This might be the thread to ask this question:

Does anyone know of any decent/good free Minimoog emulation AU plugins for macOS? I found one for Windows, but not macOS.

I don’t know of any that are always free, but minimonsta often shows up really inexpensively. I got it free at some point in the past two years, but I don’t remember where.

Arturia had the minimoog classic for free several years ago for one day but I don’t think I’ve seen it since.

The cherry audio mg-1 is free, definitely not a mini moog but does sound great

If you have logic, the retro synth (I instrumentalists that’s what it’s called) has some mini styled patches.

Thanks. Looks like “minimonsta” is currently $129.00. Not what I can afford right now.

With any luck, Moog might also make their Model D iOS/macOS, like their Model 15 and Animoog Z.

  • Minimonsta 29.99$ on Audio Plugin Deals.

They do have generous offers quite frequently but usually rolling between their various products.

If you have the official Moog Model D you can use it on iPhone, iPad and Mac — at no extra cost.

Minimonsta was free from novation but not now. also it doesn’t work on later OSes (so also doesn’t work on M1 Macs).

VK1 is free and similar to Moog voyager but vst only I think (not (AU) but works in most DAWs except for Logic. But Logic has retro synth which can make Moogy noises.

Model D does not work on desktop. Only Animoog Z, Model 15 and their Claravox.

Yeah I forgot Model D isn’t on Mac yet. I have them all on iOS. Don’t really use them that much on the Mac yet. But I have a glut of synths.

Minimonsta is a strange one. It stopped working on Big Sur but works again on Monterey (but still not Big Sur!) without any updates from GForce. I didn’t know that before.

So apart from me getting it all wrong it was an informative post. 🤣

Everyone who uses GarageBand on desktop (macOS) there has been a software update to 10.4.6. Seems to have fixed some longstanding issues for me.

And after extensive testing, I’m seeing more iOS apps (including synths) are now working flawlessly as AU’s in GarageBand.

I now have these iOS apps working in the macOS (desktop) version of GarageBand:

    Synths:
    -AddStation
    -Aparillo
    -Sunrizer
    -All iFretless instruments
    -Quanta
    -Continua

    Effects:
    -Neon Silicon's PhaseDelayArray
    -Numerical's FD1-Filter Delay
    -Phonolyth's Velvet Machine

Strangely enoug, yaleD (the delay effect) used to work and now it doesn't... and considering the last time it was updated was two years ago, I think the developer has given up on it.

It's no secret that I'm a huge fan of GForce and Minimonsta is a great synth. But it is a soft synth of its era (the mid naughties) and as a Model D emulations go, it's pretty far down the list in comparison to plugins like U-He Diva and post Diva emulations.

At $30 Minimonsta is definitely worth getting for the unique aspect of the synth's design - the Melohman Meta patch morphing capabilities. This provides Minimonsta with movement and animation capabilities that are fairly unique in the world of virtual analogs. But if you're looking for the raw power of a Model D, there are better plugin options out there (and not from Arturia either). For my money, it's a toss-up between Diva, NI's Monark and Synapse Audio's The Legend. All three deserve a place in your collection as they each deliver their own nuanced Model D flavour but all are first-rate and won't disappoint.

Have you demoed the softube model 72? I’ve seen it on sale for $50. I bought their Juno after 10 mins demo during last sale. I’ve had to sell 2 hardware 106’s in the past and I don’t regret it anymore. I love TAL but the Softube is better to me. The Softube moog 72 is probably sick, hopefully I can grab next sale. I won’t demo and temp fate right now though :)

I mean it's O.K, got it for free from Novation a while back. Very solid synth, but since I got the V Collection last BF it doesn't see much use. I really prefer the sound of the Mini V, the Minimonsta sounds a little harsh to me. Here is an older very in depth comparison of different Minimoog emulations:

  • Weirdly I’m not a huge Minimoog fan but I do have Softube’s Model 72 and it sounds awesome. I recently got Softube Modular as well and you can use the various ‘parts’ of the 72 as modules. Really good.

Someone on this thread, possibly @jonmoore? recommended I get the Buchla 296e last time it was $50 and I got sucked into modular. Mostly just for as an insane FX module. It’s great, I can see getting deeper with it as a synth in the future.

  • As someone who has no idea about what a Moog should sound like Minimonsta has been my favourite since I bought it on release. The sound is stunning to me and if there is a better emu I don't need it.

  • PA released M1 native versions - dont forget to update

also - for a huge fat analog sound Knifonium KNIFONIUM-2999

Just installed it on my MacBook Pro and it works well. Thanks for the heads up. I’d assumed it wouldn’t as Bug Sur broke it :-)

I also have the arturia mini (and the mode D on iOS) but have no real desire to compare them. I’ll just treat them as different synths. They all have the ability to throw up a preset to serve as inspiration.

The only problem with the Minimonsta is that I find the UI hard to read. The arturia, whilst having a similar vintage sound engine to the Minimonsta has an updated GUI which makes it easier to tweak.

As for how close they are to a real Minimoog? I don’t personally care.

I’m totally spoilt for choice on Mac an iOS when it comes to synths and fx. I need to stop buying stuff and stick with what I have now. I honestly think I’m done for a while.

    Hahaha.

  • EOS2 by Audio Damage sale on PA - use voucher ADG-EOS2-1999

Full Bucket Vocoder FBVC updated - M1 native now

  • TheZhe released another great utility plugin for free
TheUtility - for blending dry wet

  • Izotope is running a promotion where you can get Komplete 13 for rather cheap. That's even cheaper then the regular buy Select and then upgrade at a specific time kind of thing:

Best calculation I have seen so far if you start with "nothing" it 50% off, this might be a different way if you own an Izotope product. I'm a little tempted.

Time to test out the demo. Mmmm.

After testing for about 20 minutes, it really, really reminds me of Yonac's Magellan 2. And it proves to me how much Yonac synths are needed for macOS.

And I really like it. Has some great bass sounds. Will probably buy this one.

Ahh I am with you on Yonac’s synths. Kaspar and Magellan are the business. Is there any hope for a Max port or even flicking the switch for M1 Mac’s?

Interesting Kontakt freebie. Works in free Kontakt player as well.

    https://impactsoundworks.com/product/the-88e/#videos

Edit: played around with it. Glad I downloaded. I recorded a note and Paul Stretched the crap out of it. Cool sound, it’s very rich in harmonics so it works really well.

  • Audio modeling is running rebates ln upgrades on all bundles and individual instruments.
For example, solo woodwinds upgrades are 100 usd instead of 187.

It was me that made the recommendation and I'm glad you brought it up as I highly recommend Model 72 and Model 84 too

The thing that gives both of those 'must buy' status (IMO) is their value as part of the Softube Modular ecosystem. Model 72 is amongst the best Minimoog emulations and Model 84 is scarily close to Juno 106 hardware. However, their real value is how all their component parts are then made available as modules in Softube Modular. That's the added value that no other emulation can match.

If you're not invested in Softube Modular their still worthy of consideration, but Softube Modular compatibility is the true icing on the cake.

Hey Jon- Funny you posted this today because last night I Installed the demo for the 259e. I stayed up all night making the coolest weirdest sounds. Bought the plug before I passed out. 😁 THANK YOU!
