  • That Akai thing, isn't that a hardware DAW, or am i skeptical?

Great question! Yes, but in this case: DAWless refers to no desktop nor laptop tethered devices or music making. Quoting the Sound on Sound article above:

“If you’ve been on the internet in the last 10 years, you’ve probably stumbled across the phrase ‘DAWless jamming’. It’s a mildly clumsy expression for making electronic music without a computer.”

  • Ahh, ok. Good you pointed that :) , otherwise it could end up in long debate with other members about the meaning of DAW, haha.

Lol, yeah Akai and the like are computers only focused on music making, no different than a keyboard workstation or any other digital musical instrument.

Laptops, desktops, phones and tablets typically have “distractions” (text messages, phone calls, emails, push notifications etc.) and take longer to setup.

  • I have a windows tablet running a standalone synth (ongaku) is that dawless? I have the Wi-Fi turned off

Dawless as a term isn't very meaningful and somewhat outdated, when used in context of a computer. What is a computer?

Everything is a computer. MPC / iPad / Phones are ARM based computers. Even synths like Korg Opsix are computers, runs on Raspberry Pi.

But if dawless means being not contrained to a timeline / arrangement based way of making music, then yes dawless all the time: AUM, Bitwig (without clips or timeline), VCV, Drambo, Gig Performer.

For me, DAWless means instruments only (digital included) - no home computers used as music instruments. There is something strangely productive about just playing and not having to click and drag stuff per se. I do understand the literal sense that 75% of musical instruments these days are computers.

Seems like Sound on Sound suggested a setup with only “musical instruments” 😂

Meaning gear made to be musical instruments. Sort of a suggestion of the music world before computer screens were added. Funny enough they included MPCs, Cirklon and Elektrons as devices that sequence everything.

I can’t see the point of arbitrarily excluding a tool from your available options.

I’m also on the Elektronauts forums, and the number of hoops people jump through just to avoid the ease of dragging audio files around on a timeline is nuts. The other side of DAWless is avoiding computers and/or screens. Apart from the screens on most hardware music boxes. Those are ok apparently.

I mean, do stuff however you like, but don’t make a fetish out of it.

Personally, I prefer to use a guitar, or synth, or an OP-1 to come up with ideas, but it all ends up in Ableton because thats the best tool for arrangement, for me. And if I have a solid idea that I just need to execute, I’ll go straight to Ableton.

You never meet a graphic designer who wants to go image-editor-less.

I will admit that connecting hardware devices that I normally connect on a screen is fun. It’s probably because I started with software, so hardware is new for me.
😂 Graphic design was done before computers, but I understand what you mean.

Same is true for film, editors spliced actual film back in the day!

  • Yeah, it's an arbitrary distinction like @mistercharlie said, a tool is a tool. If I'm using a computer to make music, I'm not doing anything at the same time, and all my notifications are off. I prefer no restrictions. It's same way I find it weird when some want to do everything using Eurorack modules. But what works for one person will be different for another.

Thank you! This whole "DAWless" fetish just doesn't make sense. Oh, someone can make music without the need for a digital screen? Good on them for having deep pockets to afford all the hardware they could possibly want. 😂

Personally, I prefer to use a guitar, or synth, or an OP-1 to come up with ideas, but it all ends up in Ableton because thats the best tool for arrangement, for me. And if I have a solid idea that I just need to execute, I’ll go straight to Ableton.

For me, if AUM isn't considered a DAW, then yes, I use a "DAWless" environment when crafting live Ambient.

Then again, AUM has the ability to play back audio through its File Player (and soon will have audio tracks as j_liljedahl said in a previous thread), and AUM has the ability to use AUv3 MIDI sequencers (and soon will have its own automation), so maybe in a sense it is/will be a modular DAW? Regardless, who gives a fuck if it's a DAW or not? It's a tool.

But when I'm creating EDM, you bet your arse I'll be using a timeline of some sort to lay out the tracks. I usually go into Gadget, load up a default piano sound, lay out chords and a melody, and develop the piece from there.

You never meet a graphic designer who wants to go image-editor-less.

    Hahaha! Exactly! 😂

I understand: there are ways to play and record without CPUs such as guitars, drums and vocals straight to multitrack tape or reel to reel - very expensive! We have become so computer-driven that many of us consider dedicated computers for instruments not computers 😆

  • The definition of DAW is worth noting:

A digital audio workstation (DAW) is music production software that allows users to record audio on a personal computer. DAW software works on both the Mac and Windows operating systems. It is used for audio recording, audio editing, MIDI editing, mixing, and mastering, among other functions.

Ah, so it doesn't include iOS in the definition. 😉 I'm 100% DAWless then. 😏😂

    Yes.

    Also: instrumentless.

I have synths, Ableton, keyboards, guitars. Can’t play any of them.

Make all my noises these days on IPad & Modular.

    AUM is my safe place.

  • I have several setups, I have a lap setup using various Daws, Logic, Ableton, ProTools and Reason , I have an IPad with Daws and non Daw workflows and I have a hardware setup using an Mpc Live 2 to sequence my hardware synths, this is my Dawless setup

  • For me the most functional idea of dawless is about not using a timeline / piano roll. In that sense I’m mostly dawless. But who really cares? 😂

  • @Stuntman_mike said:

Sure, that’s your claim. Pretty convenient that you can’t prove it with a recording, since computers hadn’t been invented yet to record it.

MPC software can do most of those things and runs on Windows/Mac too, hehe.

  • This discussion will always rise up.
Hope someone is writing a thesis on this topic while we still debate.

For me dawless jamming is improvisational way of playing and live arranging with electronic instruments.
I guess it could be virtual too.

Each instrument got its own groove and soul so if they sync they can create a whole new dialog and accompaniment.

Groovebox performance or jamming is dawless jamming.

If I use Ableton or Aum as a Groovebox what would you call it?
