@rottencat : Ha! Wow - lucky old cat! Yeah - since I feel that way about even most regular synths, I figure come the glorious day, I’ll be able to handle it. In the sense that I won’t be able to handle it at all, and I’m used to that!

Oh, and I see you mentioned the Dust Collector. Another cool choice that would have been on my list too (along with Herbs & Stones stuff, that weird percussion synth which uses threaded bolts as patch points you use alligator clips on, The Soma Labs Pulsar 23 -

    and the remade synthi,

    And this:

…all the Ciat Lombarde stuff: http://ciat-lonbarde.net/

…basically any exotic bit of gear either Hainbach or Loopop managed to get their hands on over the last couple of years. Anything that puts the experiment into experimental electronic sound creation , I think.

…but then, my list would have been even longer, and impossibly expensive this side of a lottery win. When I keep reminding myself my most practical investment in my noise production would be just to up my iPad game to an M1 Pro version…

I blame it on growing up with the Radiophonic Workshop as my personal definition of cool. :)

@jrjulius : I got my latest eurorack module, Eowave’s Weather Drones, last Saturday, the 6th.

I added it to the rack and made a track with it on the 9th

Did I know what I was doing with it? Hell, no!

    :)

Man... that's some slurpy, glurpy sea monster shit. Nice purchase. IOS apps don't seem to get there like a solid piece of gear.

Here’s a question for those of us here that work towards “finishing songs:” after scratching your GAS itch, how long do you find before you actually start creating again?

I’ve had a very indulgent three months (Red Panda Raster 2, UA Volt 476, Novation Launchpad Pro, TB MBC, AudioModern Playbeat and Chordjam, Looom) and I have spent hours exploring each of my new toys, but I haven’t actually completed anything since before I ordered the Raster because I’m spending all my time watching tutorials, twisting knobs, looking for optimal use cases, etc.

I’m curious because up until just a few years ago, my impulse was always to buy something new and immediately start writing songs with it. But now I feel more pressure to “understand the complexities.” What are your thoughts?

This is a really good watch and solid advice on gas and completing tracks

Hi, I am new here (been around other places a while).

I purchased a lot of things lately, including a new iPad Pro 12.9 that just arrived yesterday with some accessories like a new pencil (giving my Pro 10.5 with Pencil to my daughter). I would say music-making on an iPad is a secondary use for me, but I would like it to be more. My primary uses are as a notebook for work (writing, mathematical calculations, ideas, etc.) and as a multi-media entertainment device.

As far as hardware goes, I have been sitting on the fence about the darned Lyra-8 ever since they became available. I should just stop dancing around it and get one.

I also sort of want to get a desktop filter and harmonic distortion thing like the Analog Heat or the Boum. I have the other two OTO boxes already, but I am leaning towards the Elektron box.

Other than those things, I am sort of set for now.

I follow Jeremy on YouTube. He had a good rant about GAS and posting synth pictures on Reddit. I honestly did not know that is a thing, but I am not surprised. I am not on Reddit. I don't post photos on Modwiggler, which is my main hardware forum/hangout. I don't know what triggered him. Maybe he is getting tired of being an influencer showing off gear and just wants to make recorded and live music.

Honestly, what I would really like now is time, energy, and our kids all out of the house supporting themselves. I will be 57 in a few days. Retirement is a pipe dream.

    What’s your hesitation with Lyra?
If you can afford to buy it without hurting your finances go for it!
There’s nothing like unboxing, plugging in new gear and figuring it out 🤩
Have fun while you can my brother and post some of your experiments here!

This may sound abnormal but I really like the simplistic, playlist style of the MPC song mode. Anyone else?

  • By the way, I love the way True Cuckoo made this song - straight to audio:

That is a good question. Money is not really the issue. A lot of what I hear on YT videos sounds good, but I hear a certain sameness to the sound that pervades many of them. The thing that keeps me going back is the sameness is something really good.

I should probably just pull the trigger. I think the only other thing that has had me fence-sitting so long is the Erica Das Klein Fusion system. It is also a system that can make quite a bit of sweet distortion, but it also can make undistorted sounds quite well.

Almost never. I’ll usually start either with a melody or some lyrics.

I feel you. I usually start with chord progressions, but after watching this Thundercat video awhile back it had me thinking about what truly makes a song memorable and groovy:

Yeah, that one. LOL. I have my Iridium on a VESA mount over my Hydrasynth. I am just out of space. No Peak -> Summit, no Iridium -> Iridium KB, and no Hydrasynth KB -> Hydrasynth Deluxe for me. Sometimes space limits purchases.

This is why smaller things that can go onto a higher, wall-mounted shelf when not in use are so... tantalizing.

    Always

Doesn’t everyone? Of course they do.

    1. Waldorf Blofield - this is probably my next purchase because I always enjoyed the PPG Wave plugin!

Blofeld has been on my GAS list
for 3 years and I finally finally grabbed one last month.
I strongly advise you to get one.
This Synth is a masterpiece. So compact, flexible, rich sound wise
    and affordable.
Forget the negative reviews and follow your enthusiasm.
You will not be disappointed when you own it.

  • 1.deluge (to replace my Mpc one unless Force hack works and convenient)
2.syntakt (if only it had a sampler)
    3.polyend play
    4.analog 4

FYI: I was playing my Launchkey 37 paging through the settings and saw polyphonic aftertouch as an option for the pads! I always liked Novation pads, I’ve got to experiment with this feature.

Side note: I do have a Launchpad Pro MK3 and MicroFreak, which are well documented to have polyphonic aftertouch but it seems like this feature is not talked about for Launchkey pads.

Caveat: I assume this feature is available for the Launchkey Mini, but I do not have one to confirm.

  • @Tamir_Raz_Mataz : what is the Force hack?

It’s a hack to install Force so on an MPC.

    Lookout for IAmforce hakai

  • Aha. Thanks:)

    1. OB-6
    2. Strymon Dig v2
    3. Batumi Quad LFO (or maybe the Malekko one)
    4. Moog Subharmonicon
    5. Getting some of my broken gear that I already own and love to a tech for repair

Best answer. Maybe if I one day get some inspiration back, I'll trade you some for your OB-6. ;)

I remember an interview with Bjork (late 90s maybe) where she said she never ever started with a bass line specifically because it was "cheating". Would be fun to be Bjork for a bit.
