@JMSexton "Unless we can find someone that is into iOS music and the future of it that would let us cover one of their songs. I'm not sure what kind of connections ppl in here have in that regards but just a thought" <-- Perhaps a long shot, but an excellent idea
Maybe Derek Buddemeyer? He visits this forum often.
I bet radiohead would be up for it. Let me call thom. brb.
@syrupcore If he says no can you also call Trent Reznor and The Edge? I gotta believe The Edge would be into this. Or maybe his bud Brian Eno. And of course can't not think of Jordan Rudess
@mgmg4871 Yep Derek just posted this cool little piece using guitarism and iFretless He is definitely at the front of the pack wrt iOS adoption amongst "normal" musicians
I'm a lawyer from Greece. I 'd say that it's imperative to get a permission. I don't know how the law works in USA or UK, but here in Greece , you have to get a permission.
I think though that we should make an original song, why a cover? ok, i understand that it ' ll be instantly recognised etc etc , but my opinion is that with an original song we can be more creative. I am ready to contribute in the whole project with my sloppy guitar playing
here 's my soundcloud in case you want to check my music.

Disagree
@ryan with???
Just generally. On principle. Lol
@uglykidmoe Pretty much everything everyone said in this thread. After reading it all that's all I can think to say. I disagree. I disagree that this is a good idea. I disagree that any famous musician would want to do this (maybe DJ's but i dont consider them musicians). I disagree that a cover tune is a good idea. I disagree that any of you guys can make this work. etc.... :-))
@PaulB HAHAH! Nailed it!
@ryan so contrarian. I've never seen this side of you. What happened to the LoveBus?
I actually currently live with a Classical Guitar player who just auditioned for Peabody, and a DJ who plays moombahton and other world dance music. They hated each other at first.
7 months and a lot of arguments later, now they jam together. I love my life.
If you think a DJ isn't a musician (just because they DJ) then you simply don't understand the amount of work and thought that goes into a (good) dj's set. Nor how much musicality is required to do it well.
A bad DJ is just as much NOT a musician as a bad guitar player. Learning some nirvana songs and reorganizing chord progressions from Pink Floyd might as well be pushing play.
WRT the cover song, I actually think covering a recent NIN track is going to be the safest, most recognizable cover possible.
Also, I'm still all for an original work. I didn't think that option had been thrown out yet.
Thom hasn't texted me back yet. Elitist jerk. Going to try bjork and the gorillaz next.
After that, see if Robbie Williams wants to revive his career. Time to scrape the bottom of the barrel
@uglykidmoe LOL yeah I wasn't going to say anything at all but it was bothering me that everyone seemed so excited over this idea. I can see it going the way of the old joke "How many guitarists does it take to screw in a light bulb? 100, 1 to do it and 99 to say how they could have done it better" LOL And i don't get why a cover tune would even be considered with an idea like this, if the song is already complete then what's the point in 20 people remaking it?
And yes, So true. It is that i don't understand what DJ's do.. I don't get it. Most of the people I know who are DJ's have no musical skill at all and just remix other peoples work like morons. I tried to ask Jon Moore what he did but he wouldn't tell me. I was amazed that he was a DJ and knew so much about apps and music. SO yeah, I don't consider them musicians out of ignorance for sure. Until I learn what they do... I calls em like I sees em. :-)
I find this funny coming from the guy who did the cover of Ween's "Buenos Tardes Amigo" to show off Guitarism. Why not just use an original work? Ween did a fine job of recording that song on 'Chocolate and Cheese'.
Also, the world's greatest musicians typically are playing interpretations of centuries old works... Bach(s), Beethoven, Mozart, Chopin, etc... which have been played by all the greatest musicians before them... does that stop them from continuing to perform these pieces?
I think the advantage would be to catch people's attention with a song they know, but is arranged and organized in a new way, and sonically very different (a new presentation, a new experience).
It would also give everyone here a chance to know each other better, to perhaps dive into programs they weren't familiar with, learn things from each other (about software, midi, music theory, and what-have-you), and, most importantly to HAVE FUN and display the capabilities of AudioBus.
I don't mean to be so serious, but I also don't want to see the wind die out of these sails so quickly.
Nothing worth doing was ever easy, and musical projects rarely stay together for long. These are not good reasons to give up on the idea.
I'm one person playing live. That's the difference. Musicians can cover songs if they want. I have no problem with that. But as Michael Grant described this was meant to be a collaboration amoungst many musicians.. Where one person would do a few minutes and so on and so on.. If the song is already complete then everyone will know exactly where to go with it and the creative edge of everyone will be stipled. An original song makes more sense because the person is not confined to doing what has been done and can really work with their own creativity. The only reason I was thinking cover tunes were brought up at all was because of DJ's and their inability to write original music (opinion). I see your point about how a cover would impress more people that already know the song. What about the people that don't like that group or song? They aren't going to listen and in the case of musicians working on this, it's going to limit people to those who like/know the chosen cover only.
All and all... I would never participate in this because I don't need anyone to finish my songs for me. For people like Michael who are not able to complete a song alone (his words) this idea would seem a lot better. I'm not out to destroy this, infact, it would be pretty awesome if you guys got mad at me and finished this f$#ker just to spite me. lol IN YOUR FACE RYAN!!!
lol Anyhow, i don't really have anything else to say about this except, prove me wrong jerkfaces.
:-)
I've heard vastly different versions of Eleanor Rigby that could easily be considered totally different songs.
@Rhism I'm up for a dev-only collaboration (or any kind, really).... but I would prefer it to be original music. Playing something intentionally accurate is not in my apps' wheelhouse
@uglykidmoe LOL for a second there I thought you said "Robin Williams"
"most importantly to HAVE FUN" <-- This x 100. Don't do it to promote audiobus or its apps. Don't do it to try to make it go viral. Those are all nice secondary benefits but don't do it for any reason other than you find it fun (for whatever reason). This is why I don't want to be part of the "users" collab, because it should be free from those kinds of secondary goals and conflicts of interest.
@Ryan The cover song idea works better with track-based collab, not time-based. But none of these propositions (time-based vs track-based collab, covers vs originals, "tribute" covers vs "reinterpretation" covers) is an either/or thing. A track-based collab for an original song might be something you enjoy, given your thoughts on all this
@sonosaurus Right on - I'm starting a thread in the dev forums for this!
BTW
Given that there will hopefully be a user collab and a dev collab
You know where this is going...
...
BATTLE OF THE BANDS!!!
@Rhism Yeah, that would be much better, more like a band, that makes sense. I'd be in a band with a few of you. Bands are good. Broken telephone game, not so much.. But then there is the question of what team i'd be on.. I'm a dev but I don't have access to the dev forum (not sure why or why not), so i guess im a user.. Graphic designers aren't real devs anyways right? RIGHT??? lol
Can I just join this battle of the bands solo? Me vs. all of you! ;-)
@ryan I gotta say, I don't think you'd make a very good bandmate. That's probably the nice way of saying it...
"...it would impress more people..."
I would use the word "attract", since impressing people with music is something a high school kid does with an acoustic guitar and well-styled hair.
Grown-ups want to affect people with their music. Sometimes, the best way to affect a person is to give them something they already appreciate, but present it in a new, interesting way.
And I would argue that it takes a greater deal of creativity to look at a completed work and say, "How could I make this different, interesting, and hopefully even better?" than it does to play a 1-5-4 or a 1-6-2-5 progression with random noodling over it, even if you think you've never heard something like it before. Unique, maybe. Creative, I doubt it. I guess it depends on how it's done. Herbie Hancock rockin Lydian Chromatic scales over a 1-6-2-5 can be very creative. But he's still using foundations which were built by Bach.
Also, It can actually be more difficult to make people like a version of a song that they already know dearly, so it's definitely not a cop-out. We might even be shooting ourselves in the foot by picking something that lots of people already know and love. But that's all part of the challenge.
"I don't need anyone to finish my songs for me"
Whether you meant that how I'm taking it or not, I'm detecting a hint of superiority wafting off of you which is very disagreeable.
Perhaps it's best that you "would never participate in this."
@Ryan Graphic designers? Pfft... they just push play...
@uglykidmoe I'm allowed to not like the idea and I can freely express that here because ideas don't have feelings. I said nothing about you. You get all personal and try to insult me? If I insulted you it was not intentional but what you are doing is. Please do not speak to me if this is how you deal with people with opinions that differ from your own. I have feelings. :-)
@Rhism It's all "set it and forget it"! No wonder! :-P
Actually, I think it would be fun to collaborate with Ryan. You'd never have to guess what he thought about something. The only reason I'm not likely to do so is that I'm crap at getting stuff done in my free time, which would be very frustrating for all concerned.
@Ryan what you said about opinions goes both ways. I don't believe I insulted you. As for the superiority comment, that's wasn't meant to be hurtful, but informative. You sound a little superior. If you're referring to the high-school kid thing, I was just using an example, not trying to imply that it's you in anyway. Forgive me for that.
What I don't understand is why you would get involved in the conversation if it didn't interest you? What purpose does it serve? Ideas, suggestions, criticisms, all good. But why just announce your disapproval? It's not wrong, but just kinda... useless and maybe a little arrogant.
But, I'm done. I'm sorry I started cutting up your words. Perhaps I was looking for something to unleash upon.
I'll be on the google group trying to push this thing forward.
@Ryan I said I couldn't finish a song by myself? * Checks post history * Um, okaaaaaay, if you say so!
Ok, move along, nothing to see here...
@Michael_R_Grant I could've swarn you started a thread called something like "will I ever finish a song" I can't find it now but that is what i was getting at. Sorry man. :-(
oh, and I play jazz piano, but also DJ, so yeah... I was a little insulted. DJing can be equally as difficult as playing Scott Joplin
