A Game of Telephone
It's been mentioned a few times on different threads about starting a competition or compilation. It's also been talked about using all the resources available to create YouTube videos, Soundcloud songs and etc to put out tutorials and videos to promote Audiobus, the apps associated with it, and all the awesome things we create with it.
So I had an idea, instead of a competition, we play a game of telephone. By that I mean one person starts a song and does a 30-45 second segment, uploads it to a public Dropbox folder, and PM's the next person in line the download link, the next person creates a transition segment and then their own 30-45 second segment, PM next person, they create transition & 30-45 second segment. This should be done by the most competent and active forum members. I say a transition segment because there are sure to be different genres with different people; listen to it beforehand, then make a transition into your section.
Could create a video afterwards or whatever, anybody have any ideas for the video?
See any issues we could run into?
We would have to pick some constants beforehand; BPM, Certain Apps Used, Users Participating, and etc.
Just a thought, Please feel free to expand on the idea...GO!!!

I like this. I had suggested a collaboration project for AB users a while back. It might be interesting to try this across a few different genres, so everyone can pick among their preferences. I'm not very advanced as a musician, but willing to try. Count me in.
I'm down. My netlabel (www.embermusic.com) is working on a very similar project as we speak. It's quite a bit of fun, and also challenging.
Love it. Only suggestions are to a) put a time limit on each iteration or it will be held up and b) you PM the next two people on the list. If the next person doesn't put out by the time limit, second person gets on with it.
How about which instruments are being used, like a list, so that proper transitions can be written by using the same instrument and sound, otherwise the transitions might get kinda ..... ugly.
Very cool idea, pretty creative way to show off what AB is capable of!
One idea / alternative I'll throw in here is to try splitting by instrument instead of time (i.e. each person chooses either bass, drums, keys, etc) - like an "Audiobus band". That way the 'transitions' can be avoided (seems tricky to get them right) and people can leverage their familiarity with specific instruments. Could make an album with each song in a different genre, so everyone gets to scratch their itch.
I floated a similar idea before and I think a few of the other usual suspects already on this thread chimed in there too. I'm down. It sounds like a great idea. We need a leader to step up and take the reigns of this and run with it. I'll do it if we don't have anyone else who wants to. There are probably several of you out there that would do a better job of this, but I offer just to keep things moving. Someone else jump in and run with it, please. Otherwise I'll create a public dropbox account tonight and start this process with an update to this thread. When I say "leader"I just mean a common thread and not someone driving the direction. I think the directionless part of it is the thing that's exciting to me right now.

Well how do you start something like this? Just get going with a drum pattern and submit it? So that first person would be in charge of drums? I'm not sure I have time to do a project like this, but I would love to hear the process and maybe join on the next venture.
Idk lol that's why I kinda brought it up, to essentially iron out all the details about it. Rhism brings a good point about instrument sections. I think that def is part of the excitement, the unknown factor of it.
If we do instrument parts then someone will have to lay down an initial beat or if we do sections wed just have to make sure we used the same apps/instruments.
Instrument/App Ideas:
Not in front of my iPad right now so may have missed a few popular ones. Also I saw along with the audio file we upload a text document that says what apps/instruments were used in each section and user. Each user will update it with there part. It really wouldn't be too difficult to do or time consuming.
I like the transitions part. Seems like half the fun to make and hear.
Would be cool if there was a way to do this so that as many people as wanted to could start songs off and then someone could 'check it out' so to speak, add there part and check it back in. That way lots of music could happen and people could pick up which ever one they wanted at any stage. Would be seriously hard to manage without a web app or something that organized it.
I think that if we got this going, and put out a few tunes, we could get a YouTube channel started. That could get a lot of attention for the devs as well as prospective devs and users. It seems like laying down a drum track then a bass track would be the first steps.
The AB all-stars Present: (insert funny bus-related title here)
We don't necessarily have to lock down the beat first, so long as whoever starts off the project makes sure to inform the next person of the BPM and Time Sig... I mean, we are using computers here so locking in shouldn't be a problem. BPM should be a whole number as some apps do not allow for decimals. And I mean, it's probably gonna be 4/4 so...
I do like both ideas... So why not start both? I even have something that I'd be willing to throw out there right now that was made with strictly Samplr and Animoog --> Loopy.
I'll post when I get to my machine.
Yea we could do one track where each person does an instrument and a track where each person does a section & transition. Could provide for some cool results.
@Sebastian - any ideas, thoughts, concerns?
Also, don't post the Drop box credentials here, PM the next person with them that way we ddon't have ppl sabotage, mess up, delete, and etc
I'm on it.
So, we'll figure this out as we go, I guess. I have created a google group for this. I'm thinking that might be the best way for us to communicate, but I'm open to suggestions. Maybe the best way forward is for you guys to click on my name here and leave me your email address so I can add you to the group. From there I will share the details of the dropbox account and we can setup a rotation. If it grows large enough we can seperate it out for different generes and different styles of collaboration as mentioned (ie transistions v layers of a band, etc). If someone has other ideas, just let me know.
Interested to hear what @uglykidmoe has. This would also keep us from staying too long in the Noodlers Club. I'm curious if we could set up an AB users account in Dropbox or Soundcloud to facilitate the sharing. With that, no one has to use their personal account, although someone will still need to be the admin.
I have it now. I've created a dropbox account for us to use as well as a google group for us to communicate through. I still have to know who to share it with though. I could always post the address of the google group I created here as well and just let you guys submit to it yourselves without having to give it to me here. I'm flexible. You guys tell me what everyone's comfortable with.
Would it be best to pm you with sharing details? I'm good with any option, as long as you don't need my SSN or credit card info ;-)
This sounds really fun, I'd love to participate on a track or two.
I posted about this a little while ago too, but my friend puts on a randomized music experiment annually. 64 people randomly assigned to 16 bands, mostly garage rock and hardcore. Two months to meet, write, and perform 15 minutes including one and only one cover song. This year my band did hip-hop with myself composing all of the music, while the others did lyrics. That project was the whole reason I found Audiobus, check it out here:

Most fun I've had in a long time, this game of telephone sounds like it could be that same type of fulfillment.
Sure, you can just click on my name here and post a message to me and I'll send you an invitation.
Thanks for setting all that up @boone51 appreciate it!
Ok. I just sent you my email address. I would like to give this a try.
Shawn
Also.... How do you guys post this @symbol with a name behind it? Do they get an email notice or something?
I love you guys. Just saying...
What Mike said.
Great idea! I'd love to be a part of it guys!
Might be an idea to also upload MIDI versions of main melodies, bass lines, chords, etc., so that those who wish to can more easily work those parts into the arrangement of their own section.
I'm well up for this!
That's a great suggestion by PaulB. Midi files where possible would be valuable info.
