ZOA — Living MIDI Sequencer by Ryan Robinson - Released
https://apps.apple.com/app/id1581881354
Description:
ZOA is a creative MIDI sequencer that is both immediate and immense.
ZOA uses a custom, musical implementation of John Conway’s Game of Life to generate melody, harmony, and rhythm. Up to four playheads move through an evolving landscape of living cells, playing notes as they go. Each playhead can move in a unique way, with its own pace and rhythmic pattern.
Features:
- Interact with the Game of Life by touching the grid to toggle cell states
- Define your musical palette by configuring the grid settings
- Create a complex dance between four independent playheads
- Free your hands to explore your synthesizers as ZOA plays them for you
- Explore a focused, yet deep set of parameters
- Grid Settings
- Root note
- Octave shift
- Scale (see below for available scales)
- Octave range
- Game of Life Settings
- Grid size (8x8 and 16x16)
- Auto or manual generation advance
- Rate of new generations (in beat time from 16 bars to 32nd T)
- Auto or manual grid respawn
- Playhead Settings
- Four playheads with independent settings
- Enable/disable
- Rate of play (in beat time from 16 bars to 32nd T)
- Length of note (10% to 100%)
- Variety of rules for moving through grid (see below for list)
- Pitch offset
- Unique pattern control for creating rhythms and polymeters
- MIDI velocity and channel
- Flexible Connectivity
- Use in a compatible audio unit host like AUM, or in standalone mode
- Control multiple instruments at once with five MIDI outputs
- One for all playheads together, and one for each playhead by itself
- Set the key and octave shift on the fly with MIDI input
- Sync tempo to other devices using Ableton Link or MIDI clock (standalone)
- Connect to Bluetooth MIDI devices
- Modulate ZOA's parameters in a compatible AUv3 host (audio unit)
- Includes macOS app!
- Grid Settings
IMPORTANT:
ZOA can be used as a standalone app or as an AUv3 plugin. There are some important differences between the two. The standalone app features a simple, toggleable "Sidekick Synth" so you can quickly experiment with ZOA. Of course, you can also send MIDI from the standalone app. Meanwhile, the ZOA AUv3 plugin does NOT generate sound. Instead, you use it to send MIDI (note messages) to other apps, plugins, or hardware instruments that do the actual sound generation. AUv3 plugins must be used inside a compatible host.
Available Scales
- Major Pentatonic, Minor Pentatonic, Major, Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian, Mixolydian, Minor, Locrian, Blues, Whole Tone, Harmonic Minor, Melodic Minor, Chromatic
Available Playhead Rules
- Up, Down, UpDown, DownUp, First, Last, Random, Walk, Rise, Fall

Talking?! In a YT video about a new app? Pfft! Old hat. Just let it run, load the presets et voila! There may be some left scratching their heads, thinking "couldn't I have done that?" But those are definitely clothes, not just an ass crack and some pubes.
Xynthesizr?
From the AutoPad developer. Nice to see in one of the videos he says AP's success has enabled him to go fulltime iOS with this upcoming musical Game of life app.
Yeah, this looks awesome. Xynthesizer as AU = Instabuy.
Interesting...
Sounds decidedly musical. Nice to hear an app demo producing something that deviates from the "closing time at the steel factory" kind of noise that is considered so cool these days. Good luck to the dev! 👍
WHEN???
Too much of a tease
Release please
Love Conways Game of life
They said AutoPad would be getting another update soon too.
Agreed. Love that app.
Hey, thanks for the share. Gonna try to get the beta out early next week! If people want to get notified about the beta, give me a follow on Twitter (@audio_symmetric) or sub on YouTube, I'll be posting about it there when it happens.
Oh oh, it's another beta. Hang onto your handbags, ladies.
I am really loving this, if you send a couple or all of the same channels to one source, but change things up, like the velocity, transposition, speed, play type, and the pattern length/pattern sequence (white and black circles below pattern can create a sequence up to 16 steps) you can get this to put out some really interesting stuff. I love the wide range of pace. This thing is so dope. Unique, evolving, melodic, sounds, when dialed in you can find all kinds of sweet grooves. I really love it for that type of stuff. It’s seriously like Fugue Machine, meets Conways Game of Life, meets Snake Bud, meets Rozeta Particles/Collider, meets Audio Symmetric.
I do have a few suggestions @rygrob
the ability to change the octave of each of the 4 midi signals. You can transpose each of the 4 midi ports up and down 12 semitones, but when you change the octave it affects the whole grid. It would be cool if it was more like fugue where you could change the grid octave, but also each of the 4 midi port octaves. Then you have the ability to alter the octave and the semitone on each.
Velocity Randomization, setting a range as opposed to a single value would be great.
Gate or Length Randomization, like velocity, setting a desired range for the gate would be awesome
I know I’m stretching here but… Some way to possibly add probability, possibly with a 3rd dot, like In Scatterbrain’s sequencer. Each step in the pattern could be on, off, or a probability button (sometimes it triggers note, sometimes it doesn’t, and user sets the probability amount that those steps will play or not in the pattern) just a thought.
Really love this Audio Symmetric! @rygrob you’ve created a awesome new midi sequencer. Congratulations on creating such an amazing midi app! I’m really digging it.
Didn’t realize beta link was in a different thread so here ya go..

I like it! Great and clear UI, fun results. Works like a charm inside Drambo.
Coming out tonight - $3.99 for 48 hours then regular price after that at $7.99 grab it while it’s hot.
I played around with the beta and this thing is great. Definitely buying right away. I haven’t dug into AutoPad yet…
So am I. I love different ways to experiment with midi.
This. The palette of MIDI apps for iOS has been such a remarkable catalyst for me this year…
Is it on the app store? Can't find it here.
It says “at midnight PST”
(If my simple math is correct, that means it’ll show up on the App Store after 3am for me, being here on the east coast U.S.)
Thanks, I wanted to but didn’t look up what time zone that was… I just knew it would be there soon.

Love this app - go buy it! 😍
Bought - very much up my autogen alley, it’s like the Xynthesizr game of life setting writ large, crossed with Fugue Machine. Very easy to understand interface, lots to tweak and dive into, playing with it now. Could be up there with Snakebud and Cykle as my fave sequencer, I think. Thank you, @rygrob !
I bought this today, super fun sequencer. And having a Mac separated app for this price is the icy on the cake.
👍
Did the beta…instabuy.
Do you find it sometimes reduces to a small set of notes and repeats endlessly?
@NimboStratus : that’s a setting you can select, I think? If you toggle off auto regenerate it loops round the current selection.
