/21/learn/videos/

We've just added links to two brand-new videos by the incredibly clever - and clear-speaking  - @UMCorps

There is a new ISE one coming soon too - and you can follow the links from there to our own video channel on YouTube.

You'll see, I hope, that we're working as hard as we can to improve the "Learning" area of the site.

We're also soon going to add more examples of the music Wotja creates.

As always, please feel free to let us know if there are any areas you think need a bit more focus from us.

    Best wishes,

    Pete

1-minute quickstart GIFtorial (using desktop version because Gifox, but it's essentially the same in iOS & AU):

    1. Start from a Flow. These are collections of randomisation templates that will be randomly selected between to auto-create pieces in an infinite generative radio. (You can also build a piece up from scratch, but this is the quick-entry route.)

    2. Save the current flow to a Mix (a single editable piece), which will allow you to examine and edit how it’s built.

    3. Open the resulting Mix. Flow-generated Mixes have three tracks of a single Cell each. Click on each Cell to see its internal construction.

    4. Each Cell consists of one or more Generators (algorithmic note-composition modules) on the left, each speaking to a modular hybrid synth network patch on the right via a MIDI channel; the audio output then passes through an effects chain. Click on the synth network or effects chain to see inside either, and on each component in the network to see and edit its parameters.

    5. Click on a Generator to select it, and scroll the parameter pane for all the various things you can set and tweak. (This is where it gets deep and you need to burrow into Intermorphic's copious documentation, but the heaviest lifting is done by the Rules section.)

  • @lukesleepwalker plus, being able to interact with our users on forums like this, and at KVR, helps

It is sometimes kind of surreal when I see / hear what our users have made with Wotja. Inspiring, too!

And I do sometimes wonder at the sheer complexity of Wotja ... it does a lot and I appreciate that can be quite overwhelming. It is a constant battle to make Wotja as accessible as possible!

You might also find that you can copy files out to your desktop using Finder / Explorer, if you're not using iCloud on your device.
