  • @alecsbuga : it would be great to be able to drag single pads from a crate to a target.

I'm using Sample Crate as my main sample repo….. Drambo also uses Sample Crate as reference folders for samples, wavetables for its library, so no duping samples.

Can you please explain this?. As far as I know in Drambo you have to import the folders, because of the sandbox thing, so there’s always duplicates. What do you mean by reference the Sample Crate folder?. Thanks!

I tested this on my new iPad when I got it last year. Where I placed all my samples in Sample Crate and used the import folder feature in Drambo. Drambo creates a reference to the folder in Sample Crate and shows the files in its browser. Basically it's a symlink like on desktop, so files aren't duplicated. I validated this by checking my storage after importing into Drambo, and free space was the same.

If you import off an SD card or cloud storage, then files are imported / copied into Drambo.

    Ok yeah, that’s what I thought 👍
I’ve also checked the storage size for these operations. Even though they’re indeed like symlinks i believe it’s not as straightforward and still annoying. Say you reorder, rename, move or delete the original files… in that case they’d be duplicated. Also when doing the system iCloud backups I believe they do take up double the space, they’re treated like new versions. Not a big fan of the sandbox thingy.

Yeah it does get confusing. I've done this on my main iPad only, to avoid the iCloud dupes and don't sync to desktop.

Hey guys, I've been recently in need of a good native iOS sample manager.
    So I've built one :)

So the idea is like this: you have a file browser very similar to the Files app, which I love.
You can do all the good shit Files app allows you to do: Tagging, sharing, moving, copying, etc. Tags are synced via iCloud across devices (including with Files app) if you keep your samples in iCloud (very vast and reliable) or on your device.

You can tap a file and play it instantly, or add it to The Crate.

The Crate Player allows you to have a bank of pads to try out your samples together. If you like them you can tag them, export them, etc.

One cool thing you can do is SAMPLE CHAINS :D. You can grab all your favorite kicks and create a sample chain for your OP-1 or OP-Z or M8 Tracker, or whatever :)

I'm gonna add Sample Slice & Export after launch also.

I'll post here a link to TestFlight for those interested.

Sorry for that. But I used some new APIs from apple and they’re not iOS 13 compatible. It would mean rewriting parts of the app and I don’t have the bandwidth for that unfortunately.

@alecsbuga , I like very much sample crate! My initial ideas:

    • is there an chance to get switch in options „auto play on tap”? So sample will auto playback after tapping, without need to second time tap to hear sound.
    • There is an latency on internal speaker when I tried play on crate, is any possibility to reducie bufor to say 64 samples? (I know, it is not an instrument, but would be nice to check samples in crate like in the sampler, to get more feeling how samples will play after export to say Drambo or other)

Even without this Im planning to give 5 stars and recomendation for others like „musi have for organizing huge sample library”. Thank you for the app!

  • edited December 2022

Ok, I found „auto play” is alerady enabled when in list view, in co;lumn only is needed two times tap, so there is no need to change, the app is 5 stars. 👌🔥

  • Hey, sorry for the late reply, busy at work and haven't checked the forum :disappointed:
Thanks and glad you sorted it out. I was like "Whaat?" the main thing of the app is autoplay :)

As for latency, I know it frustrates me too. The crate is there to manage sample kits and see how they fit together, but I do wish to fingerdrum on it too :)

but that part of the code is not the full audio engine of Samplist. Each pad has a small audio player attached to it, so whenever you tap it it loads the wav once and plays it. Hence the latency.

  • also, I plan to use my Christmas vacation and downtime at work to fix some bugs & implement some pending features requested by users. So stay tuned.

  • good! as far as I seen, during selection of samples ane after deleting all selected samples browser return to position sometimes not it the same place when I was during hitting delete. i know, deleting meqn less files in list so it is resorted somehow and visible differently, but sometimes it stays at correct place and sometimes not. also I found sometimes when list of samples in folder is huge like 5000 or more, the selection is disapieared, and i must start again to select what I want… so as workaround I delete more often to minimalise risk of lost my selection, but maybe it is some how able to fix… or maybe it is just too long list of files in folder. anyway, I like your app very much , and my bad I biught it so late, better late than never

I’ve also checked the storage size for these operations. Even though they’re indeed like symlinks i believe it’s not as straightforward and still annoying. Say you reorder, rename, move or delete the original files… in that case they’d be duplicated.

    That's incorrect.
Uhh .... maybe if you rename, though I doubt it. I've never actually tested that.

Also when doing the system iCloud backups I believe they do take up double the space, they’re treated like new versions. Not a big fan of the sandbox thingy.

    Probably. I've never verified that.

Renaming doesn’t change the storage. The file system does not use names to track files. It uses file ids which users and apps can’t change.

I don’t believe this is the case BUT I can’t say 100% for sure.

I can’t remember the exact figures but I believe the backup size indicated that they were duplicated.
Even if they’re not, the fact is that the iPad storage numbers and statistics don’t treat these duplications as symlinks. So you have to trust these “accurate guesses” based on file system inner working knowledge rather than the actual numbers displayed on your device.

  • I'm looking for a solution that would make it easy (or at least easier) to work with the Samples from Mars collection I purchased years ago. I'd love to be able to efficiently find and load samples into Sitala or Koala for sequencing in AUM. Is this app a potential answer?

For years I avoided working with samples because the inventory management minigame drives me bonkers. Trying to overcome that bias...

sample crate is.... app to hear samples inside folders, delete, rename, view in list or columns, move etc
for superbig library I prefer to use desktop computer, and later put choosen files on iPad

Sample crate have their place in all this process (desktop isnt mobile on iPhone, sample crate yes it is)

  • Thanks for the feedback. I've been working with the library on the desktop so far, and it sounds like the step I really need to take first is to get a proper sample library tool on there. Makes sense.

  • delete key is most used tool so far ;)

@alecsbuga probably you know… when sample is deleted it disapear, but after a second it shows again in a list view, and in next half second it is again gone…. so list chanes twice , and not as would be more fast only one… its making all deleting process slower, as user must wait until „ghost” will disapear too, to be able precisely select next sample on the list (to listen and eventually delete again). I hope my description is clear. Is this user error or normal behaviour of the app?

No I didn't know about it. I use whatever Files app provides. Does that behave the same?

I noticed I have some tagged files in kits in Files / SampleCrate, and somehow they're not always visible.

+1 and apply on the fly small chain of auv3? ;) would be nice to listen thru some irs or other medusa/compressors with eq saturation….

Not that i have found, im just used to lower the volume by hand after some startling experiences xD

  • It's coming. If I don't finish my whole checklist I'll at least release some quick fixes and volume control.

  • MIDI files preview is working :D

  • Actually, I've never used midi libraries until now. But it's useful to browse midi chords like this damn! I've been living under a rock.

I use them for the MPC 1000. I had no idea it opens up MIDI files :open_mouth:

  • @alecsbuga could you possibly add a setting to turn off the orange wav icon as previously discussed?

I love sample crate, and don’t even mind the design of the icon itself - I just find it really jarring against all the other icons in file manager. I’m a designer and very visual person so these things bother me an irrational amount.

I hated blue icons in SC :)

I’ll make an option to remove it.
    It’s also on the shortlist

It’s more about it not appearing everywhere else in file manager etc. Within the SC interface it definitely makes sense. Not sure if it’s all or nothing though
