  • Love this idea. Would be fun to keep the stems after and have a few versions of each song aswel so we can hear different people's mastering/arrangements and even remixes.

Awesome. We've started, at least. The group has two members so far not including myself. We have our first project folder out on dropbox. If you want to contribute just click on my name and send me a message with your email address. I promise it won't go anywhere except into the group membership and into your dropbox invitation. I'm really looking forward to hearing the new music that comes out of this. Have a great day, everyone!

I love PaulB's suggestion too, btw. Great idea.

MIDI suggestion is pretty cool. Makes me wish guitarism had MIDI already :)

For the 'band style' collaboration I might also suggest a (deep breath) cover song :) Not sure if that's an interesting or revolting idea to the folks on here but I just thought someone should throw it out there. A really good cover of a well-known pop/rock song using only virtual instruments would convince a lot of people that iOS music has come a long way.

Of course, feel free to completely disregard any of my suggestions. Though I'm itching at the idea of jumping into this, I should probably let it be a purely user-driven thing so I don't taint it with the scent of "developer self-promotion". That said I'd be totally up for doing a developers-only collaboration - me on rhythm guitar, @Blue_Mangoo on bass, @Sonosaurus on lead guitar, find people for drums and keys, etc :) That would have more of a "developers banding together" vibe which would be pretty cool. Then again, you guys are waiting for a bunch of features from all of us...

  • @Rhism Lol you're right. No time for the toymakers to play with the toys. The children are waiting.

  • If you're playing with audiobus and having a good time I think you should be a part of this, Rhism. I do like the idea of a cover song too. My tastes are all over the place, so I'll let someone else suggest what the title should be. I'll start a new thread in the group about it now if you want. I've also messaged both of you guys (mgmg4871 and Rhism) with the group details so you can join.

  • Agreed that this shouldn't preclude the devs. How about a Beatles cover, since most everyone would be familiar with much of their work, and virtualizing (??) some of their work might be fun.

  • I wouldn't mind @Rhism being in on it, who cares! I do think you bring a good point about a cover song, your right in saying that it would prove to a lot of ppl that iOS music production can be for real and sound professional.

  • Cover song should be easily recognizable for most ages, easily reproduced with apps/instruments currently available to the bus but difficult enough for ppl to go "Wow!"

  • @Rhism - I'm down for that.

  • @Rhism I love the idea of a dev-only collab.

On a point similar to uploading midi files (<--- also a great idea), maybe we should put together a quick chordbot sequence to use as a guide. We could even take the same chord progression, but make different tracks out of it.

I think this would be interesting to see how the same chord progression can be expressed in many different ways. We could also group ourselves together based upon our preferred genres (one track of down-tempo electronic, one of glitchy-industrial breaks, one of blues rock, etc.) but also have a musical thread that ties them all together.

    Thoughts?

  • A Day in the Life, Dear Prudence, Come Together (Possibly too obvious), Ob-La-Di Ob-La-Da, Twist and Shout....the list is long. Beatles could work. I wouldn't be opposed to something a little heavier either ;-)

  • Come Together - like Audiobus makes all these other apps "Come Together"

  • All very vocal. Who's up for singing?

  • Why don't we try an instrumental of Come Together first, and if anyone feels up to adding vocals later, they could do so. I'm wondering if a voting system is what's needed to decide which parts to keep. I believe someone suggested that earlier in the thread. I don't have a better alternative.

  • Good point...

Now taking applicants for "Vocalist" for the Audiobus Army / Audiobus All-Stars / TBD

  • Yea maybe @Sebastian & @Michael have to final way on each piece, since it does carry their brand behind it, but at the same time undoubtedly the are super busy.

What is a song that everyone can agree is influential, popular, and would make for an interesting song to perform on iOS?

I vote for something from Dark Side of the Moon, as this is the 40th anniversary of the album this month. Perhaps an iOS version of the whole album? It would be a long haul, but it could be done.

If just one song, I would suggest Brain Damage --> Eclipse (all that you touch...)

    I would sing, no problem.

Talking of brands, are there any "use of copyrighted song to promote a commercial product" type issues to consider? I believe Apple (the Beatles one) are quite litigious.

  • Good point @PaulB. Anyone a lawyer on this thread?

    • Pokes head above parapet *

    I can sing.

I love the idea of the Chordbot progressions, @uglykidmoe.

  • I'm no IP lawyer, but I believe if it wasn't actually used to promote the sale of Audibus in any official capacity it would be just as protected as a band covering any other song. I could be completely wrong about that, and I agree that Apple Music loves their lawyers. Dark Side is actually more appealing to my tastes, but they're just as litigious really, so we're not skirting any issues by choosing them. I also think Talking Heads makes a great band to cover, but I'll defer to the group for the final decision. Perhaps our first poll in the making here.

I also love the Chordbot idea, @uglykidmoe

I'm working on getting polls into the group we have out there now. Haven't quite cracked it yet, but it seems doable.

I'd love this. Git tree style.

One of the reasons I think DSOTM is a safer choice than the Beatles is that there have been a number of other bands to cover the album in it's entirety already (8bit, Dub Side of the Moon, etc.)

Also, covering a song (for instance, at an open mic) can definitely be grounds for lawsuit. Technically, anytime you perform a copyrighted song without consent of the owner of the work, you're breaking the law. Jimmy Buffett is one of the most notorious for charging very high costs to play his songs live (officially and legally).

It seems that more and more people are realizing the benefits of letting people cover their songs, so it is becoming less and less of an issue, but legally it's still possible to get sued for it.

  • edited March 2013

Sounds like another excellent reason to never (ever ever ever) cover Jimmy Buffett. ;-)

  • @boone51 lol. as if being a Jimmy Buffett cover wasn't enough.

  • Haha Unless we can find someone that is into iOS music and the future of it that would let us cover one of their songs. I'm not sure what kind of connections ppl in here have in that regards but just a thought

  • edited March 2013

Amazing. I've managed to get through 52 years of life without ever hearing one of this guy's songs. He seems to have a high opinion of himself though.

  • "lol. as if being a Jimmy Buffett cover wasn't enough." FTW

  • I'm definitely good with DSOTM, as long as we can't get sued!

"It appears that songs administered by Warner it seems are the most dangerous to use. Once Warner bitches to Youtube about a video, youtube says “Uncle” by flagging, maybe deleting your account. UMG seems to do ad overlays on videos of cover songs which is a much nicer, less hurtful thing to do."
